Industry sources tell Kotaku that Microsoft and Sony are planning on issuing a new console generation only in 2014

A few days ago a rumor that circulated stated that Nintendo is planning on announcing a new games console that will be the heir to the Wii and will be released in 2012. Now, industry sources claim that Sony and Microsoft are not planning on joining Nintendo any time soon.

Different sources told Kotaku that the fourth generation f the PlayStation and the third generation of the Xbox will not arrive on the market before 2014 – and that the companies are planning on “squeezing” everything they can from their current consoles.

“Both Microsoft and Sony are signaling each other that they’re delaying the next consoles in order to milk the current generation”, said one of the sources to Kotaku. Other sources claim they also understood that companies are not planning on launching new console until 2014, but it is possible that they’ll expedite it to 2013 if they feel pressured.

The launch of the new controllers, the Move for the PS3 and the Kinect to the Xbox 360 suggests that the two companies do have plans to continue and support their current consoles in the foreseeable future – because if they were going to release new consoles anytime soon they would have launched the new controllers along with them.

However, if Nintendo does launch a new console in 2012 and if the console is more powerful than the PS3 and the Xbox 360 – both companies may need to expedite the next consoles: the two current consoles include outdated hardware, and a lot of gamers are becoming impatient along with different developers who claim that the outdated consoles limit development of games.

If 2014 is indeed the year in which we’ll see the next generations of the consoles, it will make the current console generation to the longest generation in the history of game consoles. Normally such a “generation” lasts between five to seven years but it is now expected to last between 8-9 years.

I heard Sony was going to stop making new systems, and just support other systems with some new titles, is this not true?

If this is the case, I can look forward to a PS4, but... *shudders* I find it scary to think of how much money such a console would cost, being an improvement over the PS3 that was excruciatingly painfully expensive at launch.

As for a new Xbox console, all I can say is make it so it does not have such an awful overheating problem, I swear the 360 is multipurpose...as a video gaming console, and a heater. >_>

The Xbox 360, Wii, and PS3 are old in tech years—a lot of gamers are ready for new consoles, when tablets and smartphones are starting to produce console quality graphics, there’s a problem. But there’s a vocal group of gamers that don’t want new consoles, they’d rather see the current generation continue. Today we’re going to explore in-depth if this is right, or if these gamers are being selfish—and holding the industry back.


More life Left In Current Consoles

One of the main reasons for dragging out this generation is some gamers believe current consoles haven’t been maxed out. Look how far they’ve advanced since 2006, imagine how good they’ll be if developers can work with them in a few more years, the graphics will blow us away, right?

Wrong, they don’t have a lot of life left in them. Sure the visuals can be improved a little—but at what cost? A worse framerate, no anti-aliasing, those sacrifices shouldn’t have to be made to make a game “prettier”. I use to think consoles had a few more tricks in their sleeves, until I purchased a gaming PC last year. It showed me how great games can look, maxed out and running at 60fps. I’m ready for my console games to look this good and buttery smooth.


No Great Games At Launch

Ugh, when a new console launches there’s hardly any games within the first year. It’s drought after drought, and most of the time, you’re still playing great games from last generation, waiting for some awesome new games to come out, for the paperweight you just dropped a few hundred bucks on.

To everyone that said that, here’s my response—that’s how “every” console launch is. It’s insulting to suggest that this generation should last longer, because there will be no games at the launch of a new one. Nothing of value would get accomplished; we would only delay the inevitable. If you’re thinking they could use that time to produce more games, throw that thought out of your mind now. Do you think gamers actually want 100 launch titles? We would become overwhelmed and some great games would go unnoticed, it’s good that there isn’t a lot of launch titles.


Dollar, Yen, Pound Etc…

The economy sucks now, who can afford a new console? Hell, can Sony & Microsoft (mainly Sony) even afford to launch another console without going bankrupt?

Yeah, times are hard, and there’s more important things to buy than a new console—but that shouldn’t stop them from being released. The big three need to lower their expectations in terms of sales going into the next generation. And when they do release new consoles, price them right. They can’t be priced higher than $399.99, if so—they blew it. Nintendo is wondering why the 3DS isn’t selling like they expected, the truth is a lot of gamers don’t want to spend $250 on a handheld, especially a Nintendo one.


The Truth

I don’t buy any of the above excuses (except the money one). Here’s why “some” gamers really don’t want new consoles. I’ll start with attachment, it’s hard to say goodbye to a console you’ve had for years, it starts to feel like your friend, think of all the great memories you made together. Well, that’s the wrong way to think about a console, you should think of it as a lover that you’re starting to grow apart from. Yes, you once loved them, and you had a lot of fun—but it’s time to let go of the past, it’s never going to work, so man/woman up and end things.

