I've been following IGN.com's updates on the 3DS conference in Japan and have come away with some news!

The first game is one we already know about. Theaterythm Final Fantasy. Looks rather interesting, but certainly not spectacular or mind-blowing.

The second game, however, is an entirely new RPG called Bravely Default Flying Fairy (hopefully the title is...temporary or mistranslated...)

Bravely Default seems to be an RPG in the same vein as The 4 Heroes of Light, which appeared on the Nintendo DS. Lucas from IGN speculates that this game could be a sequel, but that is undetermined as of right now. Regardless, all of the editors said that the game looked gorgeous, but did not go into detail.

Look for more info on Bravely Default in the coming weeks, but I just wanted to put this up and let you guys know a new RPG from Square Enix is in the works!

Just to add to this thread:

Square Enix has a new RPG in development for 3DS. Titled Bravely Default, the game promises a classic style RPG experience, while at the same time offering new features through a mysterious AR card system. The game is produced by Tomoya Asano and has characters from Akihiko Yoshida.

Square Enix will have a giant AR card in its booth at the Tokyo Game Show, allowing visitors to view life-size versions of the characters. In a video clip at Nintendo's press conference information site, Asano said the game will have a demo booth at TGS, but it's unclear if this means attendees will actually get to play the game itself or if he's referring to the AR demonstration.

I don't know what the heck AR is (augmented reality? Wot?), but ultimately it sounds like another weird gimmick thing. Anyway, I actually like this art style and a new IP is definitely something fresh that we need to see from Square Enix and Nintendo lately. One question is though, what the heck is up with that title? Who came up with that? Did someone with absolutely no grasp of English whatsoever just go through the dictionary hoping to find the most Englishy words he could come across?

I can imagine them being so stumped in coming up with a title that one of them looks at the recent state of the US economy and thinks: "Hmm, yeees. Defaulting. That is just what we need. Screw fantasies and quests. Defaulting is where it's at!", before tacking on Flying Fairy just in case it didn't sound too RPG-like enough.

Can we give up on these crappy 3DS games until you've gone and upped your main games and started releasing some solid titles, Square-Enix. Surely that's not much to ask, is it? In fairness the concept design looks pretty slick, but then again, how many times has Square-Enix designed an amazing looking game that went and bombed. The 3DS probably isn't the best handheld to start launching new IPs on just yet either considering it's massively flopped, so much so they cut the price $100 within 5 months. It may be an amazing game but likening it to The 4 Heroes of Light is never a good thing.

AR Cards are cards that you can use to make it look like the characters are in the room on the 3DS Screen

but it looks pretty good... the graphics look nice  we might see something at TGS

I thought that it looks pretty unique and neat. I wonder if people would of hated the idea of Chrono Trigger and other Square spinoffs if they came out today ?

It looks pretty adventurous, though I'll wait till what the battle system is like. A RPG with a good battle system makes it worth buying.

I am really liking the art and design of this game. The trailer music is also decent. But the name is a little...umm...weird...

Reminds me a lot of FFIX, FFIIIDS and Chaos Rings, which are the games I like. Looks quite promising to me. But I don't have a 3DS

It actually looks really nice... but the name Bravely Default Flying Fairy.... Please change it thats worse than the KH3DS or whatever the FF game is called... I mean this game still wont make me buy a 3DS but for 3DS owners It does look nice.

This looks really nice. I am glad I already have a Nintendo 3DS. I knew good titles would come eventually. The art style is really pretty. The only think that is shit about it is that is has a stupid name. I will ask the same question.. but what the fuck is Bravely default Flying Fairy? When I saw the name yesterday I literally went "Orly? they can not think of a better name than this?" I am going to get this eventually. It really looks good. Also Augmented reality means when you alter the real world around you. I have a few Ar cards that came with the 3DS. I know for a fact I can see Mario in my room if I use a certain card. Then again, he is not actually in my room.. but on the 3DS screen. It is a pretty cool thing though. I might want one for Default flying fairies here. Seriously the title is shit.

Okay, the name is a bit stupid, and I hope that's not its English name :hmmm: That makes no sense at all. Oh well. Art style looks good, and it'd probably be worth getting on the 3DS if I had one.

....yeah, they should really take the flying fairy part off. This isn't Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy’s Augmented Reality Preview Is A Movie

Square Enix will give Tokyo Game Show attendees an early look at Bravely Default: Flying Fairy. This Nintendo 3DS game is a traditional RPG with Tomoya Asano tied as a producer.

The game will use AR cards. An app available now on the Nintendo e-Shop will let users view a special movie. These AR cards will be distributed at Tokyo Game Show and will be available to download starting on September 22.

Bravely Default is slated for release next year in Japan.

See How Square Enix’s New RPG, Bravely Default, Uses Augmented Reality

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy won’t be available until 2012, but Square Enix gave Nintendo 3DS owners a look at how their traditional RPG will utilize augmented reality via a downloadable app on Japan’s eShop. Actually, that should read *will* give owners a look because they haven’t given out AR cards yet.

You can’t see it in these photos, but the stones pop out a bit.

that is pretty awesome... i want a go :wacky:

This game looks great! Hopefully they decide to call it Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light II or something when it gets released in Canada & USA.

Not bad.... but the girl..and all the singing...

Does she look like a Aerith/Tifa mix with a Celes personality? Or is it just me looking at her at first glance too much? :wacky:

It doesn't even look like it would be 4 Heroes of Light. Same art style != sequel.

I have to admit major nostalgia and flashbacks popped up upon seeing the designs ..it looks amazing.. too bad me doesnt own DS and never will.

But it looks great , now hopefully it doesnt fail ..kudos...

Damon more Tifa/Rinoa AND Garnet xD

I can't take that female character seriously. Her dress goes all the way up to just below her crotch, and the backside is open down to the top of her butt. And she's wearing thigh-high boots. Granted, plenty of female characters are super sexualized, but that dress is ridiculous. It distracts me from the rest of the game screens.

That's not to say she isn't hot. Quite the opposite. But her face shows no indication that she's conscious of her outfit, so it's like staring at an actress who isn't aware she's about to become a porn star.

That aside, this game is now on my radar, and depending on how it turns out might be the deciding factor in my buying a 3DS in the future.

Let’s See Bravely Default: Flying Fairy’s AR Application In Action

Square Enix will hand out an AR card for Bravely Default: Flying Fairy at Tokyo Game Show, which will let 3DS owners test out the game’s augmented reality features. Cards aren’t available yet, but the application is.

We downloaded it from Japan’s eShop to give you another look at Square Enix’s upcoming Nintendo 3DS RPG.

The video is in 2D, but the Bravely Default: Flying Fairy application runs in 3D. With the depth slider turned on, you can see into the busy world. Chat boxes seem to hover somewhere above the action, but they don’t leap out of the screen.

This does not need a new thread so.. double post

Bravely Default has job system, random encounters

Square Enix's Tomoya Asano talks new RPG.

After a Tokyo Game Show reveal, Inside Games followed up with Square Enix’s Tomoya Asano on Bravely Default: Flying Fairy, their new role-playing game for Nintendo 3DS.

Bravely Default has four main characters, one of which is the girl shown in this artwork. Above the girl, we see the “Flying Fairy” of the game’s subtitle.

Characters will battle using jobs and abilities, and like a “standard RPG,” battles will be a turn-based, random encounter situation.

Asano remained tight-lipped regarding story and sound staff. He would only say that they’re working with people who’ve never worked with Square before, and that they’re “interesting people.”
