For the latest public demonstration of Luminous Studio, Square Enix has gone with something a bit more eye catching that a parking garage. This is "Agni's Philosophy Final Fantasy Realtime Tech Demo," a demo which runs on the next gen Luminous engine.

Look below for full resolution screenshots.

Square Enix previously teased this demo which was produced by Visual Works, the team that's known for Square Enix's finest CG work. For details, see our Luminous coverage archive..

Japanese media outlets are promising followup reports on the tech demo and Luminous Engine later today, so we may get additional details shortly.

Access the demo's official site here to share your feedback on the demo and the technology.

The technology and implementation of it is epic~ :cookie:

Don't care much for the character designs, theme and story of it, though. :ohshit:

@LukeLC, could you please provide a link to the source of the article at the bottom of your post? Thanks

No source article; the official Final Fantasy Google+ page shared the YouTube link, which I again shared here. The way I saw it, the youtube video itself is the source material, but feel free to correct me if I'm wrong. This is hot off the presses :)

EDIT: If anybody's on Google+, the link to the post is here: https://plus.google.com/u/0/107227326378198223984/posts/TWstBzdVHho

Wow that was amazing ! It felt just like a movie at the cinema !! (y)

Simply amazing, to have all that rendered IN REAL-TIME!!!

Not sure if a lot of people realize the the amount of power needed to accomplish something like this.

Anyway, for those of you that are PC gamers, there had been rumors that the PS4 would be sporting an AMD Quadcore APU + 6000s series GPU (forgot which one)

And that the Xbox 720 would include a CPU and a Radeon 6670 GPU

Giving the PS4 a clear advantage by having a console version of crossfireX.

However,

these specs would NOT be able to pull something off similar to what we just witnessed.

No way Jose.

Blah blah blah, pretty pictures, blah. Doesn't mean a thing if it doesn't play as good as it looks and, given Square Enix's recent track record, I'll not be holding my breath. But yes, I suppose it all looked very nice, etc etc. Now if they can make a proper video game that looks like that, that would be lovely.

Tech demos aren't particularly impressive when you consider that Square Enix don't know how to make proper video games using the technology. Exciting prospects for the future for companies that do? Perhaps. But for Square Enix...

I'll check out the video when I get home, but SE will use this engine partially for Versus as well. Like the photos they compared earlier on, this is pretty realistic. Gotta admit though a full fledged game with this engine SE will not do it justice lmao.
They would focus too much on graphics and not on gameplay and story.

I think they will use it partially for now. Versus being the first.

I am agreeing with Martel on this one. While it's pretty in the graphics, I doubt we'll be seeing this be put to good use. Square has a bad habit of prolonging what we want. The rumors of Versus being ff15 is the absolute proof of this, sadly.

my jaw dropped at this, as a game designer consoles being able to get almost pre rendered graphics will be just amazing, i won't comment on how square will use it as i'm looking at this in a game designer view, and I got to say you go Square, and i'm looking forwards to seeing more from this engine :)

Hmm I just saw the video and Im not happy with the lack of details of their skins. Somehow the following two tech demo's impressed me more.

^ Why would Square-Enix Japan want plenty of facial details with pores and all that? They conform to the general aesthetic idea of having pretty boy and pretty girl characters, unless we're on about human villains. :lew:

Sooo, this is a display of real time visuals with the engine? Okay, but what is it running on? Unless the next gen consoles have beefy GTX 560+ kind of graphics cards, I highly doubt they can run this sort of beast on a relatively high graphical setting, while Square-Enix would probably spend around a whole decade just trying to push a game running on this engine out unless they learn the ways of efficiency. High-end PCs certainly, would have enough muscle. It's nice and fancy having this sort of tech demo, but can future consoles even handle what we have seen? Well, I'm eager to see but as nice as this demo looks, it's nothing really to get excited over.

At least they had the good sense not to do another FFVII tech demo again.

All of those demos were amazing, both SE and the two Ohri-Jin posted. It's truly amazing what these companies are creating for the next generation of gaming in terms of graphics. My jaw literally dropped.

Did you see the old man?

Obviously if the designers wanted to, they could have put as much skin detail on their characters as in the Samaritan demo (not sure if Luminous engine uses subsurface scattering or not though), and it was a stylistic choice to keep the skin 'perfect' on other characters. Personally, I liked how it looked in the SE demo. One thing I'm starting to learn is that just because we have the hardware power now to have hyper detailed textures doesn't mean everything needs more raw texture to it in order to look more realistic.

