Up until now, it was generally assumed that Final Fantasy X HD for the PS3 and PSP Vita would simply be an HD remastered port of the PS2 original. However, it appears that this is not so. According to PSTime, Final Fantasy X HD will not be a port, but a full remake, being made with Square Enix's Crystal Tools engine, famously used for Final Fantasy XIII, and it's upcoming sequels Final Fantasy XIII-2 and Final Fantasy Versus XIII.

Final Fantasy X HD is set to receive a complete makeover, with the game being completely built with the Crystal Tools engine, as well as its still beautiful cutscenes being presented through a "Final Fantasy XIII 'filter'", whatever that means. Blitzball will also be receiving small changes, and an as of yet unknown online functionality will be added (online Blitzball anyone?). However, purists will be happy to hear that the core gameplay of Final Fantasy X itself will receive no changes.

I find it surprising that Square Enix has taken it upon themselves to completely rebuild Final Fantasy X with a new engine titles with a new engine, considering that they have consistently denied remaking Final Fantasy VII with modern technology.

What do you think of Final Fantasy X's remake? Do you think this means that Square Enix could give us more Final Fantasy remakes with the Crystal Tools engine in the future?

That's right, caught by surprise announcement at the Tokyo Game Show to see again in our Final Fantasy X and PSVita PS3, and just give information, leaving many doubts. It was rumored that it would be an HD remaster as we have already seen in our PS3. Nothing is further from reality, to our knowledge from PSTime will be a remake using the engine of Final Fantasy XIII.

Here are some details:

Use the same engine that Final Fantasy XIII and adapted to PSVita.

All that is made from scratch with the new engine is the design of the characters, the aeons and stage elements.

The sets and scenes in HD remasters CGI will implement a "filter" FFXIII Engine.

The magic and some lighting effects are achieved with the new engine "Luminous".

The Blitzball undergo small changes.

Online options will include (not yet known details).

The release date in Japan in fiscal 2012.

That's all the details we could learn from PSTime, soon we will offer new information.

Why not priced at $60 if it has all that done to it? It would be awesome if true.

I would rather pay $60 for a game I know is worth it and will be like playing a new game again, then paying $60 for a game that gives me 8 hours of gameplay

Ill wait to see if true, but also that screen could be cleaned up by anyone. Just gotta wait for a official statement

That screenshot is probably just someone emulating the game using a PS2 emulator on their computer. They'd at least use Tidus's high quality model at all times for the PS3 version.

LOL I highly doubt this game is getting fully remade. It's just a rumor someone made up. The source the info comes from doesn't look like any newsworthy site I've seen. The bottom line is that x's graphics are being updated and the game will be available for download. If it was getting fully remade they may as well make a new FF numbered game -_-

I really did not bother even posting this news, It is most likely just something fake... or it is a rumoured remake. Now, I can not really trust this source because Square Enix already announced it themselves. Even on their website it says it is a Remaster and not a remake. A full remake would be nice, but do we have to have everything like FF XIII nowadays?

It isn't like we are talking about Final Fantasy VII here, so why is everyone so doubtful? I can say an animal called "Dhole" actually exists, but I'm just some random person, so is -that- a good source?

You just gotta look in the right direction, and have the right attitude. I don't like to consider myself naive or some such for thinking this may actually be a full remake of FFX. It broke out VA for Final Fantasy, so it was a pretty significant title in the franchise.

Just because it'll use a more advanced engine does NOT NOT NOT make it a remake. If they're calling it a remake, I expect some proper new content to it as well as this graphics upgrade. It is only a remake if it's actually remade from the ground up, i.e. something like FFIV on the DS.

