District 9

[Mitsuki]

Anyone seen this film yet? I just finished watching it a couple hours ago and surprisingly I liked it. There was really not too much information about the movie so at first I wasn't too excited about it, but I have to say that it's very interesting and action-packed. I'm sure most of the guys would love it - not sure if the female audiences would appreciate it as much but I liked it.

The first half-hour of the movie was pretty boring though and the camera perspective type kinda irritated me. In fact, two of my friends walked out because they couldn't handle the camera panning around so much and it was giving them a headache. I admit, I almost fell asleep and was itching to walk out as well, but it got to be interesting eventually. You just have to really give it a chance. Overall it's a very good movie and the storyline is great. I'd rate it as 8/10. It would have been a 10 otherwise had it not been for that first half-hour beginning.

I've been kind of on the fence about this one since I started seeing the previews. On the one hand, it looks like it could be interesting; but on the other, a lot of alien movies end up being generic crap. I do like a lot of action and sci-fi movies though as long as the story is good. I rarely go to the movies these days but I may just go see this one.

I've seen commercials for this movie and it looked pretty slick though I'm not a big scifi fan, it seemed like my kinda movie though I hadn't heard much about it except for the commercial, and until now. I think I'm gonna check this movie out and will prolly like it, I hope, lol.

Seen the trailer about 2 months ago and now there are adverts everywhere for it, mainly on phoneboxes. Im on the fence with it, Im not sure how I feel about it.

I wanted to see it this weekend, but unfortunately I can't due to mass amounts of Uni shit. I'm going to see it next weekend though. Although I really don't know too much about it, I am really looking forward to seeing it. The trailers look interesting and the majority of people I've talked to about it have said it was pretty good. So yeah I can hardly wait.

Hmm, I was wondering if my family and I should see this. I think I'll ask if we can go see it now.

I think I might go see it, but I was put off when I found out Peter Jackson was directing it. All of his films are way too long making the film build up slow and tedious. Looks interesting though so I'll give it a chance, but I'll need to bring supplies to last me a week most likely

Hmm, coincidentally I saw the TV trailer for this not so long ago. Looks quite interesting, perhaps this is one of the new scifi films that I must see this year.

I just saw it a few hours ago and it didn't really blow me away. A lot of people seemed to love it but it didn't really do anything for me. The story line was ok but the progression seemed to simple.

I have to give props to the setting though, I think the South African setting was great and the idea of placing aliens in a refugee camp was quite interesting. I think this movie had the right direction as far as themes and ideas go. But I just think it was executed poorly.

With that said though, I certainly didn't hate the movie. It just didn't do anything for me. I think this movie is a "love it or hate it" kinda movie (yet oddly enough I don't fall into either category )

I thoroughly enjoyed this movie. The CGI was honestly breathtaking. I was surprised that the aliens were CGI, I would have thought that there was some animatronics but I guess not. Overall this movie had a GREAT theme, a really good plot, great acting and voice work, etc. It had a decent balance of everything, and was both being surprisingly simple and well written. My only problem was that it WAS very simple and short, but then again it's the intricate and complicated storylines that really immerse me into a setting. But that's just me. At the same time, simple and short did this movie pretty good, and I felt it worked well together.

^ So SaShman, I'm curious to know how you would have liked it to be executed?

It's hard to say, but I guess I would've liked the progression of the plot to have been spaced out better. I mean the film spent a good while 'setting the mood' so to speak. It gave me a good impression of the kind of world this movie was set in, which is probably why I loved the setting so much. But once the actual story was set in motion, it seemed to progress way to quickly.

For example, when they set out to retrieve the fuel from MNU it seemed like they were able to break in and collect it in like 5 minutes. And another thing which kinda bothered me a little was how easily they escaped from MNU; "Let's make a bomb, oh would you look at that, a carpark and whadoya know, the keys are already in the car." that all just seemed like a dodgy plot device to me (but I'm really just being pedantic now).

I was so confused when I first started watching it and almost walked out thinking that it was going to be documentary like the whole way through.

The only documentaries I like are ones that are real.

Anyway, then it started to turn movie like and I got really into it.

The ending was so sad.

I hated that main guy at the start (forgets name) but then felt sorry for him later on. =( He really did the right thing for those Prawns. >.<

 

[Jack's Smirking Revenge]

District 9 was one of my favourite films of last year. I loved the documentary aspect they took with the earlier stages of the film - it was a nice change from the norm and it helped draw me in. I thought Sharlto Copley gave a brilliant performance as Wikus too.

Agreed. I liked how to film used actors that you don't usually see. It was pretty refreshing.

Also, the documentary style was awesome. The interviews at the beginning we're very creepy and set the mood well. As the film went on though, it lost the documentary style and just became a sci-fi action movie. I wish they had been more consistent.

Still a solid film IMO.

It would have been very difficult to have kept the documentary theme throughout the film though, because the audience needed to see more of Wikus' story than interviews with floating heads. You could argue that they could have used some kind of security camera thing to show where he went, but the film wouldn't have been as dynamic then.

I watched this movie last weekend and I think it is quite good movie. I suspected the entire film to be in the documentary type style, but was quite suprised by the amount of action that was in the second half of the movie. I also liked that the location wasn't some American city for a change, but Johannesburg (although they could have out in some more distinct South African stuff, I haven't heard much Afrikaans for example..).
