Does anyone really like a NPC? I've noticed that some of the NPCs in the series have huge fanbases, particularly Xu and Beatrix. Are there any other NPCs in the series that you really like? That seem really popular to you? If so, why do you like them, and why do you think they appeal to other fans of the series, despite never actually joining the team?

I've always liked Biggs, Wedge, and Jessie from VII. I really don't why. Probably because the beginning of VII when they are in Midgar is my favorite part of the game. I was very sad when they died :(

If Blank counts, I really like him. He looked cool and I would have liked it if he became a permanent member of the party.

I actually kind of liked O'aka from X :lew: I thought he was kind of amusing--not only his high spirits in such a time of distress, but also the fact that (if I remember correctly) he seemed to be the only person in the world who had his accent XD And even though
his true self wasn't in it all that much
, I did also like the King of Baron in IV. He seemed like a really pleasant person, and I thought it was cool that
he was able to turn into one of the party's summons--and as Odin, no less :awesome:
And I agree about Blank, too--all of Tantalus were interesting characters, but for some reason Blank stood out the most, I think because his face being partially covered gave him a certain element of mystery :hmmm:

Oh, and General Leo from VI, of course :yay: He was awesome, and even though technically you did get to see a battle with him, I really would've loved to have seen him as a full-on party member. His strong sense of honor in the face of most everyone around him being corrupt was very moving.

I've always had a bit of a soft spot for the rather random ones who make a strange one off appearance or are just stuck in one place doing the same thing over and over again. In this regard the jogger in Balamb Garden is definitely a favorite :lew:

As for more detailed NPCs I really like Sir Fratley. A mysterious warrior with amnesia, traveling the world and vanquishing evil. It just doesn't get any cooler than that.

I've always liked Julia and Raine from FF8...Laguna's leading ladies. Each woman has their own aura and while they are quite different from each other, I'm drawn to their story, even if it was only a small chunk in the game. I can't really say if they appeal to other fans of the series, but for those that do, it's probably the fact that they loved the same man at different times, and both led a tragic fate in the end, though they did live a fullfilling life I'm sure. Julia, simply because she had a daughter and married General Caraway. Did she love him? I don't know, the game never really hinted that, but she was comforted by him so that says something. Her song, "Eyes On Me" is also quite popular in the series, seeing as her feelings for Laguna in that song fits the theme for Squall and Rinoa as well. Then there's Raine of course, whom Laguna fell in love with, and continued to love even after her death. Everything was done very well, and I like the fact that there's really no mushy 'happy ending' for them, but both died quite young. You sorta get a realistic feel from it all, I suppose...or well, that's just the way I see it.

I think the queen of all NPC's is Cosmos from Dissidia.

Who would not want to play as her or have her in your team?

Outside of them the guys from FFIX Balank, Marcus & the guy with the hammer.......Cinna!

They were all okay fighters for there part, in fact they are able to be put in your team, at a price.......they replace Quina,Eiko and Freya and gain there abilities an Stats so Blank has Whitemage skills and and Cinna very convincingly uses Quinas Blue mage abilities.

A not so obvious 1 is Rassler from FFXII put him in the team instead of Vaan and its a whole different fucking game!!

I really liked Dyne from FFVII. He was such a cool character in that he was the biological father of Marlene...and didn't find out that she was alive until after he had tried to seek revenge for her death. And then he tragically commits suicide.

Wow, how could I have forgotten General Leo! He is definently one of my favorite NPCs, and I would have liked to have had him in my party.

I also like Raine from VIII even though she had very little screen time. And of all FF games, the end of VIII makes me cry the hardest. :(

Dyne from final fantasy 7, he had my sympathy, being stuck in the prison, and even though he was only in the game for like 10 minutes he was a good character, and he was just so cool.

Baku from Final fantasy 9, i like him more than blank as he had a signature catchphrase kinda thing, granted it was a large sneeze, but he was just a good leader and a generally nice guy,
Especially after the attack on lindblum and he offers to search the city for Garnet/Dagger

Jecht from FF10, he is a damn awesum NPC, granted being sin kinda made him doucheish, but hey, he was still an awesum character, in design appearence, speech and just everything.
I nearly cried when Tidus shouted "I HATE YOU" and Jecht replied "I know" it was just so sweet as it showed jecht knew he had screwed up

FFVI's General Leo deserves many mentions. Compared to the maniacal Kefka, Leo's intentions are wholly noble and honourable, which creates an interesting antithesis between the two of them. He's similar to FFIX's General Beatrix in that neither chooses to go along with their masters' plans when atrocity would be involved. Both of them want to do what is right and tragically, unlike Beatrix, Leo's good intentions earn a rather sad ending for him. It's characters like Beatrix and Leo where people realise that there is some sanity in the world after all.

