does anyone ever actually use the cover materia other than to master it for the sake of mastering all materia?i know i don't,i jsut don't see the point of having one character take the fall for another.
 
It's handy for building up Limit Breaks, give someone a Hyper and cover Materia and you will be knocking out limit breaks like they are going out of fashion. Great for getting to that evel 4 limit break as soon as possible

Other than that, I don't really use it
 
I used to use it. I always placed it on Cloud as he usually had the most health. It helped me survive more, as fewer of my party were being wiped out.
Everyone else will pound away at the enemies alongside Cloud, and Cloud as my powerhouse would take most hits for them. It worked well.
I don't think it affected my limit breaks that much, as my other characters still got them.
 
I normally use it to get the limit breaks but thats about it. the first cover materia i find i always equip to Cloud, give him the hyper status effect and then have him use his limit break every time he is able, once that is done i do it with Red XIII and then with Tifa so that all of my characters can learn their level 4 limit breaks as soon as i pick them up.
 
Outside of using it to build up limit breaks so that I could get to the limit breaks further (since some are based on use) I didn't use cover back when I played FFVII. Really it was not a skill worth using.

However if they had an adaptation like FFIX does ('Cover Girls') I might have used it since Aeris or Tifa were always my healers, thus protecting them would have been useful. Don't need the healers dying afterall...
 
I used it quite often, especially when I was stuck with only Cloud and Aeris.

Also, as others have mentioned: Limit breaks.
 
I always use cover, il give it to Cloud so that his limit gauge fills up letting me get his higher limit breaks sooner. One of my favourite materia.
 
I use especially when I have the counter materia attached to the character. It gives them a good chance to attack the enemy back plus you can do the same effect with Magic Counter materia to cast spells and summons after being attacked. I also like putting Hyper on all my characters with the cover materia so I can use their limit breaks more for the fun of it too.
 
Useful as I always had Tifa or Cloud as my attackers with no magic on them whatsoever to decrease their HP and defence, so they would cover the overloaded magic people.

Also, as the other 31049 people have mentioned: Hyper + Cover = Easier Limit Break count.
 
Yah I only se it for making characters build up their Limit Gage faster. I have used it once n a while for making higher level characters [with more HP] take the hit for weaker ones with low HP. I guess it is pretty useful giving you use it in the right time and place.

i used it in the beginning of the game when you first got it for the hp boost...cause you got it ages before you could get an hp up also just as everyone else has said here to help speed up the limit breaks
 
I didn't find much use for it, mainly cause I didn't use Aeris much. She was the only one who couldn't really hold her own.
 
When learning Limit Breaks and leveling up I would place it on whoever I was focusing on to take the hits so their Limit Break would juice up faster.

Also, when I had one character using the HP<---->MP materia on, I would have one, if not 2 characters using the Cover materia to prevent my lowest HP'd character from getting KO'd instantly after one hit.
 
I rarely use cover in any FF games really. It has only ever came in handy for me in FFIV. It never occurred to me that it could be used to help learn limit breaks faster, I might give it a shot if I play FFVII again.

Same here, but it is good for that though. I have pretty much everyone's Level 4 Limit Break now I think...including Vincent's. :D
 
yeah i'm playinbg f7 right now and i jsut put it on cloud(right when your on your way to wall market and i got my limit breaks much faster and i have cross slash now.
 
I always use cover it gets me limit breaks faster and it is useful against enemies.

another hint

If you arn't using cure all junction its good for a single person to take most of the damage since you can only cure one at a time.
