Lately, I have been addicted to stereograms. Anyone has heard of it before? Well it's basically a picture with lots of random pattern in it. But if you look it at a certain way, a 3-D image will pop out. It's really amazing how our eyes work. It took me hours to be 'enlightened' and gain the ability to see the hidden 3D image though.

One example:

if viewed correctly, the image in the link above will display a 3D shark.

Now before you accuse me of losing my mind or trying to waste your time, I am NOT. It is for real :)

Here's a tutorial from youtube how to see stereograms:

I believe different people learn to view stereograms differently. The way I see it is, while looking at the image, I looked down on my nose but not letting the image escape my vision. Then after focusing on my nose, I will slowly look back at the image, and voila! The 3D image appears (most of the time).

Good luck for first-timers!

I've known about these things since primary school and not once in my life have I ever been able to get them to work. I tried the one you posted but I started getting dizzy focusing on a computer screen.

I like those spiral things that are on posters though. The ones which look like they are swirling. Not really the same thing but still an optical illusion.

I have a whole book of those things that I've had since pre-school. :wacky: Unfortunately, not until a few years ago, I wasn't able to see the illusion within the pictures cause I didn't know how to look at it. Well a few years ago from now, I actually do what we're supposed to do, and I thought I was tripping out when the wanted result was seen. They can be quite entertaining once you finally know how to see them .

These are some of the most frustrating things in existence for me. I've had quite a few stereogram eye illusion books since I was a small child. To this day I still can not see any of the things we're meant to be seeing.

After watching that video and staring for ages at the different patterns I've found that I still can't see anything. When it looks as if my eyes are finally going crazy, and things might be forming, I become aware of this, my concentration goes, and before I know it I'm looking away. If that doesn't happen then my eyes water and I need to blink, and lose all of my concentration.

It's interesting that it tells you to treat it as if you were looking out through a window. Unfortunately (having convinced myself that the stereograms are all now windows) I still can't see anything beyond them.

The idea behind them is all very interesting, but I've never got my eyes to see them.

The best way to do is...

Well, I found out the easy way.

Try to be cross eyed just a little and focus on the center part of the image. If you're doing it right, a hollow silhouette should be visible.

Like this one.

Try to cross eye and focus on the center.

You should see a Happy Face.

i have never worked these out before in my entire life. Even with people standing next to me and coaching me on how to look at them properly I've just never done it hahaha. Instructions are of no use to me ;_;

It's kind of hard to explain how it works, but I've always been able to see them :hmmm: The first ones I ever tried would have two dots at the bottom of the page underneath the picture, and if you could get your eyes to cross enough for the dots to match up, then that was the amount you needed to cross your eyes to get the picture to work. Once you start crossing your eyes to look at these pictures, I find in my case anyway that there's a certain point where the image "latches into place," and it's actually a bit difficult to un-cross your eyes from it sometimes :hmmm: So if you can get it to that point, I think that should mean that it's working. But anyway for anyone who has trouble seeing them, finding one with dots underneath to guide you would be a good way to start.

animated stereograms FTW!

I feel deprived because I have only known about stereograms like a few days ago :neomon:

Anyways for those who can't see, try my method (first post). It can be frustrating at first. I almost wanted to break the monitor when I was trying to figure it out.

Hmmm ive tried these things but they dont work for me I always just end up seeing the design.
Although I do fairly well in seeing images in patterns and such like in carpets and various thing but I dont think its quite the same thing

The only thing I managed to do do was how they said to distance your index fingers from your face and then you'd end up seeing three of them.

I got that far and then when I tried to use those stereograms I failed miserably, more than likely due to the fact that I was impatient. XD

It's cool how those images can somehow have another image hidden beneath them though.

I love these things. I see them all the time on Facebook and think they're pretty cool. Lately they've been getting repetitive though. They need to make more! Anyway, um yeah these things are cool. I dig them.

The first time i looked at this thread back a year ago i couldnt see anything in the first image posted but now i can and i must say its pretty interesting once you see it. :O

I just went slightly cockeyed and moved my headback and forth. When it got to the right placement it jumps out at you, very cool.

Once you see it your eyes feel right funny afterwards. Text on screen appears to be in 3D aswell. Maybe not so good for your eyes

I have always been really bad at these.

I still can't see the shark. And it's been five minutes :jimberry:!

And I couldn't see the snowman :sad3:

Is the shark's tail tilted to the right side? :hmmm:
