Jade & Goro confirmed for Mortal Kombat

According to the latest issue of Game Informer, Jade and Goro will feature in the 2011 version of Mortal Kombat.

Boss character Goro is shown firing a projectile In the magazine, and his signature Goro’s Lair stage is also seen.
Game Informer describes the remake of this classic background as “dark and grizzly, featuring bodies hanging from the ceiling.”
Jade, according to the mag, is shown in a mix of her Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 and Mortal Kombat Deception outfits, while also showing off her trademark boomerang projectile.
In addition to the confirmation of these two characters, there was also mention of plans for a possible Xbox 360 exclusive character to mirror PS3’s Kratos, although it was also mentioned that there is no character planned at the present time.
Mortal Kombat is slated for release on PS3 and Xbox 360 this year.

The job profile of a freelance 3D artist has ignited fresh rumours about the existence of Mortal Kombat: HD Kollection.

Patrick Delmastro claims to have worked (from March 2009 onwards) on three projects, one of which is a title known as Mortal Kombat HD Arcade Kollection which he lists as being a PS3-exclusive.

This isn’t the first time rumours regarding the existence of the Kollection has emerged, as both GameStop and GAME listed back in September 2010.

GAME is still carrying the listing, while GameStop has taken it down.

The Kollection is rumoured to include: Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat II, Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3, and a demo of Warner’s new MK game on a single Blu-ray disc.

The new MK game is slated to release sometime this year for PS3 and Xbox 360.

Ed Boon tweets hints about possible DLC characters for Mortal Kombat

Ed Boon has hinted around at some of the characters that may end up being releases in DLC packs for Netherealm’s upcoming Mortal Kombat game.

According to a tweet from Boon, courtesy of Giant Bomb, Boon wants his followers to choose between some of the series iconic fighters.
Here’s the tweet in full:
“Tell me your order of preference for a DLC character. Rain, Shinnok, Kenshi, Robo-smoke, or new character?”

Ah, how did I not know of a new Mortal Kombat? I wish I owned a PS3 to play it on a better system :/

I like how it looks, and for a minute, I didn't recognize Goro in the game screenshot, looked different from what I remembered. In this game, his face is different xD

Mortal Kombat to get webisode series

The Mortal Kombat film reboot may be dead, but it seems there is some live action hope for fans of the series thanks to director Kevin Tancharoen.

According to horror fan site Bloody Disgusting, Tancharoen will begin filming a 10-part Mortal Kombat webisode series next month, following in the same vein as the pilot which appeared last year.
There isn’t a lot of information about the project other than Jai White’s continued involvement as Jax, however it’s nice to know that someone has at least managed to salvage something from the taster.

Mortal Kombat 9 looks like it’s set to reinvigorate the violent fighting franchise, something it’s needed for a long time. The brutal gameplay footage that’s been shown around the internet only increases my excitement for the game, and today we learn when the game will finally grace your console, assuming you’re from the US.

Warner Premiere has today issued an official press release to announce their upcoming ten episode, live-action digital series based on Mortal Kombat. A formality to confirm what was already widely reported January 15th; the release reiterates Kevin Tancharoen's role as director of the shorts, with filming set to start in Vancouver this February.

In reference to Tancharoen's work on the well known Mortal Kombat: Rebirth viral video [full story], the press release makes deliberate note of it's status as an "unofficial fan short." The ten episodes are also described as revealing unseen history regarding the characters fans "know and love", suggesting the digital series may have much closer ties to the video game canon than the urbanized versions seen in Rebirth.

No casting was revealed in the press release, but Michael Jai White has already made it known he will return to reprise his Rebirth role as Jax, appearing alongside confirmed characters; Scorpion, Johnny Cage, and Liu Kang.

If the digital shorts do indeed elaborate on the history of the icons of the franchise, they will be part of a noted effort to explore the characters and their stories, adding to animated vignettes that have already been released to reveal more about Scorpion, Sub-Zero, and Mileena in the lead-up to the game.

MK is coming out in april right? :D I cant wait, although I will wait a few weeks to hear the reviews and ratings etc. on gametrailers or IGN.

The real live action episodes I will definitely watch ! or download eventually...it seems promising....

My MK grooves are coming back but I really hope the game doesnt let down and is not too repetitive.

I just saw those x-ray moments 5 minutes ago, they are freeking brutal..
but Im confused can you tell those moves are midway of battle etc. or are they finishing moves?
 