Blitzball will also be receiving small changes, and an as of yet unknown online functionality will be added (online Blitzball anyone?). However, purists will be happy to hear that the core gameplay of Final Fantasy X itself will receive no changes.
THAT IS NOT ENOUGH FOR A REMAKE. Throwing an online multiplayer function at it hardly makes it a remake, it just makes it a remastered port with an online mode. New content means additional cutscenes to expand the story, more dungeons and optional bosses, and even the ability to recruit other party members either during the game or after it; things like that. It doesn't mean they have to change the gameplay at all. But justifying calling it a remake just because you've added an online mode is cheap.

I find it surprising that Square Enix has taken it upon themselves to completely rebuild Final Fantasy X with a new engine titles with a new engine, considering that they have consistently denied remaking Final Fantasy VII with modern technology.
I don't. FFVII would take a lot more effort than FFX would; they say they're completely rebuilding it, but I doubt it. All the character models and the world itself are more detailed than they are for FFVII. They can just copy what they did for FFX, for FFVII they'd actually have to put some effort into it.

What do you think of Final Fantasy X's remake? Do you think this means that Square Enix could give us more Final Fantasy remakes with the Crystal Tools engine in the future?
I know it's early days yet, but I'm afraid that just isn't good enough for it to be called a remake. If they're completely rebuilding it, then they need to add to it properly beyond the standard issue online multiplayer that is getting thrown at nearly every single video game these days, and until they release something to show they have, no matter what engine they're using, it will be nothing more than a remastered port.

As interested as I am in this and what SE could do with it, I can see this remake status they're giving it pissing me off immensely, because it's doubtful they're going to do anything to it. It's going to be like the recent remastered ports we've had on the 3DS, claiming they're remakes when in reality they've not changed even in the slightest. It's fucking frustrating. Good thing it's probably BS hype.

Either remake is fine with me. HD remastering or a full remake, I don't mind. It would be neat to see a full remake though, because some of the graphics looked really weird, like Tidus's hair, hair in general and the fact that people couldn't touch another person. lol

I only wonder why they won't do FF6 or FF5....which haven't received any type of remake yet and is still in 16/32 BIT sprites. >.>

Pffft, I laughed hard. Yeah right, Square would totally do something like that, and not just want to grab money on a lazy port. Of couuuurse.

I'm not very convinced. To rebuild character designs and all that from scratch is one thing, doing this for every scenario and cutscene in the game is another. It just sounds like too much unnecessary work and hassle when the simple job is just to upscale everything like what Team Ico and the like have done. Everything else, I'm not technical enough to comment on, such as the filter and all that, but I'm taking this rumour with a very big scoop of salt.

As far as I'm concerned, this is still a remastered title. Unless they're willing to throw out everything such as the old character designs, animations, every cutscene and all that and build them all from scratch like you would if you were remaking FFVII (and all this work may as well be done for a new game anyway), it isn't a remake.

I like the fact that it's going to be remade, and going to be using the same graphical engine as FF13, but I do not like the fact that Blitzball is going to have changes. It is perfectly fine as is, and should just receive the HD remaster like I know it should. However, as long as it's not a FFX-2 kind of change, I do not mind one bit.

Let's hope Wakka sounds...decent. :wacky:

This is such bullshit.

I'm willing to bet anyone here $50 (Tell you what, I'll just buy you the game) if this turns out to be a "remake." It may used the Crystal tools engine or whatever, but it will not be a full remake. This I know.

Some of you guys are taking it was to literally. Remake, in laymans terms, doesnt exactly mean they have to add in things. It will be a HD remake. Meaning, they are redoing the game in HD, nothing more.

well the previous poster's comments don't tell us

anything.
We don't know , like I said, if it will have any of the Inernational/Pal stuff in it plus we don't know, like listed in the faq about the differences, if it will have any of the calculation changes in it.

shrugs.

I presume there will be more info relleased about it at some point.:jon:

Ahh so much speculation/rumours

Not a chance for a complete remake why people get there hopes up I don't know. I'm all for a HD remaster whatever it may be. I'm just hoping if they do make changes to the game, they keep any reference to X-2 at it's complete minumum.
