The forums will be going down for a few hours late next Monday or Tuesday evening. The site will be switching servers. The new server is a minor upgrade over the current one, though the difference will likely not be noticeable.

There will likely be some hiccups early on after the transfer is complete, as the new server has different configuration files which will probably need to be tweaked.

How many "few hours" are we talking about? Are you gonna delete something like the SB or the RPG or you'll keep everything the same?

Thx in advance :)

No, they don't do that, silly. :wacky:

The new server is probably to make the site work faster or better. Besides, if it's not working for a while, go do something else. I know I will be if the site's being slow for me, anyway.

That sounds good, I have had a five second lag whenever I click on, well...anything. It even lags a bit when I'm typing sometimes. I know its not my computer and my internet is pretty fast. So if that's improved a little bit, I'm good with waiting a whole day. Well, alright. Half a day.

Thanks for letting us know, LG. I'm hoping this really does help out with the lag we've been experiencing a lot as of late. Especially in posting and the SB. The lag doesn't usually bother or affect me to a great extent, but it does happen on occasion. Hopefully this will make it easier for those members who encounter it frequently.

I really like this idea! I think we'll see a huge difference in all honesty. I mean, when the site runs nicely, it runs pretty quick, but I think it will be highly noticeable as it will prevent frequent lag spikes from occuring. I'm willing to see FFF go down for a few hours to sort out a potential issue.

Thanks for the support LG! :ryan:

The transfer should take a few hours, and also the the nameservers have to propogate - that too would take a few hours, and you'd see the site on the old server until then.

Nothing will be removed.

I don't know if this will improve any lag, as I said the upgrade is fairly minor and mostly for things that will not affect performance, e.g. hard disk space.

Thanks for the Update, bud.

If you are upping the HD space, it might actually speed things up depending on the usage. It has been proven using more than 90% of resources on a server HD bogs down the memory allocation as well as the speed of the processor. (hince another reason for constant defragmenting) So if this increases the space.. we might see small speed changes. Might be nothing to write home about, but we can only hope!

Thank God others are getting lag. I thought it was my laptop or internet connection. But coolio, thanks for the heads up :)

Dude man my computer is crap and have half descent internet and I don't lag lake that.

For the most part a server move won't directly affect the parts of the site due to sql and ftp databases.

I have ordinary DSL. I was on in the middle of the night, so maybe the company I use for the internet has a little lag or goes more slowly in the middle of the night. Thinking not many are on or whatever. The connection fluxes every once in awhile. It's a little better today, nothing's immediate though, that's for sure.

Depending on how much hard disc space gets cleaned up, there might be small boosts in speed like what Shu said. And like SapphireStar, I'm glad it isn't just me.

Good luck with the process then Lord Golbez, and thank you for letting us in advance.

As for the business with the current lags, I don't suffer from it on an extreme regular basis, and only occasionally. It could be something to do with the current server, the web traffic or my broadband speed I don't know, but I welcome this transfer especially if it will rectify the problems of other users.

A few hours shouldn't be any problem whatsoever. I'm glad no one here finds that a problem. Normally my friends will moan senseless about that sort of thing.

Oh I hope this will eliminate all the lag on this site whatsoever because it pisses me off. So downtime next wekk huh? Ok so I guess that would be good. Server change better be better than the current server. If it still lags on the new server I dont know what the hell it is xD

Thanks LG. To be honest I was half-expecting (and hoping) that you were going to upgrade the site when I saw that vB message in the ACP last week. If this fixes the lag that some members are experiencing, even better. If not...well all in all an upgrade is still an upgrade, even if it's minor. Thanks for letting us know in advanced.

The move has been completed. PM me if you experience any strange issues. Thank you.

Thanks a ton for the move, LG. :awesome:

I've noticed a definite improvement with me in the shoutbox.

It used to freeze up when I entered it through school, but it doesn't now. :jess:
