Smilie Clean up/Give GMods Smilie power?

So in my request to have my own monster, and looking through the smilie list, there's a huge amount of emoticons that aren't, or haven't been used it months...

The selection of Inuyasha and Final Fantasy emotes? Why? The 20 or so Pandas we have floating around? Why? The little guys with the signs? Why?

I want to propose two things with this thread:

One. Give GMods, or maybe even regular mods (possibly unneccessary on that one, but we'll talk) the permission in the ACP to edit the emoticon list. Because with the 4 Admins we have, albeit they're the ones most responsible, but also with lives that they spend on outside the forum. The GMods are seen a lot more frequently on the forum and have a lot more freetime on their hands.

Two. Clean up the list. We can use this thread to post smilies that we think should be removed because they're not used or haven't been used.. remove some emoticons because there's duplicates (I saw at least 3...) and just overall, separate it into sections and clean it up.. regular face emoticons, animated emoticons, larger emoticons...

It's been discussed several times in HQ. Lack of time/effort on the Admins' part isn't the reason smilies are still floating around.
 
Our smileys are good. Though the 24 panda ones are kinda useless. As for the Inuyasha ones that was Mandi and so were the pandas. So it is pretty much Mandi who added 24 pandas and inuyasha plus others like Edward Elric and such. I would say just take out most of the pandas. I only see some popular ones like fap panda and boogie and the panda wave one... Still what even is the point of this? They are just emotes. If you dont like them do not use them. I only think some really need death xD
 
I think that there are a lot of smileys which had been added in bulk which people never use, or had never used. At the same time quite a few smileys that people used to love got deleted. The other day Squee and I noticed that Vamp has disappeared, for example.

I guess that it would be hard to really decide which smileys to delete though, without consulting everyone on the forum or having a vote-off (though that could be fun :wacky: ).

On the whole though I don't mind so much. The main smileys which I love do still exist, minus Vamp. So long as Sad2, Brooding, Awesome, Woot and Monster aren't ever lynched then I'll be happy. I don't mind the masses of smileys which I never use because (while they don't appeal to me) they may appeal to someone else.

Again I really see no point in taking some of those out... Just to let you know Squee if you are going to try and get the admins to lynch Pingas, Prepare for a brutal fight with Damon :lew: The birthday cake one is for b day threads :gasp:

That is because only Damon himself uses it :mokken:
 
Squee I agree with pretty much that whole list.. Can't say that I've ever seen any of those used before in context. =/

Although I do like this one :surprised:
 
I honestly can't see why this would be of any help to the forums at all, smileys aren't really large images or anything like that, I think having too many is better than not having enough.

If you don't like a smiley, don't use it. I don't think they need to be removed because they're never used, there's really no point to it.
They're just... there.
The more the better really.
 
I like the panda(not all smileys but some of them are nice in my opinion). I don't really see how the removal of certain smileys can make a difference, but that is just my opinion.
 
While some of the smilies may be incredibly useless, such as the FF / Inuyasha character smilies and those damned Pandas... Andrew raises a good point, it's not like they're doing much harm - okay, they clog up the smilie list, but that's about it. I think something was said in the Staff section when the smilie problem was brought up (we hate the pandas. Like. A lot) I think it was said that removing the smilies could break some forum code... or something. I'd have to re-read, so don't quote me on that. I know there's some reason we can't just delete the useless smilies.

As for giving Gmods that much ACP access... that's quite irrelevant really, as that would just make us Admins with a different coloured username, which is quite pointless, since those guys are admins for a reason, and I think us Gmods are quite happy with what services we can already provide for the forums, without being given any extra tools or responsibilities.
 
I don't really have a problem with any smilies, but when I randomly see newbies using FF smilies completely out of context in greetings threads and the SB... I twitch. The panda smilies are downright useless.

This is the reason.

Giving the GMods this power is stepping on the toes of the Admins, don't you think? Are there many smiley's on this site that really shouldn't be removed? Absolutely. Is it worth the risk of screwing with the site's code just to remove smiley's that people find unnecessary? It's not worth it really. If it was worth the risk, many smiley's would have already been removed.

Contrary to popular belief, Admins do actually do their job. :lew: This site runs just fine, no reason to change that.
 
I'm not quite sure I understand why giving GMods one more permission in the ACP would put them in the same rankings as Admins. :hmmm: There's still a world of a difference in what the Admins can do that all the others can't.. I was just bringing up that they have bigger lives than the rest of us, and probably couldn't be bothered. :wacky:

I also don't think that removing smilies would really mess with the forum code, at all. I've messed around with an ACP before and unless someone doesn't actually know what they're doing, things should be completely fine. It runs the same risk with anything you do in the ACP.
 
I think what Mark meant is that giving Gmods that permission for something such as deleting smilies in the ACP is quite unnecessary, especially since there would be no more removing of smilies happening anymore. LG's orders. It was his own statement about the 'breaking of vbcodes in old posts' which I don't really know why that should be an issue. BustaMo and I discussed about removing some of the unnecessary ones and I did remove some once upon a time, but LG discouraged it right after since he didn't think it's a good idea to delete any more. That's pretty much the gist of it.
 
I'm curious as to what the three mods at the bottom who are reading this, plan on saying. Jay, Tia, Dan? Anything? :wacky:

Otherwise, I guess if it's LG's orders, ain't nothing to be done about it. Clearly the man can't be swayed and we don't want to piss him off further. It was just a thought since a lot of it is clutter, harmless clutter, sure... but clutter. And I hate clutter. >.<

So if the 3 of you have nothing else to add, I guess we've pretty much wrapped this up and somebody can close it.

...Although, Mits. What's the likelihood of my ladymonster being added?


There was quite the demand for her in a thread in Spam. :wacky:
