From 6 to 10 you have some games that most people agree that are quite good, I don't like 7 myself, and therefore it is not a good game, fact. However I understand that some people think it is good, so I have included it amongst the good games.
I've not played finaru fantariji 1 or 3 or 4 or 5, but I have played Finaru Fantariji 2 and it is not very good. With the exception of 4, no one really thinks any of those games are good, but you'd probably be more likely to meet a paedophile than a fan of any of those games.
Finaru Fantaru 10-2, 12, 13, 13-2, 14, Dissisisisisisisisidia, disisssisidia part 2 and any other spin-off you care to name are all shit.

So if the list of games that are generally considered good is, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, and Tactics, that's 7 good games, and most people will dislike a couple of those games. Whereas the list of bad games is 1, 2, 3, 5, 10-2, 11, 12, 13, 13-2, 14, dissidia, dissidia-2, tactics-2 which is 13 and I'm sure there's many terrible games I've missed.
Therefore Finaru Fantariji is not very good.

When I think about it, I only really like FF 7, 9 and 12... I used to like 10 but after trying to replay it again not long ago I decided it was fucking shite.

So I guess Final Fantasy to me is pretty bad. I don't really like the series as a whole rather than just liking a couple of individual titles.

I think most people here like to pretend 1 - 5 (sometimes 6) don't exist, if you ask people they'll usually say they've only played from 7 onwards anyway.

Final Fantasy 1- I don't like. The random encounters and lack of plot and character development is just not enough to make it a solid game.

Final Fantasy 2- 3 They're alright, wouldn't call them wonderful though.

Final Fantasy 4- 10 Great solid games. The Golden era imo.

Final Fantasy 11- 14 complete shite.
:hmph:

FF7 spin-offs complete shite again. Epsically Crisis Core, which is overrated complete shite imo.

Dissidia. It's alright. I hate it for what did to Cloud, Bartz and Terra though.

Final Fantasy XIII-2 Nice improvement from the complete shite era.

imo FF4- FF10 is the best era and I love them to death and would marry them like the poll said. After FF10 Final Fantasy not so good, however XIII-2 Final Fantasy is getting good again.
:mokken:

Final Fantasy is either good or shite depending on the time and decade, and your opinions ie- some like FF7 some don't, same with FF12 and etc.

I personally like FFIII. I Hate FFIV,FFVII and am partial to XII.

I love X,XIII,FFIV:AY and FFVI. I'm partial to IX.

You hate IV but love IV: After Years? How does that even work

i like 4,6,9,10,12, and tactics.

7 and 3 were solid

13,5, and 1 were decent.

i dont like 2,8,11, and 14

You hate IV but love IV: After Years? How does that even work

^ This.

After Years has the same world as FF4, same characters, same battle system expect for that annoying moon thing and repeats of bosses and villains.
:brow:

Why don't like something that is familiar to something that you do like ?? 8(

Ah, right. So apparently the number of not-so-good games outweigh the "good" games. Perhaps you're right. Perhaps there are only a few Final Fantasy games that really stand out in your opinion while the others are largely very forgettable. Perhaps the Final Fantasy franchise to you isn't as good as it was touted to be back in the day. It's certainly the case for me now. Very rarely would you catch me (re)playing a Final Fantasy title nowadays and I've been more excited for local council elections than I have been in a new Final Fantasy game in the last couple of years.

If I have to arbitrarily categorise the games into lists of likes and dislikes:

Awesome - FF6, FF9
Good - FF4, FF7, FF12
Meh - FF8, FF10, FF10-2
Bleh - Crisis Core, FF13, Revenant Wings
Zzzzzzzz - FF1, 2, 3, 5
What the fudge is this? - FF11, FF14
Not played, but probably not great - Dissidia and Dissidia 012, Crystal Chronicles,
Not played, but probably great - Tactics

Yes, though I generally think FF4-FF10 has been the better generation of the franchise, FF10 is pretty meh, and I rank FF12 higher. Take that, society!