FFIX's Blank is also one I have high regards for. It's probably just his demeanour as a whole. Like Zidane, he behaves rather coolly. Like Zidane, I see recklessness in him as well as bravery - see what he did to protect Zidane and the others during the petrification of Evil Forest. I would have loved to have him in my party for a longer period of time as well - he and Beatrix.

Of course - Jecht. He's usually a hit-and-miss character, but I just love how his character turns out in the story and how we can make parallels between him and Tidus in their personal plights in Spira. Yes, he does start off sounding like a complete arsehole (usually through the eyes of Tidus), but towards that scene in the interior of Sin, I did get rather emotional. Seeing him and Tidus there was just one of the most touching moments for me in FFX.

I personally also liked FFXIII's Cid Raines. I err...won't go into spoilers just in case, but he has good intentions for humankind on Cocoon. It's just a little sad to see the outcome of his struggle though. I must admit though, how the story executes the character from beginning to end isn't the best I have ever seen. Then again, there are a lot of storytelling flaws in FFXIII.

I actually really liked Jecht a lot as a character too, come to think of it :hmmm: He was actually one of the most dynamic characters in the game, NPC or PC; his personality had a lot of different facets, and they were portrayed in very interesting or emotionally gripping ways. His story and the way he interacted with Tidus was by far the best part of the game for me.

And Dyne was quite interesting too, though he had a significantly smaller role in his game. I loved seeing all the backstories with the non-lead characters in FFVII, but the scenes between him and Barret were among the most powerful I thought, even though they didn't end on a great note :/

Baku (FFIX) - he's very funny the way he so's ruthless towards the members of Tantalus, and his constantly forgetting Dr Tot's name. Gwhahahahaha! :)

O'aka (FFX) - I really liked his wheeler-dealer personality, he's like a Del Boy of the FF world. And it's a very disarming and surprisingly sweet moment
when you find out why he's been so eager to help Yuna on her journey.

Nida (FFVIII) - this is just a rather bizarre personal choice really. I like how he's the one person other than Squall/Zell/Selphie to pass the SeeD exam, but remains fairly anonymous (so I sort of identify with him). It's also funny when he puts Squall on the spot and asks him to give a speech to Balamb Garden. Plus I read a fanfiction about him once which I really liked XD

I happen to like Reeve.........(FFVII)

I mean out of all the people in Shinra he is the most decent.........he did piss me off up until he was revealed to be (you know who-no spoilers) :hmph:

Plus he did leak some valuable information from Shinra to the cloud and the rest of the party just in case they were about to do something terrible.............

Does Jecht really count? you get to use him in Dissidia........He would have been a great bonus BlitzBall player in FFX.

I personally also liked FFXIII's Cid Raines

Massive agreement there Flure!
A decent guy bent to anothers will but still holds enough strength of mind to fight for his people..........no spoilers right..........also a hard enemy to defeat!

Another NPC I like is.......Birahn The Ronso.....I like Khimari but Birahn was effin huge
a true Ronso Warrior!

I'm surprised that no one has said Golbez yet! They even made a battle sprite for him! I remember when I was little watching my mom play IV, and I saw the scene with FuSoYa and Golbez fighting Zemus. I was confused as to why Golbez was fighting a bad guy, haha. I, to this day, wish I could have had Golbez in my party. And honestly I always thought of him to be very similar to Dark Knight Cecil, but with the ability to use black magic, in other words the Anti-Cecil Paladin. But then Dissidia really screwed with my mind as far as Golbez is concerned.

I have a strange fondness for II's Queen Hilda. She was the most memorable character in the game for me. But of course, not that many people have played II, and of those that have sometimes I feel like the only one who liked it.

I also love most of the guys who follow you around in X. Maechen and his world-building ramblings, Donna's random bitchiness, Rin and his every confidence in our victory, Gatta and Luzzu and their sad story.

Has no one mentioned the Turks yet? Really? I suppose they're more enemies than NPCs, but still.

I know you asked specifically for NPC's which do not join the party, but to me, having only played some Dissidia, Crisis Core (i stopped playing both cause I am trying to play all FF's in order), and FF1&2 for PSP, my favorite so far would be Ricard.
I know I know, he joins the party and all, but when I first encountered him, I looked online and noticed there is barely anything about him. For me, I like him overall because of his look (he looks cool in the PSP version at least), and because of the fact that he is a Dragoon. Im not even sure if he is popular among other fans of the series, it doesn't really seem so. I guess this is because he doesn't play any major roles that I know of, and a lot of fans of the series despise FF2.
