Ive noticed how crucial it is in most final fantasy stories that you and your crew end up going to prison. I dont think I can remember any In which you didnt end up getting locked up somewhere. I played 4 a while ago and I forgot if you do or not but anyway here are some examples.

FFVII
FFVIII
FFIX
FFX
FFXII
FFXIII

I dont know it seems that there is always a point in these storied where the characters get crusified to the public and have to redeem themselves or fight through it too decide their own right from wrong.

I personally like that this happens because its a huge step in a story for most of the characters and it help them truely decide that they are in the right and not anyone else will stand in their way.

I personally do think its funny that there always seems to be some kind of clever way out though. ^^ I mean In 7 you only escape because sephiroth tears up the place. And than you get sent back to the desert prison under the golden saucer and have to race chocobo to get free. I think that a nice change of pace would be too not let them get out...and sentance them to death...and than escape before the execution...and if you fail than game over. I mean who builds these crappy jails? lol

My favorite Prison excape would have too be number XII though. I like the fist fighting and the representation of the dungeon. Also I liked the route you had to take to get out of there.

Whats your opnions on the whole prison concept. And which prison situation do you like the best?

I like the idea of this thread Lancer~!

Jail ia a very common occurrence in real life so it makes sense that it would represented in video games a fair bit, imitating society is what video games do best, they draw there inspiration from reality and good or bad.

Yeah my Favorite Jail and subseuent escape scene/s were/was/is/are the time you had to escape from Bevelle and the Via Purifico,it was fun getting in and fun getting out.

FFXII...........nah Nothing good about that game.

Now that you mention it, that's a cool pattern!

But, they are to me, frustrating and scary moments. I hated the post-escape part of FFXII's prison. Barheim passage is creepy and unwelcoming. Oh and in FFIX, Kuja imprisoned all the characters and ordered them around in Desert Palace. I think there is some prison scene in Alexandria too. I don't have any favourites because I always hate prison escape parts of a game. The part that I like is when they are finally free from the dungeons. But they are, as you say, important plot devices.

Hahaha! Yeah i remember when the Undead version of Evrae. i freaked out thinking i had to endure more poison breaths, then accidentally threw my last Phoenix Down at him then shit myself when he died.

Although, the way the maesters thought the party would die in there with monsters so damned weak is laughable, lol. (nice way to get yer Aeons overdrive gauge full though XD)

As for the topic, I loved the VIII prison, Climb all the way up, then all the way down, then up again just to go back down lol. the prison itself was ingenious though, the cells all being high in the air so that no one could escape without being axed by monsters!

And i don't think there is a prison in IV or VI....well Kefka gets thrown in prison for a little while but that's bout it.

The fact that the characters often end up in prison is reflective of the reoccurring element in FF games in which small groups stand up to powerful authority figures who have the power to throw said people in prison i.e Shinra and the Yevon church. While I generally enjoy these kinds of storylines, I suppose it would be nice if SE tried something new.

Edit: Ninja'd....three times.

I can't really think of my favorite occurrence.. the only one which I can really remember well enough would be FFVIII's so Imma go with that :monster:

Pretty much in all RPG's you need to escape from the enemy at some point.

Just like most action thriller movies and books.

Hey never thoight about this xD

In FFXIII there´s a sort of prison too.
After Vanille and Sazh fought in chapter 9? and then they were taken away by Jill to some room and broke out xD
I wonder if XV will have a prison as well :P

I liked the X one. That you were divided into two groups, 1 in the water, 1 in the maze where you could find items into hidden passages, nice.

FFXII isn't too memorable for me, VII isn't either.
FFVIII was okay, but took quite long actually.

I know in FVI Kefka was in prison but was the main cast?

I don't remember Kefka being in prison, unless it was something which was mentioned in his origins. I've not played it in years though.

Celes was bound in a basement, guarded by two imperial guards. I'm not sure if there were any other instances in this game. I think there may have been something else with Locke, but I may just be imagining it.

As for the main topic at hand... It is a common theme in fiction, particularly fantasy, to view the story from the eyes of the rebels, and to fight against and eventually crush authority. In order to do this the characters in the game tend to find themselves on the wrong side of the law, and hence the prison scenes.

Of course (as the player) we play from the point of view of the heroes, and so we don't see them as doing anything wrong, and when the villains lock the heroes up it is merely because the villains are evil and irrational, whereas really (with regards to normal guards and such, rather than the main villains) they may just be doing their jobs in maintaining an order which, while it may not be perfect or right, is still order nonetheless.

It's when you see the main characters locked up that you realise that there are very real consequences for what the heroes are doing if they were to fail. It also tries to put the idea out there that sometimes law isn't right, and common sense and personal morals and beliefs should be followed (to a reasonable extent!) above following a code laid out by people who don't even give a damn about you.

What is my favourite prison? Most definitely FFVII's Corel Prison. The deserted Old town of Corel becoming a dumping ground for prisoners with no means of escape other than to have to race their way to victory in chocobo races is quite a nice concept. I also love the Barret / Dyne storyline, so this prison is the best one for me.

The Desert Palace in FFIX is a very close second. I just loved the design of the prison itself.

I love the prison escapes. It adds the trapped element into Final Fantasy and you have to find a way out. Without it, I think that Final Fantasy would be missing something.

FFIX had the best prison escape in my opinion. You also had the minigame where Cid has to get the key with that frog protecting it :D

FFIV didn't have the party get imprisoned, but Rosa was captured by Golbez and tied up underneath a huge axe. It also had the mages from Mysidia imprisoned in Baron.

I'm not a fan of VIII's prison, only because of the fact that it is one of those up and down repeatedly type of things.

Cid was the frog. The key was guarded by a caged Hedgehog Pie

No prisons in the first game but there was one in II. The one the Princess needs saving on the Juggernaught. III had that magic tree thing, where the party had to sneak out the cell and go beat the boss. And V when Bartz n' co got captured by Faris on the boat.

Gestahl fakes it. He wants to convince the Returners that he's "turned good" and put Kefka in jail to achieve it, though its not very long.

If you search out the castle when you arrive and have to convince the soldiers to change, head to the jail room, you can see him in jail. :P

And off course in Karnak.

I always love jail breaks.:P

It seems like these sequences are usualy on auto pilot,though-not much challenge-but it's quite a thrill to be on the run.

That's one of the few things I liked about FFXIII,actualy-how you were on the run in Cocoon.