The other reason is we wannabe the “cool kid on the block”. When I was growing up, there was this kid named C.B. that got every console (at launch). Everyone wanted to go over his house; this made the other kids feel inferior, because they were still playing old consoles. We’ve grown up, but this is still going on—you feel behind the times and “uncool” when you’re still gaming on an old system, while other gamers have moved on. So subconsciously you’re like, “I don’t want new consoles, I want to be everyone’s equal when it comes to gaming”.

By 2013, this current generation needs to come to an end. If it goes any longer, the industry will suffer. Sure, games will still sell, but what about innovation? The gaming industry is and always will be progressive. And as gamers, we should want to see the industry move forward, not stand in one spot, awkwardly shuffling it’s feet, waiting for someone to come talk to it. Hold on, that was my senior prom…

That last article is utter bullshit..it has been written and viewed by a PC gamer..I dont want to spend 1k for a game pc nor for a new console ...I dont think ps3 has been maxed out...also MS beetter invent like a quadrupled layered disc or something before making a new console...PS3 has just begun blooming untill psn madness happened..fuck graphics geez!!!!!!!!
 
Sony has confirmed that work on a "future platform" to follow the PS3 "is already under way".

Sony's executive vice president and chief financial officer Masaru Kato made the revelation on a conference call to investors today. He was asked to explain increased research and development (R&D) costs.

"For the home equipment the PS3 still has a product life," he said, "but this is a platform business, so for the future platform - when we'll be introducing what product I cannot discuss that - but our development work is already under way, so the costs are incurred there."

Kato's comments are in direct contrast those of Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai's. Hirai said, three months ago in March, that "a near-future PS4 or next-generation home console is not something that we are even debating now".
Hirai stressed that Sony wasn't "even at the half-way point" in PS3's lauded 10-year plan.

This console cycle may be destined to last longer than previous generations, but there are already rumours of top-tier publishing partners receiving prototype dev kits of Microsoft's new Xbox.

Meanwhile Nintendo has plans to formerly unveil Wii 2 - codenamed Project Cafe - at E3 next month.

I'm really looking forward to the new Nintendo system. If what I've read is correct, Project Cafe will be the first Console that can hold its own against a PC. Of course, PC Gaming when it comes to the technical side will always be better. However, to see a console that can perform at half the specs of a PC has me somewhat excited. It could be that leap that finally makes me take Console Gaming seriously. :jess:
 
Really there going work on another console for 2014? well, I'm not going be stupid and buy them right away like I did with my PS3....

And I highly doubt that the PS3 has maxed out everything yet, I mean the PS2 didn't get maxed out till the tail end of before the PS3 came out, and the same thing with the PS1 for the PS2... Xbox 360 might be maxed out...

But my real question is are they going make the console's backwards compatible? how is the PSN going work for the PS4? do we keep everything we bought for PS3? Can we download it onto the PS4? Are they going shoot for 3D? (please god no I can't even watch 3d movies) how much more are the games going be for a new game on the next consoles? (betting $70-$90 for a game by then... ugh)
 
To be perfectly honest, I actually doubt the validity of this article. Are they working on the next console? No doubt about it. Possible names for both sides? Definitely. 2014? Unlikely. I hate to tell you, but with the stacking abilities of the PS3 (I'm speaking only for the PS3, and not the 360 given I do not own one) I can't see it being passed along soon. We are still not scratching the full potential of the PS3, so you might as well stop looking for the next "big one" for a while. Although, I do imagine Microsoft might want to start looking into something a bit better than a CDDVD for their games.

The question is do you wanna pay $60 for a game or at least $70 if not more for a game...

That and I wont believe till I hear something straight from the companies, I mean I know they are working on the new systems, or at least talking about it, but till they say an "official" statement about a release date I'm not going worry about it.
 
Rumour: PS4 to feature Kinect-like motion support, 2012 launch mentioned

PlayStation 4 will have motion controls on par with Kinect, according to a heavy DigiTimes rumour.

The report claims that production on the machine will begin at the end of the year for a 2012 launch from Foxconn and Pegatron Technology.
It also cites a shipment number of 20 million units for the launch.
It follows several reports in the last couple of weeks of a E3 2012 unveil for the next Xbox, with Nintendo also prepping Wii U for a release next year.

Kotaku had previously reported a 2014 launch at the latest for both the new Sony and MS machines, or 2013 at the earliest if shoved.
Recently, however, SCEA boss Jack Tretton seemed to dismiss any talk of a next-gen PlayStation arriving soon.

“What we’ve seen from the competition is trying to add features that already exist in PlayStation 3. … I wouldn’t look for any discussion of a next generation PlayStation for quite some time,” he said.

Here’s the salt. There’s plenty of it.

Id like to just be able to play a multiplayer game with my mate and not have it lag.
They should get that right first before anything else.

Also lol at the rumours. Theyre just rumours, nowt more.
 
Why even bother with the PS4 when we've hardly scratched the surface with the PS3 yet? I read somewhere that Sony intends to give the PS3 a ten-year life cycle at the very least. Having another one would be completely pointless.