You don't like your "MMO ripoffs", you would probably also hate the vast Xenoblade Chronicles, perhaps the best JRPG in a decade. Far from a simple ripoff, FF12 has actually been in my eyes a very progressive game, laying key foundations while at the same time eliminating an archaic JRPG feature (random battles). Sure, it didn't get it all right, but at least it made an attempt to evolve. FF10 and FF13 on the other hand, feel extremely restrictive, and I like big explorable places.

Make me sit through every Final Fantasy game again however, and I am almost certain that I would grow less fond of them. As much as I do theoretically love FF6, and how many fond memories the PS1 FF games should offer to me, they still play like an archaic game, and I've little stomach for the old, traditional turn-based combat of yesteryear. It doesn't do it for me anymore. At this point, I think I will also start losing interest in the Dragon Quest games if they continually stay in this conservative 1980s-1990s state of RPG combat.

I personally feel that the Final Fantasy series IS good, despite a small collection of games which have been mediocre, and a couple of games which have been a disaster. The FF series contains around 20 games. Some of these are a little like experiments as the FF team have tried to appeal to a wider audience and/or have tried to keep the series fresh.

I'm sure you will find a fan for each FF game. Some will feel nostalgic for I, II or III because they were where the FF series started. I myself quite like II because it was my first FF on the handheld, the story was decent, and I enjoyed seeing what the FF series had developed from.

When I think of each game, I try to rate it in context. I, II and III were less story based and had simpler battle systems, but the series hadn't taken off then. They no doubt had a smaller team, a smaler audience and set themselves smaller goals. They had fewer resources and people expected less.

Games like VI, VII, VIII, IX and X were all great leaps for the franchise. They tried to introduce new elements each time and most were successful. Furthermore, technology was becoming more advanced, which allowed them to experiment more. One can't deny that they have utilised the available programs well!

XII and XIII were also leaps and experiments, particularly with the battle system. I personally enjoyed the battle systems in both, but fans do debate their quality, so they were less successful. This doesn't mean the series is 'not very good,' however. To me, it means the series has entered a new era. Fans of the older games may choose to embrace the changes, but a number will move on as the games cease to appeal to them. Whether or not this new era will attract new fans is up for debate, but mainstream gamers these days (in the West) seem to prefer shooters with a simpler story (or no story), which means it's less likely... This isn't the fault of the FF series. If the games became shooters, I'd lose all respect for the current FF team. :gasp:

Since FF games have appealed to me again and again because of their story, I suppose it is important to consider whether or not the quality of the stories is still the same. FFVI - X were certainly the golden era, but I still feel XII and XIII/XIII-2 had intriguing stories which were well presented. Certainly, the story in XIII is fairly short and very focussed, but I did enjoy it and the mythology does intrigue me. I also like to view XIII and XIII-2 as two parts of a whole, which extends the story somewhat. XIII-2 itself was fantastic - in terms of gameplay, exploration, design, story and characters.

I really like Fleur's method of organisation, so I'm gonna use that. ;)

Awesome: VIII, X, XIII-2
Good: II, IV, VI, VII, IX, XII, XIII, Dissidia
Meh: I
Bleh: X-2
Zzzzzz: Crystal Chronicles...
What the fudge is this? Tactics Advance
Not played but probably not great: XI, XIV (also what the fudge?! MMOs!?!)
Not played but probably great: III, V

i agree very much with hal. i only really like 6 - 9. i enjoyed 10 for the most part, but got sick of it by the end because it was too repetitive and lost all challenge later in the game. 4 and 5 were a massive waste of my time, much like 12 and all of the spin offs that i've played.
so i would say that there are really only 4 good games out of about 20 in the whole series. therefore not very good at all.

(only including I-XIV, and -2 sequels)
Awesome: VII, VIII, IX
Great: VI, X, XIII-2
Good: XII
Decent: III, X-2, XIII
Meh: I, II
Not played but probably not great: XI, XIV
Not played but probably great: IV, V

It's all opinions though. Fainaru Fantaji may not be very good to YOU, but it's decent to ME.

