Game of The Year 2009 FFF edition

Hey Folks,

I thought it would be a good idea, since most gaming magazines have them as well as forum-esc websites have them to come up with ONE single game in which you could name for any platform in which you would call game of the year.

Now I know this may be hard for you, but I am actually very interested in what you decide. Only Console games if you will though. (also elaborate if you will)

Now for my pick, I have played quite a bit of games in the year of 2009. I am going to have to say though... an easy pick would be for me..

Assassins Creed 2

Why? Well I'll tell you why. They stepped up their game when coming out with Ezio in this. I mean Desmond is cool and all but it explains how he becomes an assassin now.. and makes me really look forward to the next one. I won't go in depth with the story, because I want you to enjoy it.. but there is one HECK of a twist at the end =). I love it, right up my theological alley!

A very hard decision for me to make as I felt that 2009 was a very good year for gaming. The standards were raised quite a bit in many ways, and a lot of games that will be favourites for quite some time have came out this year.

However I guess I'll have to go with Uncharted 2 overall.

I hadn't played it until a few weeks ago but I think that takes the top spot for me. Just like the first game, the story was great, the characters (the new ones are ace additions to the cast too) music and general atmosphere.

The graphics had improved significantly from the first game and all of the places you visit (which is a lot more diverse this time round) are stunning to look at.

There is a large attention to detail in this game too. I couldn't help notice random monkeys in the wild while trekking through the jungles of Borneo. And I couldn't resist pressing the action button on a yak in a tibetan mountain village, which saw Drake pat it and make comments to it. It's been thought out quite well.

The gameplay is great too, and some nice additions.. Being able to use shields is neat, and also the improved combat has helped the game flow a lot. The action scenes are great too, and there are quite a lot of sudden changes with lots of action.

Then there is online... I haven't played it much yet, but what I've played of it is amazing. Co-op is really fun and really does require team work in order to survive. Running off alone will surely mean a gameover for the entire party. Competitive mode is fun also, but quite hard unless you are used to the game. While not the best game for online (Red Faction Guerrilla probably takes that for me), it is great to have all the climbing features, interesting game modes and scenery from the game online with other players.

Overall I think

Good choice and thread. My choice is going for ... drumroll ...

Dragon Age Origins:

Baby I have been waiting for a game like this for sooooooooo damn long. Im a lover of fantasy genre and I love my RPGs. So this was a match made in heaven for me. The character creation is what also did it for me. And the fact that there are 6 different openings you can chose from and create your own unique world. I dont like how people compare it to Oblivion, the world that never ends. DAO focuses IMO more on the story and development of your character and the relationships in your party then exploration.

Damn fine game. Plus Im an Alistair fangirl XD

Star Ocean: The Last Hope would be my choice. Absolutely epic soundtrack, almost flawless battle system (soon to be corrected with the addition of a targeting system in the PS3 version), a solid story and cast, and it was fairly long and challenging. I still can't get all the character battle trophies...not having to choose who you had in your party like in the previous SO games was awesome as well.

I bought a 360 primarily for this game, and it didn't disappoint. Not perfect, but easily my all-time favourite game~<3

I'm throwing my vote in for Prototype. I loved the freedom it gave you to play around in the city with your powers and upgrades. It wasn't exactly a new concept - it was basically just another sandbox game, but I enjoyed this one so much more than any other. Games like GTA get boring I think, because there's never anything new. Prototype didn't have a new approach to gameplay, so it relied heavily on its concept, which is what sold it for me.

I don't know if I can make a good decision, seeing as the I didn't buy that many games this year (and I forgot the ones I played earlier this, not a good sign for those games :lew:).

My main ones would be Assassin's Creed 2 and Modern Warfare 2 though.

I thought Assassin's Creed 2 was a huge improvement from the last game. It was good to see the developers listening to the problems that players had with the first one. The gameplay was really fun (even though it was GTAesque with similar mission types) and I found the story interesting. Like Shu said, the theological kind of story is really awesome and I like the whole intertwining themes and... well you'll find out. :gasp: I thought you could have been outside the Animus a bit more though. :hmmm:
There was lots to do and the game felt quite fresh. There's supposed to be some DLC coming out as well, to fill in the missing memory sequences.

