This thread is about your all time favorite old school games from any of the old school consoles such as Nintendo NES, Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Gameboy, etc. What are your favorite old school games?

My personal favorite old school games are Donkey Kong Country, Mega Man X, Super Metroid, Mortal Kombat 3, Killer Instinct, Spawn and Zelda Link to the Past for the Super Nintendo. As for the Gameboy I loved playing Pacman and Tetris. I enjoy playing all of those games very much, especially Super Metroid and Mortal Kombat 3.

Hmmm...to name but a few:

Sonic the Hedgehog (Mega Drive) - well, I grew up playing Sonic the Hedgehog...back in the days of Sega vs. Nintendo, I was firmly on Sega's side. I have so many fond memories of the game that started it all...as well as several very painful memories of Labyrinth Zone...which I could clear when I was seven years old, but can't clear now...hrmn...

Pokemon Red (Gameboy) - My first Pokemon game, back when the Pokemon craze was just a few whispers here and there...the anime had just started airing on SMTV in the morning (back when Saturday morning TV was actually worth watching) and I spent my pocket money on this...the start of a lifelong craze. XD

Zelda: Link's Awakening (Gameboy) - My first Zelda game...I wasn't overkeen on this at first. I borrowed it from a friend, and it was far too difficult for me...I couldn't get through the forest. Still, after a couple of years I figured out what I was meant to do, and I loved it from then on.

Super Metroid is the only reason anyone needs to own a SNES - my goal is to one day beat it in under 2 hours. Was one of the first games I got on Wii VC. Also great on the SNES was Gradius III, super double dragon, and legend of the mystical ninja.

On the NES it'd have to be Paperboy.

Heh, I thought there was a thread with this already but I see it is in the NES section soooo I'll post a few!

Shining Force (Sega Genesis) - Excellent game on the genesis, I played it for days in fact in order get all of my characters promoted and such and use the new abilities. The game was freakin confusing at times, but I loved it.

Techmo Super Bowl (NES) - I can't explain to you how much I played this as a kid. When I saw Madden graphics at first I still even played this game. Even if there were only two buttons (A and B).

Toe Jam and Earl (Sega Genesis) - I had the rocket launcher and at this point it was an amazing.. game. They always made me laugh too.

Earth Worm Gym (Sega Genesis) - Another hilarious game, but generally because of the main character. It was challenging but not that bad.. I loved the heck out of it.

Sonic the Hedgehog was a fav of my when I was a child. I still play them on my XBox 360. Mario was coolio, but Sonic was the top game. PTetris is another coolio game, specially when it was on the old Gameboy. Pokemon is still a series I love to play, but I started playing them when I was in my early teens.

Command and Conquer- Tiberium Dawn and Red Alert 1&2 were both classics for me. These developers had a true passion for gaming, and the music is still epic even by today's standards.

The SNES is the only old console I have ever had because my family were fans of Nintendo.

Secret of Mana- I have it again on my Wii now. Back when I first played this, I never played anything like it before. The RPG qualities were completely new to me and it began my love of the genre. It remains one of my favourite Squaresoft games today.

Street Fighter 2- I distinctly remember playing against my dad on this game. He would always win because I was much younger then, but the game still holds a happy place in my memory as being a source of short, fun sessions with my dad.

Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past- This is second only to Ocarina of Time in my opinion. I found it rather challenging as did my brother and I remember beating the game with his help on some of the bosses. I still play it today and I love the cute 2D sprite graphics.

Super Mario World- This is one game every SNES owner should have owned. The typical Mario conventions are here, and I love how accessible it is. I didn't get too far into the game, but I love the music that goes with the game. And it has Yoshi :jess:

Sheesh how could I forget that fantastic game! I had the advanced version or was it Super Street Fighter 2? I can't remember but I know I bought an arcade stick just for this game, and let me tell you when my mom cancer I had to stay with her in Dallas, this was a man's best friend!! Oh the memories.

One I'll add that was amazing is a joint package, both on the Genesis if I recall.. I think one might have been on PSX.

Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct - These two games were my all time favorite fighting games because of how smooth the combat was. I think I played these two for 2 years each.. until of course the other MK's came out.

Mortal Kombat: It was an epic game back in the day. Spamming Lui Kang's fireball attack got my lotsa wins :D

Super Mario World: As Ms. Swift said, that was the must own game for Snes'ers. I remember those days where Yoshi was new to me and I adored him :jess:

Contra/Super C- Two NES classics that I never get tired of. The games are very simplistic yet pure fun. Plus the music is very catchy and the Spread gun is one of the most epic weapons ever.

Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego- Yes, I went there. I absolutely loved playing this game as a kid (even in monochrome on our Apple IIe). It made you feel like a real detective searching for clues and trying to track the criminals. It was also a learning experience considering some of the clues they gave were very vague (he left on a boat flying a red, white and green flag). We used to keep an word almanac by the computer just for this game. xD

Quest for Glory/King's Quest/Leisure Suit Larry- Classic Sierra adventure games. Quest for Glory is probably my all time favorite game series. I loved all of the games and replay them at least once a year. King's Quest and LSL are also among my favorite adventure games. Sierra's tongue-in-cheek humor throughout their games made for a high replay value.

I'll probably expand on this later since the list is likely to get very long. I love old school games. xD

The Legend of Zelda (NES)

I played this game way late. But I was about 8 I think. I refused to stop playing it until I finished the game. When I thought I was finally done, I got hit by the second quest which I have never finished. But it really is a great game!

The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the past (SNES)

Well, it's a classic. The game that basically set the standard for every game that followed it. I remember I played this game through so many times. My parents finally got sick of seeing it.

Shadow Gate (Macintosh)

Well, a black and white point and click game and the first one I remember playing. Something about a 9 inch screen and a small little speaker with the annoying little game sounds. I remember finishing it and I still go back to play it every now and then.

DOOM (Macintosh)

This game used to scare me when I was little. I used to sit on my dads lap and he would walk around and let me shoot at the monsters. The Playstation version was even scarier with the creepier sounds and dynamic lighting.

Resident Evil 2 (Playstation)

First RE game I played. It scared the crap out of me for sure. Later I played 3 & 0 and I remember playing the first one for a little too.

Tomb Raider (Playstation)

First great adventure game I remember playing. I always used my shotgun ammo too fast and jumping off the cliffs the wrong way. Broken neck. Not fun.

Castlevania (NES)

I remember playing this game at my cousins house. After the first boss I always died from those flying heads well trying to jump on those platforms.

I don't think I should add more to the list... its getting too long! =O

I recently replayed Chrono Trigger for like the 10th time lol
only this time it was on my DS =3

aside from that I sometimes play some more Sonic, Megaman X.... meh I dunno....too many to list ^^'

Sonic & Knuckles (Genesis) was a great game, because you got to play as Knuckles. And Knuckles is the badass of the series.

Turtles in Time (SNES) was probably my favorite game on the SNES, even though it's also probably the shortest in length. Great fun with co-op though.

Pokemon Yellow was my first game for my Game Boy, and it was my addiction. I was like 3, so I basically got to the first gym and gave up without saving, because I didn't know how to save. To be honest though, that gym is difficult to this day. Screw you Brock.

For NES, the really old school, I had a ton of fun playing Super Mario Bros., that's really what got me into video games, if I remember correctly...I was only 2 years old or there abouts (no older) when I started playing video games.

Of course at that time my brain still had to develop...for a while I just walked into the Goomba at the start, then after I figured out about jumping to get over it, then came a gap that would lead to a lost life if fallen into, and for a while I just walked mindlessly off into that area for a while too...

After a while I got the hang of everything and got past enemies, and gaps, sometimes having to deal with both at the same time. :P

A few of the other NES greats, imo, were Demon Sword and the first couple of Double Dragon games in particular. You, the viewers of this thread, have probably heard of Double Dragon, but possibly not Demon Sword...

Any of you that never played this game really missed out, it was loads of fun, slashing your foes, and shooting some projectile thing at them (which changes if you get your Power very high, then again if it is at it's max), and there is a few other two or three other special abilities you could execute if you used keys you've picked up to acquire these for beating the mini boss you face.

This post is already awfully long, I'd like to just list more games now for other systems, but I think it would become unbearable for readers, tbh. :wacky: So yeah, SNES is up next, I'll post some of my favourite SNES games and a bit about 'em pretty soon.

Now to bring this message to an end. :seph:

Super Mario World, Sonic and Sonic 2, Donkey Kong Country. I wish thepower pack for my SNES wasnt knackered -__- Oh and Ecco the Dolphin, not that I was any good at it mind, mother was better at it than me ¬_¬

Ilove just having the laid back gaming days when I can just fire up one of thoise games though and I can just mooch through without having too put mnuch thought into it

Secret of Mana- First game that ever made me cry
The end with the girl and Dyluck always gets me

Final Fantasy IV- One of my favorite games of all time. I still love the story and the characters.

Chrono Trigger- My favorite game of all time. I played through it many times and have gotten several different endings. It also gives me a nice feeling of nostalgia.

Donkey Kong Country- Well I just love this game XD it did get very hard in parts.

Legend of Zelda for NES and A Link to the Past- My favorite Zelda games adn they also give me a feeling of nostalgia. And I love the Zelda main theme!

Mario 1, 2, 3 and for the SNES. Gotta love Mario lol. I sit back and play these games when I'm bored.

Castlevania- never beaten it but the first level of the first game brings back wonderful and funny memories.

Aladdin- (For Sega and I think SNES) Wow a video game based off a movie that doesn't suck! lol. This game is way to fun.

Little Mermaid for the NES- First game I ever owned and Little Mermaid is my favorite Disney Movie!

Command and Conquer Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert- You haven't lived until you've played the originals.

Glider Pro, Sim Ant, Oregon Trail, Number Crunchers- These classic Mac games dominated my life as a kid.

Pokemon Red/Blue- Still one of the best handheld games ever made. It's hard not to get all teary eyed when hearing the Pallet Town theme again.

One post focusing on some Super Nintendo Entertainment System (SNES) action comin' right up! :monster:

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars goes down as one of the best classics for the SNES, it is the closest thing to a Mario-style Final Fantasy game as you are going to get, and it had some funny moments in it. :awesome:

Had some pretty cool music in it too, and you have the rare opportunity to control Bowser in this game! You can have him in your party to fight in battles after you get to a certain point of the game (namely Booster's Tower).

Super Mario All-Stars also did a very nice job of compiling a few Super Mario Bros. classic games into one, with some enhanced graphics, which was definitely nice, even though the originals do have a much more so retro, old school feel. :P

Super Mario World is another great old game, and it posed plenty enough of a challenge, especially those special stages, which is a considerable amount of fun. :D

Also like some of the music in it too, some good Mario game music. ;]

Next up will be Sega Genesis, so stay tuned. =P

Here is another list of the other old school games that I liked and I enjoyed playing.

Pokemon Red and Pokemon Silver- This are the only two Pokemon games that I bought from the series. It had a unique battle system, great sound effects and cool graphic.

Marvel vs Capcom 2- This is one of my favorite fighting games of all times. It has a various selection of well known characters from Marvel and Capcom fighting on a 3 on 3 battle. I like the battle system they used for this game. It makes the game challenging and exciting at the same time. This is one of the best old school fighting game that I've played so far.
