Anyhow, I'm playing FFX today and I'm about to beat down some random baddie in the Omega Ruins with the business end of Wakka's blitzball... when all of a sudden the fucking thing starts chugging and snorting... kinda like Fields does on a Saturday night. As it turns out, whenever I go to kill anyone with Wakka, instead of the camera adjusting for the final beatdown, he just goes into super slow mo and the machine pisses and farts for a good half-minute before the battle ends.

I just vaccummed the thing out (with an extension hose as to keep the actual vaccum away from the PS2 hardware)... and hopefully it'll help. I know it did once before when my PS2 started slowing down.

I guess I have 2 questions, and it sure took me a fucking age to get to them didn't it? The first is... has anyone else experienced this? The second is... if so, did you replace it or simply try to maintain it? If this didn't happen to you, just pretend like it did... just like you do with getting laid.

YES OH YES! Except it died on sports games all the time. I think it hated EA Sports. Everytime it made this weird chugging noise even though it was well-ventilated and whatnot, and just froze the game up. I used to hit it right on the top after, so I didn't even help the situation xD

I think I broke the disc tray cover thing.

Well I was looking on eBay and there are a lot of really good deals for brand new ones (especially in white = score) which I would like to have. I've seen Busta's and it definitely runs smoother. Even when I'm moving shit on the sphere grid it takes a few seconds to show what each new ability is.

Plus my controller sticks sometimes and that's a real pain in the dick, although Busta's is worse. Controller, not dick pain.

I've never had a problem but my cousins just stopped working altogether about two years ago. He knows a lot of people who that's happened to as well, apparently something about them not being made to last more than a certain amount of time. Mine however I got about a year before him, has been dropped off tables many times (never my fault!) and has a soup ring on it and workd perfectly. He doesn't like me very much ;) I say he should have fed it soup, chicken noodle seems to be a good choice.

You must be living in horrid conditions cause I have been using my ps2 since i got it in December of 2000 i believe and its been working fine i dust it out every 2 weeks or so and clean the lens.Well i have it on atleast 6 hours a day playing street fighter III so yeah i think I had problems with the slim ps2 it could just be my bad luck its gave some gave some scraches minor though, its made loud nosies after a month other than that it was quiet before.I still would get a old school ps2 though but thats just my opinion.

I didnt quite have the same problem as you..mines was worse. My ps2 would turn off at random times, sometimes only 5mins after booting up or it could be up to 2 hours, just random. This of course is no use when ur playing an RPG, if u havent saved in a while which with me was quite often (i always forgot>_<) all of a sudden screen goes black and thats it. It eventually got to a point where it was doing it to often that i had to throw it out, i bought a ps3 and havent looked back since.

The cleaning seems to have helped. It still isn't a smooth running beast but it's not chugging and snorting anymore. It actually does what its suppose to. I still think it's on its last legs though. If you listen to it you can really hear how much it struggles to do even the most simple of things (like start-up).

I used to get that a lot. In fact I lost my first PS2 to that sad disease. It starts off like that, then it suffers the "Disc Read Error" problem, and then after a while it eventually stops reading anything.

My second PS2, which I managaged to get as I had a guarantee on the first one, did excactly the same within a year or two... However this one was able to last me until I stopped using it so much (i.e September last year when I got my PS3).

How this second one survived I don't know.. Some days it just wouldn't read the discs... Other days it would have a spaz at certain periods, and I'd end up giving it a good wack and it would work for a bit... Pretty crazy really, but it somehow survived both its spaz attacks and my wacking for a couple of years.

So.. the first one I replaced.. The second one I just kept as it came to the point that I'd actually have to buy a new one, and my wacking trick seemed to work, even though it can't have been healthy for it.

Looking back.. and seeing your tactics... Cleaning it could have helped me :monster:.

I'm shocked my PS2 still works, the way i've treated it. It's been bashed about on train journeys to and from home and my Uni home, it's been to Paris (so on an aeroplane, and you know what baggage handlers are like) and the bggest mishap was when it fell on my head.
Hahaha. I kept it on a really high shelf in my old bedroom, and one day when my friend was over she made me laugh so hard that i fell onto the floor, rolled over a PS2 wire and BAM! PS2 landed on head, head started to bleed, I freaked out and my friend died laughing! Luckily my head was OK after a while and the PS2 still works,. I guess it had a cushy landing! I never clean my PS2, maybe after reading all your posts I should take a little more care of it!

My old ps2 isn't too bad especially for it's age, even though it has a hard time reading blue disks. I also am guilty for dropping it and having friends spill soda over it a couple of times, but I really got to say the ps2 sure can live long depending on conditions and surroundings. In regards to cleaning, yeah I clean it when I see it needs to be so. :awesome:

Mine nackered a while back just like that and i scored a slimline one for £25 off ebay very cheap theses days.

hahaha owned. Ive done that (not the hitting on the head, but had it on a high shelf, step on a chord and BAM! i broke the disk tray cover, but my old mate blu tack fixed it

My Ps2 started doing this a year ago or so.. I was louding up a game of Star Wars Battlefront 2 when this happened. I thought of it as nothing until it completely froze my game. Its started making the exact same sounds as yours did. So i smacked the top of it to shut it up and to get it going, and whatta ya know, it worked again. Now the only problem with the soloution i found out was that it began to scratch my disk.. Now when i play SW:Battlefront the title screen is gone and it freezes in the middle of a game all the time. This also messed up my Castlevania game up so bad it won't even play anymore. In the end, the door off the disk holder thing is broken off and i got scratches all over it now.. And i even took it in, they fixed it, and then it did it again >_<. Now that i have a ps3 it ain't a big deal since i don't use it anymore.

Mine just died completely, you know the window it says browse and the other thing when you don't put a game DvD that's what happened with me -__- I think I need to fix, though it'll cost me around $65 D= I prefer buying a new one than doing that. >_>

i only use mine in my two houses, and ive got two, ones n-whatucallit and others pal. and it has never been damaged.

How long have you had your PS2? It could simply be because the machine's parts are starting to fail. I haven't experienced this problem though, on account of i spilled tea in my PS2, lol.

Mine hasnt had that problem. Mine just wants to take a REALLY long time to read a game and it is picky on the games it wants to read. What sucks is that the games I want to play, it doesnt want to read. Ive tried cleaning it, but it doesnt seem to help.
