FFIX: 2 Player Function

well me being as strategizing as i am, and my sister being as make-them-as-stronag-as-possible as she is, we decided to team up and create an ultimate team, and together we were nearly unstopable. In one go we beat both Hades and Oxma...ONE TRY lol, and the final boss sequence was so simplefor us...see we both were quite experienced in this game...

I never knew you could do that, i'm actually surprised...but since nobody else i know plays Final Fantasy IX i guess i will never get the chance to try it out anyway.

Wow that's crazy. I never knew something like that existed. It's too bad I really don't have any friends that would get into a game like this. If I was still young than I know people that would like to play it, but I'm getting old and none of my friends like this kind of stuff really. Too bad for them, because I'll be playing FF games and going strong till the day I die.

I knew this feature existed but I had little reason to use it.

I think I tried it once with a friend and that was all... It a little bit fun, but it meant one of us having to sit most of the time watching the other player go through the story.

I think where it works best is in boss battles, or parts of the game where there are lots of battles in a row like towards the end. Then you can work together a bit and have a bit of a co-op session...

However it is easier to just do it all alone by yourself, but I think it's a nice little feature they decided to add.

I might just have to try this out. I remember vaguely hearing about it, but never gave it much thought...

Mod edit: Please add a little more to your posts, or they will be counted as spam and deleted =)

That is wild! I never knew about that!! Omg now I need to play IX again XDDD i'll get keke to play with me. lol. That's so awesome x]

So what happens when there's 3?? Do you have to select the characters again??

And its only in battle, yes?? So 1P still gets to move around and whatnot... mkay I get it xD.

I once played two player with my friend also. He found it hilarious to keep on killing me with or using all my valubable items against normal monsters! :gonk:

We played one player after that.

However it would have been useful for some of the boses, say Ozma, as he was super quick and it you can somtimes panic a bit. Well I do.

I only found out about this recently and hopefully one will do a run through with my mate.
It would be cool if you could link up through a psn by playing it on a PSP (when it is actually released that is).

I think that this feature completely depends on who you play with. I have tried it with several people and the outcome is varied.

1. I would recommend NOT using this feature on your first playthrough or your partners first playthrough.

  • Story purposes - People read at different speeds and player 1 might be reading too fast and pass up some dialogue before player 2 finishes. It is fine if you both have played through the game before and you miss a bit of dialogue every once and while. But for first timers, it could be kind of annoying to miss snippets of story due to this issue.
  • Knowledge of the game and battle system - If you and your partner have both previously beaten the game, you'll be on the same page with the battle system. At least you can both hop in and enjoy the game without having to teach the other player how to play.
2. Make sure that you both have similar play styles and personalities.
  • They have to enjoy RPGs
  • This works out great if you are both RPG completionist freaks. Someone who will have the patience of skipping their turn / defending while you spend 20 minutes trying to get Zidane to steal a rare item.
  • If you can both joke around, discuss the story, and discuss how you want to build your characters it will make for a more enjoyable experience.
For instance, 5 or 6 years ago I played this with a good friend of mine. We were both RPG fans and completionists. We steam rolled through this game, had fun, and were able to joke around and discuss the game. Playing this game together with some beer and junk food provided some very good times.

I recently started re-playing FF9 in the last week or so. I tried to introduce my girlfriend to her first Final Fantasy by breaking the ice with this 2 player feature. This is an example of how this feature is a complete annoyance and hindrance.

I'm having to basically teach her the battle system etc from the ground up. Half of the time she can't tell when its her turn and sits there for 5-10 seconds, it gets annoying telling her "its your turn".

In Conclusion: Having a like minded friend play this with you can be an extremely entertaining and worthwhile.

I found it out recently when I was playing FF9 and my sister was watching because apparently she had "nothing better to do". She started messing around with one of the controllers and somehow killed Zidane. :P She then preceded to laugh histericly saying she switched on 2P mode to kill me.
To bad none of my friends are into FF, or we'd play it all the time together.

I knew it existed but never used it. Nobody I know likes final fantasy. :(

Heh, one of my friends and I tried this, needless to say we had some fun.

I would have liked to see this in XII or even XIII, two human players in the same battle would make some of the more difficult fights easier.

It makes a little more sense to have two players in those two games, as in XIII, you could only control one character at a time, while both on the world map and in battle they directed themselves (having a human player play MED while I was COM would have made the world of difference in some battles), as the AI simply didn't know how to play MED right half the time.

I never even knew that the two player function was a possiblity in this game.

I may try and convince Steve to play with me one time. It looks like it could be fun and he needs to start understanding Final Fantasy so that I can have someone to relate to at home about the game. XD

Thanks for the info!

I'm still buggering my Mom about this. She does not want to play video games at all, but I'll get her eventually. I know how to make her break. It'll take some time though. We're working on over a year now.

Anyway, I think this feature is awesome. I'm gonna try it eventually.
