90's/80's Music (past) VS "Nowadays" Music-Which do you like?

Now,I may be saying this from a Rap/Hip-hop point of view but I can add a lot of pop and R&B which people listen to nowadays...........

I've noticed a lot of difference between the lyrics and music videos from the 80's/90's to what we see and hear nowadays..........

Music nowadays seem to be obsessed about the following things: girls,cars,sex,money,dancing etc etc etc.............

The main genres being R&B,Pop and Rap..........

If I flick through the music channels on my TV today there is no doubt I will see someone dancing half-naked with their private bits in my face.............

people like Lady Gaga,Soulja Boy,Lil wayne,Justin Bieber etc etc.......

Lady Gaga dancing half-naked video wise........don't know about her lyrics though
Soulja boy and Lil wayne:rapping about "hoes",money,cars etc lyrically and video wise
Justin Bieber:he just wants a girl lyrically and video wise


I hope you get what I'm saying..............I mean let's take a look at the music stars of the 90's

Micheal Jackson:Yes,he may dance but not half-naked..........as for his lyrics in his songs he talks about his life,about changing the world etc etc. For example in songs like Man in the mirror,They don't really care about us,Heal the world etc.

Tupac Shakur: (I bet you knew that was coming)............This may be a contrversial one to add here but if you hear his songs before the beef with biggie smalls you can see he is not a "thug" and like micheal jackson wanted to change the world.After all he was a public activist same as Martin-luther king,Benezir Bhutto etc etc. But his songs like Keep ya head up,Changes,Life goes on are forgotten when people speak of him.

John Lennon:I don't know much about him but heard he was very influential as well as him being an anti-war activist!

And also on the music side of things.........songs nowadays seem to be more fast in other words club music..........as well as songs which just repeat a set of words which is unlike the music of the past.

Opinions on what you like/think about this..........
 
I absolutely voted for the old school. Though there are still plenty of unknown bands who sing about various issues, most of the popular music now consists of romantic relationship songs, and there is only so much variety in that before you go "oh no, not this again" :ffs: Bands like Tears for Fears in the 80s and Rage Against The Machine in the 90s were especially good at singing about important issues, and there were many, many others. It was much more enlightening, not to mention the music was just better IMO, more chord variations and more intuitive lyrics even within romantic songs.
 
Old School all the way. I grew up with these songs, and there are a few I can't just pass a few days without listening. Music nowadays revolves around sex too much and it kinda makes music lose its meaning. All of these songs seem to be clones with different tunes, clothes, and choreography.

Old School all the way, regardless if I am called, or not, "ancient". :hmph:
 
Depends, really. You make good points on a lot of the newer bands having an incredibly dim and carnal view of life, though there are still a few bands out there (Weezer, Offspring) that got their start in the 90's and haven't changed too much in terms of lyrical style, even in the present day. Some modern music has declined, but hardly all of it.


All the same, I do find myself wondering where that spark went in a lot of the "classic rock" bands. Take Alice Cooper for example; he had the whole shock rock/generational commentary going during Billion Dollar Babies and his earlier stuff. Compare that to his last album (Along Came a Spider) which is more a story in and of itself.

Ditto Ozzy, though more in content than meaning. He's released some catchy stuff, but "Scream" and "Life Won't Wait" don't hold a candle to the likes of "Crazy Train" or "S.I.N."
 
Definitely old school music. Very much like Julius, I also grew up listening to songs from the 80s and 90s, and although I know a lot of people may view them as a bit of dull due to the lovey dovey lyrics, I can really appreciate their music than the mainstream music these days. To name a few classic ones, Journey, Michael Learns to Rock, Air Supply, Survivor, Chicago, Bon Jovi, The Jets, Richard Marx, Cyndi Lauper, Stevie B. , Bryan Adams, REO Speedwagon, Aerosmith, etc.

My vote goes to old school music. I say old school music because I think it was a bit more memorable like, Depeche Mode, The Smiths, The Cure, Tears For Fears, Metallica, Michael Jackson, Rockwell etc...
Even music film scores for movies back in the day had more memorable themes then today like Giorgio Moroder's "Chase Theme" from Midnight Express and the theme for Scarface. Brad Fidel's Terminator Theme. Harold Faltermeyer's Axel Foley Theme from Beverly Hills Cop and the soundtrack for Schwarzenegger's movie The Running Man. Vangelis's soundtrack for Blade Runner. Danny Elfman's infamous Batman Theme for the 89 movie. John Carpenter's theme for the Halloween series. Probably the most famous themes would have been John Williams's Theme for Darth Vader in The Empire Strikes Back and the theme for Indiana Jones as well as Ray Parker Jr's Ghostbusters theme and Survivor's "Eye Of The Tiger" in Rocky III. I could go on all day... but I will say I do enjoy some of the old school music more then todays music. Maybe it's just me or I don't know but not a whole lot of today's music appeals to me. However I do like some of Eminem's stuff quite a bit, but at this point he's probably considered kinda old school as well seeing how he's been around since the mid 90's.
 
I prefer the new-school music.

Sure I love a lot of the old-school music but a lot of great artists are still coming out these days and I love discovering new music.

I mean I grew up in the 90's and what not but it doesn't mean I prefer that sort of music simply because of that reason. There are a lot of great artists from that time but only a few that I really appreciate and still choose to listen to, and keep on my CD's every time a create a new playlist.

I'm loving the music coming out today.<3 I feel I can relate to it a lot more than the old school stuff.
 
Old school forever. I'm 19, normally people my age would surely choose new school, but not me. I don't get why today's singers need to strip their clothes off and dance half naked. I'm not just talking about LG here. I also don't like artists who just want to get girls and all they know is to make sweet smiles, their songs ain't really good. And singers who just makes noise instead of music. Yes, there are amazing new artists who really makes sense but very few of them and some doesn't get that much attention even though they're talented. The only new singers I love is Michelle Branch (This girl is a cut above the other singers of her time. She makes great musics, but I don't see her often now :cry:), Vanessa Carlton, Avril Lavigne, Nickback, Vertical Horizon and The Corrs. Their songs are what I call music. I can't say though, that I grew up with the old songs, the only artist I listen too back when I was small is Micheal Learns to Rock and they're my favorite rock band of all time. But when I was in high school, I found the beauty of the music of the past, Like Alanis Morisette, Phil Collins, The Beatles, MJ, Abba, Chicago, Journey and many more. Personally, I think the 90's is the greatest decade of the music history.
 
That's a hard one for me. I prefer turn-of-2000 music. I guess that means I can't really vote for either category.

I'm not a huge fan of 80's music. Just 90's to present.
 
I prefer the old school (despite my age xD). Glam metals like Van Halen, The Mötley Crüe, Guns N Roses and Aerosmith are my kind of thing. Metallica during the 80's-90's was a huge hit but now, they're just.. mehhh.. Oh how I wish I was there when the rock concerts were filled with bright lights from lighters :XD:
 
Easily the newer stuff. I grew up listening to 80's 90's and even older in my dad's tuck (he still plays them) and its an anathema to me. I can't stand most of the music from those eras. I will agree that alot of the music today is shit though, especially rap and whatever that vile spew coming out of Bieber's mouth is called.

Though honestly, I havent bought a *new* CD in some time. Most of the stuff I have is late 90's to mid 00. And it's mostly alternative and various subgenres of metal.

I find more old music all of the time. There’s loads of it out there. Not all of it has to be mainstream, but there are quite a few bands and songs from the past which were popular then which not very many people play these days.

Personally I make no distinction in my music tastes. I just like what I like. On the whole though I must say that the old music would be what I listen to more, and when I listen to new music it isn’t new pop music (referring to popular music here, not various subgenres of pop such as electropop or synthpop etc, as some bands which are labelled as these most people wouldn’t have heard of, and I do like some of them) but is music which is new which many people have probably never heard of.

Music in general (or music which I consider to be good) interests me. Whether this music was composed ten years ago, in the 90s, in the 80s, in the 70s, in the 60s, in the 50s or hundreds of years ago, it wouldn’t stop me liking it if it was good.

Most of the stuff on the radio today doesn’t appeal to me. It says nothing to me about my life, and I don’t find it inspiring me at all either.

fo real,i feel ya str8 up on this one...........

maybe that wasn't the best example (even though its a good song) but still,rappers back in the days put feeling into what they rapped.As in what happens in their area,what they think,what others think/do etc.

nowadays its all bullshit............and i can clearly understand why people hate rap nowadays (so do i,but not the rap back in the days)

Fleetwood Mac and Stevie Nicks! I think that old music is better in a lot of ways. A group like that will never come again in a thousand years, and no group today can compare.


You don't hear songs like this on the radio anymore. You don't hear people who can sing live anymore. Times are changing.

Watch this performance. People aren't connected to their music this way anymore.


So the oldies are better for the most part IMO.

old-school music has had a much bigger impact on society than modern music, but i prefer the modern songs over old ones. they just sound kinda better, but aren't as important.