My vote would have to go to MW2 though. More than ever (thanks to the games being more involved online with multiplayers and DLC) I think people want more out of their games and the whole package needs to be taken into account.
MW2 offers that. A short but explosive and action packed campaign just scratches the surface of the game's content. I mean, you have the spec ops mode to complete on your own or with a friend. It's damn hard and it'll take ages to finish. And then there's the online multiplayer which literally adds months of gameplay. The prestige mode for example, I asked some random guy online how long it took him to get the the 10th prestige and he said 23 days of gameplay. :ffs: (in game time, not real days)

So yeah, even though MW2 was more expensive, you'll go so much out of it. And it's dead fun stabbing people in the back. :rage: (pun intended)

I completely agree. I was almost stunned by how much I enjoyed AC2. It's the best looking game that I can remember of 2009, to recreate 3/4 cities so well is fantastic. The gameplay was fun and original, and the story as Shu said was compelling. My only criticism of it is that it's a very short game. Besides that though, I couldn't really fault it at all.

Uncharted 2 for me, it was brilliant.

It was nice to see everything from Uncharted taken and improved upon which shows the development of Uncharted from game to game, hopefully they'll do the same for Uncharted 3. The storyline was brilliant as were the characters, and as in Uncharted there was still some witty dialogue to make you attached to the characters. Graphics are probably the best I've seen so far, everything was pretty much perfect. Even the online which was the first time Uncharted had featured it. I'd possibly comment on the length but it was never meant to be a long game, more a movie played out as a game. Everything else made up for that anyway. Awesome game.

Console games only? I was going to say Dissidia: Final Fantasy. :P

Well, I don't have to think long for what my favourite console game of the year is: Tekken 6. That game has such a large and awesome roster of characters, the graphics are fantastic, some pretty cool music in it, gameplay is excellent with good controls, character move pools and the fighting itself it very smooth, beautifully animated.

And some may say that the Scenario Campaign mode may seem unnecessary, and tacked on, seeing as I read such in a magazine, but I think it was actually quite good, sure as heck beats Soul Calibur, imo. xD Found it to be entertaining, just too bad that the two main characters speak in a language I don't understand, I just have to do a lot of subtitle reading. >.>

Not like I am not used to that though, I usually have the sound down to nothing when I am playing an Xbox 360 or PS3 game, because I can only play them in the morning before the others have gotten up, then my father is always watching stuff on the TV. =P

If Tekken 6 doesn't count because it is multi-platform, and one of those systems is the PSP, which is a handheld, then I guess I would say Dragon Age: Origins...but before I get to describing why for DA: O, since this post is already quite long, does Tekken 6 count? <.<

Compared to 2008 this has been a pretty mediocre year for gaming, but I suppose Uncharted 2 tops my list. It feels like an interactive Indiana Jones movie, and the characters and gameplay really raise the bar for single player console games. Definitely a keeper.

I agree. It has to be Assassin's Creed II. That's the best game of 2009. It's graphics and storyline are insane. Ezio is a total bad-ass. And the storyline is incredible. I feel like I'm watching a movie when I play this game. It's voice acting is believable, the script is lively and lets you experience the feelings of watching an epic movie--which is hard to find in games--.

The game play is mind-blowing. And the interactive world allows you to feel like you really are an assassin from the renaissance era. The amount of detail they put into this game almost makes it hard to put a definite line between what's real and what's not.

And it's almost freaking how much everything in the game goes so perfectly with historical facts in the real world. It's gotta be the best end-of-the-world-in-2012 theory so far.

You can't put into words how perfect this game is. It's something you really have to experience to believe.

In a matter of fact, people who DON'T know this is the best game of 09 are either in denial or just haven't played the game and so they don't know any better.