I think the X-Ray moves are only available when your opponent is severely on the verge of being "FINISHED".

So, I guess it is a type of fatality of some sort.
 
Those X-ray moves look freaking sick. It really adds brutality to the game. *no pun intended* A lot of them are very cringe worthy. Also did I just see Baraka in there? Seriously I can't wait for this game to come out in April.

[Gamasutra's editor at large Chris Morris talks to director Kevin Tancharoen on how the genuinely accidental YouTube release of his short spec film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth led to a gig with Warner Bros. making live-action episodes ahead of the new Mortal Kombat game.]

When the live action short film Mortal Kombat: Rebirth hit YouTube in March 2010, people started buzzing. The film, starring Michael Jai White and Jeri Ryan, was not only cool to watch, it was reverential towards the classic Midway-originated fighting game series.

Director Kevin Tancharoen had hoped to use it to lobby Warner Bros. to sign him on to steer a reimagined MK film.

While he didn’t quite make it to that level, the company has contracted him to direct a series of live-action shorts that will likely lead up to the release of the new Mortal Kombat game in April. Ironically, though, it all started with a mistake.

“I am not the most technically savvy YouTube person,” Tancharoen tells Gamasutra in an interview. “What came out wasn’t the final product in my mind. I wasn’t done yet."

"It was still in its rough phase, but I couldn’t send a 2GB file over email, so my friend said I could create a private page on YouTube and sent it to him to review. It turns out it wasn’t that private.”

Fans and gaming outlets quickly found the video – which has since racked up over 5 million views. As it went viral, though, Tancharoen had no idea.

“I looked on Twitter and saw MK was trending and thought ‘Oh God, did someone beat me to the punch?’,” he says.

When he realized it was his film, his fears doubled: certain rights hadn’t been secured – including with his cast. “The actors could have quickly rebelled against me,” he says. “Thank God people liked it, because it could have gone really bad.”

Instead of rebelling, the cast rallied. White, Ryan, Ian Anthony Dale and the rest of the actors featured in the video are currently in negotiations to star in the digital shorts.

Tancharoen says there will be nine episodes in the MK live action series. Each will run for 7-10 minutes – and will explore the history of the characters in the game. (Some of the big characters, like Scorpion and Sub Zero might have their stories split into two parts.)

Filming is scheduled to begin in February in Vancouver. Warner is still determining exactly where the shorts will be released – though iTunes is a likely choice. Mortal Kombat creator Ed Boon is working with Tancharoen as he goes through pre-production. That was particularly exciting for the director, as his obsession with the franchise is … well, thorough.

“We’re working together hand in hand,” he says. “I’ve got to admit, I had a little fanboy geek moment when I met him. I flashed back to when I was 12 or 13 and played the first game and was obsessed with it. … He was very, very happy with the short. He knows it took liberties with the universe of Mortal Kombat, but was okay with that. It blows my mind.”

The series, of course, won’t be MK’s first trip to the live action world. A pair of films in the mid-90s met with mixed success, but lodged themselves in the pop culture mindset (especially the iconic theme song).

Tancharoen realizes there will be the inevitable comparisons, but says he doesn’t feel a sense of pressure to compete with people’s memories of the films (though he, like others, prefers to forget 1997’s Mortal Kombat: Annihilation).

“Everyone knows the techno song,” he says. Everyone knows the characters. It has that fun value to it. … We’re taking the essence of Mortal Kombat and the thrill you get from playing it and creating a new generation on it. I don’t think anyone is so tied to the original films that they can’t see another movie if it’s not shot like that.”

While Tancharoen’s pet project certainly has gotten his foot in the door at Warner, he’s not forgetting this original goal. The series of digital shorts is good, he says, but he still hopes to take Mortal Kombat to the big screen himself.

“The bigger thing for me, of course, is I want to translate this to a feature,” he says. “I would love to tell the stories that lead the character up to a certain point, then have them merge together in a big 3D movie.”

The two Mortal Kombat movies, Mortal Kombat and Mortal Kombat: Annihilation are finally coming to Blu-Ray. Though this isn’t news in itself, the movies will come with a free download code for some Mortal Kombat content, provided you have the Playstation 3 version of the game.

The movies will come to shelves on the same date as the upcoming Mortal Kombat game (April 19, 2011) and the code that comes with the movies is an unlockable “Klassic” costume for Jade. While there is no official word whether the Xbox players can secure this content, it looks unlikely as Warner Bros are very much showing their love for the PlayStation 3 (with the exclusive inclusion of Kratos, Stereoscopic 3D). The Mortal Kombat Blu-Rays will retail for $19.98 and also include free digital copies.

The Mortal Kombat series has gone through many changes over the years. Its roster steadily exploded; its 2D digitized characters gave way to polygonal models; and its gameplay followed suit, moving into a three-dimensional plane. Its characters went toe-to-toe with some of DC Comics' superheroes. But for the ninth game in the fighting series, Mortal Kombat is returning to its roots with gameplay that harks back to its arcade days and a reimagining of popular characters and backgrounds. We spoke with Paolo Garcia, lead designer at NetherRealm Studios, to get a better idea of what to expect from the new Mortal Kombat.

GameSpot: It seems that fighting games are experiencing a resurgence in popularity. Why do you think that is and how has that influenced the development of Mortal Kombat?

Paolo Garcia: I think fighting games are more popular again partially because of the video game industry's huge growth in recent years and because so many more households have broadband Internet now. Social networking and video-sharing sites have made it so fans can get an e-mail directing them to a cool combo video or easily search for videos like that, which in turn has piqued a lot of gamers' curiosity and given them something to aspire to.

GS: The series has such an enormous roster of characters and such a rich backstory. How do you go about deciding which characters to use and why just focus on MK 1 through 3?

PG: The team wanted to start at the beginning again with this game and create a way for us to include new and interesting stories featuring people's favorite characters while still bringing in some of the magic of the arcades of the '90s. We have been working to make everything in the latest Mortal Kombat feel like a flashback, from the overall look, environmental feel, gameplay, story, and player roster. We wanted people playing to think, "This takes everything I loved about Mortal Kombat and displays it with current technology."

GS: Was there any inclination to create brand new characters for this game or were you always planning to go with returning characters from the start?

PG: We wanted to return to the original Mortal Kombat, Mortal Kombat 2, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 characters from the beginning. We have tinkered with the idea of having a small number of non-original characters in the game and might have some surprises in store for players.

GS: What are some of the lessons learned from previous MK entries that affected the design process for the latest game?

PG: The biggest lesson we've learned was planning for the tweaking of moves after the game ships. We prepared for this from the beginning of the current game's development and have built most of the gameplay around adjustable values. This will allow us to adjust some things, if needed, after the community gets its hands on the game. We also wanted to give fans features and game elements they have been asking for, which is why we have a strictly 2D fighting plane and a return of classic moves, like Sub-Zero's ice clone, Cyrax's net, the classic version of Scorpion's teleport punch, Reptile's force balls, and lots of other cool things that players will discover as they go through the game.

GS: This Mortal Kombat will feature a dedicated Tag mode. How does this complicate things on the development side? Does balance become an even bigger issue?

PG: Tag Team mode does scale up complexity of the player's available attack and defensive tools exponentially, but we were aware of this and preparing for it from the beginning. A lot of planning and reworking of those tag abilities have gone into what players can and can't do.

GS: Obviously, people get a kick out of seeing fatalities, but can you explain what actually goes into creating these events for the game? We're assuming it's more than just "Now, make that guy's head explode!"

PG: We have had several fatality brainstorming sessions. People will pool together fatality ideas they've been holding on to, and we work together as a group to weed out the best ones, come up with the ideal ways to go about creating the assets needed, and figure out how to implement them into the game. There is a good amount of trial and error as we figure out what can work. That being said, there are also several of them that are just spontaneous--a team member's "Eureka!" moment that just works.

GS: Finally, Mortal Kombat has endured for all these years and remains a popular series. What do you attribute that to?

PG: The Mortal Kombat franchise has enjoyed huge success over the last 20 years in gaming and other entertainment mediums because of the rich story and the fun factor. The games are so much fun to play with friends or on your own. Another big factor is the expertise of the team currently working on the game--many of whom have worked on several of the Mortal Kombat games going all the way back to the beginning. There is a lot of great passion for the franchise at NetherRealm.

All I can say is...Thank god one fighting game is going back to its roots....Mortal Kombat was the only fighting game I did like...up till..3 or 4...not sure which i started to get annoyed with it....
