What is the difference between a geek and a nerd?

To me a nerd is a person who pursues the academic field and is usually socially inept, while a geek is someone who usually has friends but comes off a bit weird due to being a bit wacky or having weird interests.

We actually had a short discussion about this in my semantics class. A nerd would be someone who is very intelligent, and may be socially awkward, while a geek is usually someone who has odd tastes or hobbies which do not fall under the popular norm. They can also be socially inept.

I remember there was some sort of Vin diagram that outlined all these terms. :hmmm:

couldnt agree more, i am not ashamed to call myself a geek because i have a social life aswell as a huge passion for video games and other stuff. a nerd is someone that finds it hard to balance a social life and a gaming life, and perhaps finds his WOW avatar more attractive than women in general (NCIS LA quote ftw)

see that proves i am a geek quoting sentences from TV.

also a geek such as myself has an above avergae knowledge of games, but a nerd such as someone i used to associate myself with, spends his day downloading games for his flashed xbox, upgrading his PC and spending every waking minute of his life on a computer, i havent seen him outside in 4 years now :hmmm:

Hmmm, I don't know. To me a geek is usually someone kinda dorky and into things out of the norm. Not sure, though.

I'd have to say a geek is somewhere between a nerd and a dork. So, why not add the word "dork" to this conversation?

I just like to tell people, and this is based off of my experience with nerds and geeks throughout school, that nerds THINK they know what they are talking about while geeks KNOW what they are talking about. It's probably not be accurate though. Regardless, I actually kinda like that differentiation!

I've heard people use both terms to imply the same, so some people use them as interchangeable words.

I personally have not given much thought for the difference, but the posts above me make some sort of sense. That said, if someone was to swap the words around and then say the same thing then that would also make sense.

I really don't know which category I would fall under in Addle's diagram.