Anyway, for those of you that are PC gamers, there had been rumors that the PS4 would be sporting an AMD Quadcore APU + 6000s series GPU (forgot which one)

Both Microsoft and Sony have been pretty clear that they still believe their consoles can last for a 10 year lifespan; I think it's way too early to be placing specific hardware on either company's next-gen console just yet. Likely the specific CPUs and GPUs they will make use of have yet to be invented. How stupid would it be for them to release new consoles in 2016/2017 using hardware that was available in 2012? In the tech world, that's not just out of date, that's ancient.

[07/06] Yoichi Wada Discusses Square Enix's Next Generation Engine Luminous

Famitsu.com has delivered its promised interview with Yoichi Wada. The Square Enix CEO discussed the company's new Luminous Studio technology.

Famitsu began its conversation with Wada by asking about the thinking behind Luminous Studio's development. A game company must offer its developers a development environment, replied Wada, just like Da Vinci had a studio. When considering a game engine, there are two approaches -- put everything together in one engine for use across multiple games, or have a new engine for each game. Luminous Studio attempts to fall right in between these two approaches.

Square Enix's current engines include Crystal Engine, which is used in Tomb Raider, and Glacier 2, which is used in Hitman Absolution. While these engines aren't limited to just one particular type of game, they specialized. Crystal Engine is more appropriate for adventure and action games with various actions and a maps created from multiple parts. Glacier 2 is better for shooters with high degrees of freedom.

For Square Enix's Tokyo Studio, you have games like Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts. There aren't engines that are appropriate for these types of games, which is why the teams developed and reformed engines with each game. This is why Square Enix gave the go on Luminous Studio's creation, because they want something that's more general purpose but can still meet specific game characteristics. Their goal was something that can cover RPGs and more action oriented RPGs, with a target of Direct X 11 level.

(Note: Wada did not mention Square Enix's Crystal Tools/White Engine in the interview.)

Realtime image from the Luminous tech demo that Square Enix debuted yesterday.

The demo Square Enix showed yesterday to demonstrate Luminous was titled "Agni's Philosophy Final Fantasy Realtime Tech Demo." Why did they put FF in the title? It's because they want to show that Luminous Studio is an engine that can make a Final Fantasy type of game.

Famitsu asked if this means Luminous will be used to develop Square Enix brand RPGs and action RPGs. "We aren't thinking about selling the engine externally, so that's about right," replied Wada. "There's no mistake that Luminous Studio is an engine made with the view of producing RPGs like the past FF games. But not just that -- it has a broad reach, from games with high action to games without high action." Wada later added that when contracting external studios for development work, they will offer them the use of Luminous Studio.

Famitsu also asked if this means Luminous Studio will be used to make a next generation Final Fantasy, and also if players can look forward to completely new IPs from the engine. Wada didn't respond to the Final Fantasy question, but did say that Square Enix does plan on trying out new IPs. Wada wants current staff to try making new IPs, and new staff coming from the outside to also try out new IPs on Luminous Studio.

Wada noted that Luminous Studio stands apart from most engines, except for perhaps Unity Engine, in that it's being developed specifically as an engine, and not attached to or built along side a particular game. In contrast, Source Engine and Unreal Engine are developed alongside a game, he noted.

At present, there are no games using Luminous Studio as an engine. Wada personally would like to see internal use of the engine by the end of the year or early next year.

More proof that they didn't use the engine partially for Versus which he said they would.
At the end of the year use it for Versus and not for some other crap game please. Do what you promised.

That was pretty cool :hmmm: Obviously the graphics were amazing and stuff, that's pretty much all it was about haha.

It kinda felt like final fantasy, mixed with CoD, mixed with A resident evil game (those dogs reminded me of it) the Taliban guys were random hahaha

But it still looked cool

Looks good, but the cinematics are what Square are good at, so that's to be expected. Considering this is being developed into a game...I'll be on the lookout for sure.

Exactly how I felt. :wacky:

I thought I was looking at a resident evil / final fantasy game tbh. :lew: Glad I'm not the only one that noticed its similarities :lew:

Wow that was amazing ! It felt just like a movie at the cinema !! (y)
I felt the same! :ohoho:

I think this is by far the best graphics I've seen for this E3 (this and The Last of Us). They've got every detail down about the human features. The eyes are just outstanding though. They look so real it's almost sorta strange, lol. The only flaw I can spot on her that looks less real is her feather coat thing.

Still, it's amazing to look at. :ohoho:

Oh, also, with these graphics they'll be able to make pores on the skin and whatever else--they just CHOSE not to, that's all. I can guarantee you that they'll make a game with realistic details like pores and stuff, though (Deus Ex for example had "ugly" features like pores or imperfect skin). Just give them some time. ;)

Let's hope SE makes some DILFs like the one in The Last of Us! :ohoho:
