When a major Final Fantasy game comes out Square Enix prepares toys and soft drinks. We’re used to those. They have one more tie-in product for Final Fantasy XIII – perfume.

A month after the game comes out in Japan, fans can purchase a bottle of Lightning eau de toilet. The aroma is described as a sweet peach smell followed by rose and then a feminine musk. Lovely.

You can get 50mLs of Lightning for a suggested retail price of 7,140 yen ($83).

Eh? Did I see that right? Can someone actually clarify to me what eau de toilet means? A perfume with "toilet" in the name doesn't sound good. Or does it actually mean something else entirely?

$83 for the perfume? Seriously, SE! It would be a nice souvenir from Japan though, the next time I go over there I suppose. :hmmm:

It depends whether that was a typo on their site, or it was meant.

The "eau de toilet", I think relates to bathroom spray to make it smell nice.
However, it could be "eau de toile" which again I think refers to perfume but not as heavy on the scent.

Either way, perfume seems a bit random >.>
 
It's probably supposed to say "eau de toilette". I see it all the time on other perfumes like stuff from Victoria's Secret and such. So, it's legitimate.

"Eau de toilette- a perfumed liquid lighter than cologne"
Although literally, it means "toilet water".

Anyway, I'm not surprised by this. After the whole Bella perfume thing... yeah. I don't think Lightning would smell like this, I mean she's a warrior. Maybe I'm taking it a bit too literally but maybe they should have made this fragrance Vanille's.

I guess you're both right. When it comes to Romanised letterings by the Japanese, typos are usually common and understandable.

Asabella, you have a good point there. I wouldn't expect a perfume to be linked with Lightning. It doesn't sound like she would have any perfume on at all for the perfume to smell like her. Vanille and Serah would be more ideal, but since Lightning is seen as the main character I can see why they chose her.
 
Uuuuuh... Right.

Rather than making a cool clothes line based off of their amazing characters, they make a perfume instead! This... is kind of stupid. No offense to anyone ordering, but an 83$ bottle of Lightning juice sounds a little over the top.

I do think it's one of the more sillier products to be put out by a gaming company, but I'm sure people will still get it if they can. I won't be getting it of course. Too much money for something I'll end up using up far too quickly >_<

But, uh, seriously, I prefer accessories/figures >_>

I don't think it'll compare to proper perfumes, not even close. I think it's a nice novelty though and people will enjoy having it/using it I'm sure.

TBH, I'm not really surprised. Didn't they come out with a 'potion'? I think it was a limited edition fruit drink or something. In any case, SE will want to milk the new game with as many gimmicky things as possible.

EDIT: Must be a typo. As people have already said, eau de toilette is just light perfume. I think the 'proper' perfume is the really high concentration liquid. You just need a few dabs and you'll smell delicious for hours.

The idea seems strange to me but it isn't really that surprising. FFXIII is a highly anticipated game so it seems like a profitable decision to base all kinds of wacky merchandise off it. There are plenty of people who will buy anything with a final fantasy logo on it and this product probably just exists to get more money out of those people. But to be honest I don't see anything wrong with buying it if you actually like the scent of it.
 
This is by far the stupidest thing to happen to Final Fantasy since Absolute Virtue. I sincerly hope no one buys this and goes and tells Square Enix to stop selling it's soul to L'oreal and Disney or go and DIE.

Hopefully the former.

To be honest I find the Kingdom Hearts series much more ridiculous then this perfume. Marketing a product of one of your characters seem so common and not strange.

Mixing Final Fantasy with Disney is pretty ridiculous. I understand people like the games and that's fine. I could never get into them because it seems cheap to me. I played through the first one and just hated it. I know it is geared towards young people and children and adults enjoy it to but I simply couldn't. It's much more awkward and unnatural of a mix in my opinion putting a female characters name on a bottle of perfume.

I don't really think that it will ever be very successful as a perfume though, and they are probably better off going down a different avenue. Though I really don't know how products will or would do in Japan because I'm not really in touch with their culture. I know anime is big over there but that is all I really know about their trends. Oh also that they make some great video games :awesome: So maybe it will do well there but it would certainly be a complete bomb in the states because the Final Fantasy name would not carry a perfume very far here.

To answer your post below I would probably enjoy hating on kingdom hearts some more :)

Since I have seemed to move the topic off a bit, would you like to hate on Kingdom Hearts somemore or stick on topic, because frankly not much more needs to be said then

O_O what is this? xD Perfume that Lihtning wears. Ummm well we would know how it smells likle if we can smell pixels hehe. mAYBE SHE DOES ACTUALLY WEAR IT HEHE. :hmmm: Perfume is really random. It would make a nice ift for a irl I supposes hehe

Hm...if Lightning wears perfume, then maybe that Leona Lewis song would make a little more sense...

And all perfume is pretty expensive, unless you barter for it in downtown or something. Most 6-8 oz bottles are like $80, and that's without the lotion/body wash set. My mother in law sells the crap, so naturally I have like ten thousand bottles of perfume sitting in my closet. =\

Most perfume smells bad, but this one would be worth it just for the collectible value. If it's limited edition, you could always sell it later on. =]
