In a new interview, Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama has expressed his interests in creating a Final Fantasy VII remake. Although Yoshinori Kitase, producer of Final Fantasy XIII has already expressed his concerns in bringing the game’s towns to high-definition, and Nomura has said development hasn’t begun on a remake, it looks like Square Enix staffers still want to create it.

“I’m really interested to see this more complete form of Final Fantasy VII portrayed more realistically with the voice and animation and all the suttle expressions there,” Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama said. “I’d be interested to see that and to make that, it would be a great experience. I don’t get tired of people asking that question, so I’ll continue to answer my thoughts as long as people keep asking.”

The interview can be seen here. He answers the Final Fantasy VII question at the very end.

I love this guy :wacky:

I am glad that not everyone on the team thinks negatively about the remake. I am prepared to wait any amount of time for the remake, I just want it. Seems that Toriyama is really interested in seeing a remake of FFVII after seeing what FFXIII came out as. I love this kind of information :ryan:

I'm actually fed up with the fact that people say they want it and the makers say they won't. Why can't they make up their minds and say if it's going ahead or not? I'm not putting a downer on this or anything, but I'm fed up of speculation surrounding a remake. I think they should leave the game as it is. It's too much with a film and several more games revolving around it.

:awesome:

Sounds fantastic, hope it works out! VII certainly has a large enough fan base, they'd make a crapload of money off of it. Wonder if they'd use the same character designs they had in AC or try to make even better ones? :hmmm:

Good thing it's not happening anywhere in the near future. Nomura has already stated that there are no plans, and that he doesn't think it will be released. Yoshinori Kitase has even come out and said that it would take too much time and far too many resources to do.

Bottom line is, get prepared to wait for years on your precious remake. Even if they start development tomorrow, it wouldn't be ready within the next 5-10 years.

Besides, just how much more "complete" can that game get anyway? With all the spin-offs and crap you guys get and eat up...

Seriously, how much more do fanboys need? You have spin-offs, a fraking film, and you still want the remake. Fanboys that obsess over a remake are part of the reason that makes us hate FFVII fanfags. :hmph:

This bullshit is never going to end. It's going to be denied by some staffers while other staffers beat the horse with a stick. Of course, the FFVII fanboys will be teetering on the edge of their seats and jizz in their pants at the mere mention of a remake.

Dudes, just let it go. Move the frak on. You don't see us whining and bitching about a FFIX remake.

Toriyama who? It's like those two people who made Crystal Chronicles commenting on a Final Fantasy VII remake. At the end of the day, if both Kitase and Nomura have admitted it's unlikely, then being the two main figures at Square Enix other than Wada, then it's probably unlikely. I wish they'd stop contradicting each other, it becomes extremely annoying and because of this some FFVII question will be brought up at E3, GDC, TGS etc. :ffs:

Ok this is rather interesting I thought the whole idea was scrapped but now Toriyama wants to make it. I will say that if they make a remake it better be a masterpiece like its original was. VII has alot in it including other games and Advent Children. They better put great DLC and the Voice actors from Advent Children should all be Voicing there own unique character. Now if they just are gonna make this to see how big Tifa's boobs are in next gen graphics then forget it. It must have MUCH MORE :gasp:

I as well. Even if this doesn't happen until over a decade from now, then I'll still be a thrilled gamer going on middle aged when a remake happens. xD I am pretty sure it will happen eventually, just not any time soon, but after a lot more back and forth of "there will not be a remake" and "we are interested in a remake of Final Fantasy VII". :gasp:

Still, I do really hate how Square Enix switches back and forth with this though. :gonk: Seriously, they're not good for my health, when I had renewed hope after reading what was said here I almost had a heart attack from excitement that I had been containing within me, but then I realize they will contradict this in about a week or two. :/

It is a tad annoying to hear "it's most likely not going to be made." and then all of a sudden I turn around and hear that some of the staff members want to remake VII. Like pick and choose already! :hmph: I personally think it's horseshit and it makes me mad >=[ tbh, I think it should be left alone. VII already has a million spin-offs and it has a movie as well. Yeah sure VII has a big fanbase but seriously stick with your word either do it or not. I say if their going to do it for VII they should do it for the other FFs 'tis only fair. I don't think a remake is necessary.

I don't think they're necessarily even deciding whether or not to do it, but when, and how much to suggest to fans of the likelihood of it happening or not for expectations to not be too high or low, with a mix of positive and negative.