I think the problem That people have with Final Fantasy is that it's too far out their, minus direct sequels and prequels, their are very few similar things about each game. Leveling up tends to be different all the time, battle systems changing slowly over time, characters, worlds, plots etc. So if for an example you loved FFVII, you want every FF game you play to be just like VII, because (for the most part) if you see a "sequel" to a game, you assume it will be very similar (dragon age, call of duty, mass effect, dragon quest, etc.) sure changes do occur, but it has a similar feel for the most part. Final Fantasy each one goes out in its own direction so very few games will feel the same.. sure you have "summons" "chocobos" "moogles" etc. but in the end thats all you can really say is eactly the same, (even though even those change from Final Fantasy to Final Fantasy.) So saying that the series overall is bad I can't say, because I can't count the series as a whole, since everything gets changed from game to game. Looking at each individual game... I say overall (if you play them thinking about the era they were made) I say most of the games were great for the time.

Final Fantasy I+ II + III were made for NES most RPG's in this time if you think about it, were basic story lines and basic graphics, etc. RPG's were really just beginning to forum with the NES. So these three games are in the birth of the RPGing video game industry, if you think like that, these games took ideas out there and formed their own identity, and were great games at the time.

IV, V, VI For the SNES I say this is probably "the bang" for the RPG era, more rpgs are coming out, RPGS are being more popular, They are being more made around the world and not sticking in Japan (like most rpgs were, and a bunch still are.) A lot of peoples first rpg's were on this console, a good chunk of peoples first Final Fantasy was on this console (since before this the only one to be released outside of Japan was the first Final Fantasy.) So looking at the evolution of RPG's at this era, I say these games were great for their generation as well. Storyline's were being well developed for the time, characters were really beginning to have depth to them, characters were having emotions, villains were being well made...

VII, VIII, IX, Tactics - Which most people probably see as the golden era of rpg's, We really start getting into more depth with storylines, Graphics began to come more realistic, Began to get FMV's. and Characters really began to become a real focus for the story's. And Square jumped ships to Sony with Cd's. This generation Square got to test how far they could push graphics, game play, and everything else. This is where I think Final Fantasy began to become a real test dummy for how they would make other games (star ocean, Front Mission, etc.) Looking at the times, these games pushed RPG's to the next level, If this was good or bad can be argued, the most popular RPG is on this console, and what some people argue is the worst system is also on here (FFVIII GF system. Although I enjoyed it, it was something new and intersting, and gave you something more than just a basic level up system.)

X XI XII- The Highlight of RPGS, RPGS were beginning to span out from here, JRPGS were not the only rpgs anymore, MMORPGS started to really become big in this generation, and people wanted more than the same system over and over again, on top of this, Graphics took a step up, voice acting became really big in video games. So Square tried to evolve with the time, made FFX a classic JRPG with voice acting, XI became there MMORPG, and XII took a new approach to RPG's, leaving behind the random battle's and bringing monsters on the map for you to fight. This also saw the first Direct sequel to a Final Fantasy Game... So each game evolved, tried something new... I mean I never was a fan of MMORPG's but with how big WoW was and still is can you blame Square for trying to get into the mix? I can't, it was a good strategy to try.

XIII, XIV, XIII-2: PS3/360 generation, Western RPGs are becoming really big around the world, JRPGs not so much, and Online gaming is at an all time high demand... so we get the second MMORPG from final fantasy (which takes a bomb, but again can't blame them for wanting to make a second MMO) Western RPG's are more action pack so XIII tries to get rid of the typical Random battle and menu feel, and tries to make their game more action pack, and more of a fast-paste feel to it. Now XIII probably is the least liked Final Fantasy out their (except for the MMO ones) in the main series at least... But I can't blame them for trying to move away from the past and keep up with the times and try new things.

So overall with each generation I think each game was great for its time. I mean I wouldn't expect someone that is 10 to 14 right now to play Final Fantasy I or II and think that it's a great new game, because it's not... It's a classic game.. and well it has the classic feel to it... So how do I rate these games? Idk, I mean it's easy to say that one game is good and one game isn't right now, because games have evolved from Nes generation. But I won't because I liked each of these Final Fantasy's when I first played them (except III but I played it on the DS and not when it was first released, so I can't make a real opinion on it.) Sure I don't play VI or IV like I use to (which were my first FF games) Use to play them over and over when I was younger right before each FF came out.. but now, I don't, times change, games evolve, old games become "boring" sometimes, and thats a fact I just learn to accept... sure I will probalby pick it up again sometime and beat it for "the good old times" but it will never have the same feel as when I first played it no matters how many times they remake it, or change the graphics, or whatever else they feel like adding to it.

I still like the series, but SE latest releases have been pretty lackluster compared to the past. Idk why Crisis Core gets so much hate, it was really good to me and I loved the story and gameplay. ):

Probably the only FF titles I didn't like at all was FFII, FFXIII, FFXIII-2, and FFXII. I didn't cont the MMOs since I barely played them at all. So for me my list would look like this:

God Tier

FFVII, FFXI, FFT, Crisis Core

Great Tier

FFVI, FFIV, FFV, Crystal Chronicles FFX-2

Good Tier

FFVIII, FFIII, FFI, FFTA, FFTA, FFTA-2, FFX

MMO Tier

FFXI, FFXIV, FFXII

Bad Tier

Dirge of Cerberus, Before Crisis, Mystic Quest

Not an RPG Jpop oh shit what are you doing tier

FFXIII, FFXIII-2

I hated FFI, well, it just bored me more than anything, and the ending was bollocks

Ive never made it past half an hour in FFII. I couldnt bare it :rage:

I quite enjoyed III. I have the DS version, its fun enough. Liked the job system too

FFIV I thought was really good, played through it a couple of times, Rosa aside, I like the characters. The PS/DS version are bloody hard as well. Its probably the only game of the seies thats given me a constant challenge, I like the story too

I hated FFV. The job system was abysmal. There wasnt muc I can say I liked about this game

VI is awesome, i just wish it wasnt painfully slow to play

VII, Im an unashamed fangirl
I really enjoyed Crisis Core as well. Save for a couple of plot related issues. I know they needed to pad the game out, but Genesis and Angeal were just so unecessary, well, any one that affected the plot in a signicicant way really. It just seemed to take a little away from the original. But over all, I liked it.

Dirge was ok, it was a bit too fiddly for a FPS though, Square should stick to what they know. The story was a bit bobbins... i cant actually recal the story tbh

VIII, IX and X are in the same boat as VII

I quite enjoyed FFX-2. It was good fun, the playability was good, the story lacked somehwat, but i enjoyed it all the same

XII - Hated my first run, my second I completely changed my opinion. I still find the bulk of the story shit though.
Revenant wings was alot more fun than i was expecting it to be as well, once id gotten used to the battle system. Quite liked the story too

XIII was ok, I liked the story, but there just wasnt enough to do, and I didnt like the lack of towns either

Im enjoyed XIII- 2 so far, but im not far enough into it to judge

I hate Tactics

theres about 4 or 5 i think are great up there, not really arsed either way about the vast majority, and one or 2 I hate

Hmm...it's hard to say because I haven't played them all. I've played VII to XIII not including the XI and including X-2.

I liked VII,
Loved VIII, IX, X and X-2,
Liked XII,
Despised XIII.

As for spin-off's I've only played DOC which I liked.

So overall I liked pretty much everything I've played, I love some and I don't like aspects of others, but baring XIII I do like the series as a whole.

Xx..xX

You guys ask why?

I had the complete collection. was bored as all hell.

I feel TAY fleshed out some of my most hated characters.( cecil,Rosa) and added onto my favourites(Edward,Golbez,Rydia,Palom,Porom) and introduced some new ones. (Leonora,Luca,Calca,Brina,Harley) Added a bigger element of challenge and was generally an enjoyable experiance.

So there. question answered.

I really like Fleur's method of organisation, so I'm gonna use that. ;)

This ! Hope you don't mind Fleur ! :)

Awesome: IX, IV, VI, VIII
Good: V, X, VII, X-2, XIII-2, II, III
Meh: IV After Years
Bleh: DOC, Crisis Core, XIII
Zzzzzz: XII, Tactics, I
What the fudge is this? Mystic Quest
Not played but probably not great: XIV, XI
Not played but probably great: Crystal Chronicles
