Best Final Fantasy Game?

IX definitely
while not the first FF i have played. something about the characters keeps me going back to replay it more than any of the others i really just love the ability systems, a great change from the equally awesome if not a bit more complex junction system, and i liked the return to a more fixed job type class than the ability to make any character do anything (materia and junction) anyways it is a favorite of mine i will be replaying shortly.

Oh plus where else are you going to have a no gender specified blue mage that eats everything that fights with a FORK?

Out of all of the Final Fantasy games I've played, IX, X, and XII are probably some of the best (or my personal favorites :P). They all have great stories (especially XII), and great characters to support them.

The only one I've played is IX, and that was a month ago when I downloaded it for my PS3. So worth it!

Anyway, if and when I do play another FF, I'll still say IX is my favorite. It's one of those times when I favor the first game I've played in a series. I'll probably play X next rather than VII or VIII.

P.S. Of all the games I can recall playing, IX is the only videogame to make me shed a tear. Wow o_O

Ouch, this is both an easy and difficult decision for me. Easy in that I already have my favorite Final Fantasy, and the one that I think is the best, cemented in my mind. That is Final Fantasy VI. Difficult, in that it's incredibly difficult to quantify something like "best" in the series. I mean, if we go by graphics, (which is a category that I don't really care too much about) then VI is not the best. Its graphics are simplistic and beautiful, but not as magnificent as some of the later games. Other games in the series have a far more complex storyline than VI too. Still, I absolutely love VI's story and rank it as tops in the series despite its simplicity in the face of others.

Then again, if someone rates the best as most popular, than VI would lose out there too. VII is more popular than VI, has more spin-offs and sells bigger numbers than VI does. Of course, popularity does not equal value. McDonald's Big Mac's sells far more than gourmet filet mignon, but which one is better? Now, I love VII, and definitely believe it deserves its accolades, don't get me wrong. I just don't think its popularity means it's necessarily better.

Even with those clarifications, I vote for VI, which is my favorite and the one I believe to be the best.

Why?

Here's but a few reasons. The music is godly and easily my favorite soundtrack in the whole series. Nobou Uematsu was at the top of his game here, and I can name a dozen tracks that I can listen to again and again. 'Terra', 'The Mystic Forest', 'The Empire Gestahl', 'Forever Rachel'. I'm reminiscing just thinking about the titles. I also think that 'Terra' is the best overworld in the series by far. It's just so damned infectious. VI also has two epics in 'Dancing Mad' and the famous Opera scene which is bar none my favorite "epic" song in the series. In fact, I rate the Opera music as one of the most beautiful songs in gaming history.

The characters. Other Final Fantasy suffer, in my opinion, with characters that are either uninteresting or flat out annoying. (I'm looking at you Vaan.) VI has a huge host of characters of all walks of life. You have treasure hunters (Locke), flamboyant monarchs (Edgar), haunted samurais (Cyan), berserker wild childs (Gau), half-human mystics with no identity of their own (Terra) and much, much more. This is just my opinion, but where later protagonists can become tiresome with their behavior, Terra's search for humanity and inability to love doesn't and strikes a poignant chord. Her memories were wiped clean, parents killed or trapped in a containment facility and she's the only one of her kind. A human/Esper hybrid. That's not the recipe for an easy life. Plus she has green hair, and I do love green hair so.

The characters are amazing, and each have depth to their character. They've all lost someone or something dear to them, yet soldiers on and fights for a world devastated by a madman. Edgar and Sabin lost their father, Locke lost Rachel, Cyan lost his family, Gau was abandoned by his father, Terra lost her parents and her past, Setzer lost Daryl... They're all lost souls bonded together by the cruelty of life yet they do not give up. They do not falter. There's a certain dignity to these characters, and I love them all for it.

And there's the wacky rumor that Gogo is really Adlai Stevenson. Okay, he's not, but who doesn't love Adlai Stevenson?

I like the Magicite/Esper system and the game-play is straightforward and easy to master. That's important. I also love the skill-sets in the game. Sabin's Blitzes being a personal favorite of mine. Plus, who doesn't love it when you have Sabin suplex a HadesGigas. He'll pick the giant lug up into the air and send him crashing back down to the mat... I mean the ground. It's epic I tell you, epic.

The storyline, on the surface, is rather cliche and seemingly completely inspired from Star Wars. You have an evil Empire and a renegade Rebel group fighting them. Caught in the middle of this conflict is a mystically inclined youth who eventually joins the Rebel cause. It expands from that starting point, and I absolutely love the story of this game. It's a definite turning point in the series, whereas before the games were more standard RPG's where you fight the baddie, restore the crystals/orbs and be done with it. VI is a sort of middle ground between the old school Final Fantasies and the more grandiose epics that came after. I still believe that Kefka's "win" halfway through the game, and the subsequent destruction of the world, to be a genuine shocker and one of gaming's all time great surprises. I could be wrong, but I don't believe a video game villain had actually "won" before up to that point.

When I was a kid, I remember thinking that the World of Ruin and World of Balance were two separate planets or something. I couldn't even fathom that my group of heroes would fail and Kefka would shatter the world forever. Yet, he did.

That leads me to my final reason to love Final Fantasy VI. Kefka. I love the psychotic bastard. He's The Joker of Final Fantasy, the malevolent clown with the unforgettable laugh. Where other Final Fantasy villains are brooding malcontents or big scary overlords, Kefka relishes in his evil and misdeeds. Quite frankly, he's one of the few characters in the game that's having a good time and enjoying themselves. Kill the Emperor? Shatter the continents? Torture poor Espers? Kefka will do it all with a grin on his painted face. The heroes are tortured and full of woe, while the villain is the one having a ball. It's a fun twist, in my opinion.

Unlike other baddies, Kefka actually wins and becomes a God. He rules the world for a year and we actually get to see the terrible aftermath of a villain's victory. That's one thing I love about VI. We see how evil's triumph effects the people of the world. Towns and villages are transformed or obliterated. Plants won't grow in the dead soil ,so the world's food supply will one day run out. Families are ripped apart forever by Kefka's Light of Judgment. Some people turn to fanaticism and worship their destroyer as a God, knowing nothing more but Kefka's name. We see innocent babies born into a world with no hope for a future. It's bleak, it's terrible and it's Kefka's creation. He's the ultimate nihilist, finding nothing of value in this world but hatred. Concepts like power and wealth are meaningless to him, he only wants to hate and destroy. It's pure Kefka, and Kefka is the cherry on top of the wonderful Final Fantasy VI sundae.

My personal favorite will always be IV.

It was my first Final Fantasy on my first console and I absolutely loved it. The characters were engaging and I got really attached to each one. Rydia was the one I identified most with because she faced tough circumstances when she was younger but grew out of them to become strong-willed. The graphics were pretty laughable on a SNES...but they sufficed. Random encounters in this game were the first I'd ever encountered and I will admit they made me jump the first few times :gasp: but I liked how it kept the game fresh and not boring. It was also a pretty long game..which I liked. The final boss was like amazing...which made me even more fond of the story. Love love love IV. I will never tire of it.

X from what I've played. I really enjoyed the story and, once I'd gotten to grips with the Sphere Grid, appreciated the structure of the battle system. The turn-taking provided time for thought and permitted one to develop a good strategy. :)

edit: Furthermore, I love the story and characters. I have never felt so connected to characters in a game as I do to Yuna, Tidus, Auron, Lulu, Wakka and Khimari (and Rikku to an extent, though I actually forget she's even in the game!). Their loyalty to one another felt real. Their love for one another and their passion and their comradeship had a purpose which lay in the past and the future. Their backstories were explored in depth, and their emotions seemed realistic.

This is an interesting question. I have favourites in different aspects of each game.

Gameplay - I actually liked XIII the best. It was well paced in battles, was exciting to some degree, and the constant paradigm shifts in battle was quick and involved strategy planning before hand. The set up made it more realistic though you could still figure out what was happening despite the confusing visuals during the battle.

Story - X was the most engaging for me. I didn't see the story line twists on my first play through so it kept me entertained. It was emotional to some extent and I liked the even spacing of the development of the characters.

Characters - Each game had their good characters, but the game I had the most liked was again X. None of which are my favourite of all time, however I really disliked the additional comic relief characters in the earlier ones, ie Quina, which I cannot think of one in X. Closed followed by IX though.

So all in all, X I guess. Though I do love each FF game for what is worth. :p

Final Fantasy X-2 simply because its the nex tpart of a great story like X but when it comes to storyline I think it got 1000 times better than X (which was really great) I loved the music, mini games, battle system and the many different dresspsheres they had as well.

Mostly its my favorite cause The side boss Trema goes on my record for most hardest boss for me to kill, it took me so long. Overall FFXIII is my second favorite and its really close to beating FFX-2 in my book.

Definitely FFVII. That game had amazing characters and an amazing storyline that continues to keep the fans wanting more. Hence the compilation right? Some consider the compilation a fail but I'm giving it all a 100% win. Even FFVII DOC for God's sake. The game could have been much better but I was happy just to see what my favorite characters were up to.

I couldn't choose between VIII, IX and X so I put them all. When it comes down to it I probably like VIII the best. I don't understand all the hate it gets. It's story isn't any more complicated than VII's and the characters are great. Maybe because it's a love story? But so is X? I don't think I'll ever understand...

i have played FFs from I to VIII (excluding III)
and i think VII had the best story ever! specially because of crisis core...boy o boy...the price of freedom is stiff!

i also think FFVIII is cool...but thing is ...i just don't get one part right...squall...someone so cold hearted like him (i know he had a sad past but still...) how did he and when did he fell for rinoa ? that's the only reason i can't make myself like FFVIII as much as VII...but other parts are AWESOME! specially laguna's story!

Well, it's been a while since I posted. I'll state that so far: IX, X, and VII are the best. Mainly for their stories and characters :D

Although IX and X are still superior to VII in my opinion.

There wasn't one moment when Squall fell in love with Rinoa, it took time, he slowly came to love her but he didn't want to - he wanted to be alone because he was scared of losing the people he got close to. So he was in denial about it, he pushed it away and tried to ignore it. When Rinoa was in a coma, that's when he couldn't ignore it anymore. But he fell in love throughout the game.

top 3 are VI,Tactics, and X.

VI for best characters.
Tactics for best gameplay.
X for favorite story and music.

m\it changes often but these 3 are usually my favorites, depends on what mood im in honestly.

Fave Final Fantasy Game <3

In my opinion, the best Final Fantasy was either 7 or 9! Both games had ep!c storylines and ALOT of sidequests to complete/discover. It has to be FF7, The game is just so good and addictive! I loved it but it's a pity i lost the game so i can no longer play it :((

But when Rinoa spoke about Seifer he didn't really know her yet, they'd only met a little while ago, that was still on disk one. He was thinking about his friends too, he wanted to keep them at arms length as well, but it was Rinoa's coma that made him see that even when he ignored his connecrions with people, they were still there, and it'd still hurt if he lost them, redardless of his behaviour. That's when he stopped denying his feelings and pushing everyone away.

I do agree. A lot of people overlook the reasons for his moodiness in the begining and say he goes out of character by the end and all that, but really he's just someone who was abandoned when he was young and had to learn to trust people again. I like Squall, he's one of my favourite characters.

I'm not sure if VIII is my favourite FF or if X is, sometimes I even think IX might be, I'm always a little torn between them three.