Way more negative though, but positive now and then so some people see the chance of it happening someday still being alive, but I think what run around they are giving their eager fans just aggravating us more than anything, I know it is starting to get on my nerves... -_-

Personally, we're still happy that Nomura has even stated that he doesn't think one will be made. Then we creamed our pants when Kitase even came out and said that it was very unlikely. :awesome:

Personally, we would wish that it never be made. However, logic would dictate that every FF game will eventually have a remake. :hmmm:

At least it won't be for many a year. :yay:

I dunno I think the whole story is now a mess. There are so many unnecessary sequels and prequels and people argue over what is cannon and what is not cannon. Zack and the Turks are now major characters. People argue whether or not Sephiroth jumped or was thrown into the reactor.

I don't want to see a remake with references to all the other games. If they do remake this game I want to see it completely faithful to the original. (And I would want it to be remade as if Advent Children were never even thought up of. And yes I would want the original outfits, not an emo team, Rinoatifa, I'mstill25Cid. Ya know. I could just see random characters being completely milked in a remake when they originally did not have a big part. :/

An interest is not the same as active pursuit. I'm sure a lot of game developers would be interested in remaking some classic games, but its not going to happen anytime in the near future. Really, he's just giving false hopes to the fans. Even if they were to remake FFVII, do fans honestly think it'd come out this year? We'd be lucky to have it by 2012.

Toriyama might not get tired of people asking him questions about it, but I know I'm getting sick and blooy tired of hearing about it ._.

Having now thought about this more, I do think everyone's going to be fed up of VII. Why not focus on VIII, IX or even better, an actual new original project? At the end of the day, speculation whether they'll do it or not is old news. An interest doesn't immediately clarify it's going ahead. So I see no need in all this excitement.

Exactly! Though I'm totally up for a IX remake, I wouldn't mind at all if Square created something new and original. A lot of people are fed up with the attention VII has been getting. Sequels, prequels, even a film. Granted, it MAY be the best Final Fantasy of all time, but I think Square should let go. They have milked this too much.

There's a lot of fans for the 10 or so other installments of Final Fantasy. Why not pay attention to them too, at least?

*sigh* A more "complete" form? It had been all these story offshoots featured in the other games and media in the Compilation that has meant the original story in FFVII itself feels incomplete. Of course he would like to make it more "complete" - so it ties better with the other entries of the Compilation - most weren't even needed such as Dirge Of Cerberus. This is what happens when something is milked - the original thing feels incomplete.

I don't like how the staff seem divided. One corner says yes to FFVII remake and the other corner says no. Although I'm not too annoyed. What Toriyama says doesn't necessarily mean will happen. He's only expressing an interest. I am expressing my deepest desire for a FFVI remake, and I don't see that happening at the moment. It's not his decision what goes in SE - so even if I am enthusiastic towards a remake, I wouldn't get my hopes up that much.

Also:
“I’m really interested to see this more complete form of Final Fantasy VII portrayed more realistically with the voice and animation and all the suttle expressions there,”

That sounds like hard work. FFXIII as an HD game was a great challenge to make - and a FFVII HD wouldn't be that much easier. It will require a LOT of time, a LOT of money and a LOT of people. I would prefer these resources be splashed out on more original projects.

While I'm not necessarily that against a FFVII remake, it is something I'm not very enthusiastic for. I have played FFVII twice now anyway.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. I believe Square-Enix will NEVER make a Final Fantasy VII remake.

1. why redo a game that's been done when you can make a completely new one?
2. Not EVERYONE loved Final Fantasy VII
3. By remaking VII they would be admitting that it was their best game and they'll never be able to do better. Which they will NEVER admit to.

That, or they just want that huge pile of money that's going to come in if they make it. :mokken:

Of course, even then, they're going to add things to the game to keep making new spin-offs and such. So in the long run, they'll just make more piles of money. :hmph:

All of this speculation is pointless. It's not going to happen in the near future, but we already knew that. Logic would say that it happens eventually. Why? Because there's a massive demand for it. There just isn't a demand of that magnitude for FF 6, 8 or 9. They love all of their projects, but they aren't going to risk damaging one if there isn't a good reason.

FF4 was remade because it was an easy task with regards to the complexity of the game and the DS was a sufficient system for that remake. Portable system games by default won't be held to the same standard as major consoles because they serve a much smaller market.

Btw, the only times I heard about people "sick of it" are when I visit these boards. I consider myself a big FF7 fan and I played FF7 in 1997 and Crisis Core in 2007. I haven't read the novels and I don't own a Cloud action figure. So that's 2 games in a 13 year span. The point is, less than 20% of original FF7 fans played Crisis Core or DoC. So there's 80% left who clearly aren't "sick of it." If you are sick of it you should stop reading novels about things you hate.
