So in the Vets Lounge thread we came across a vague discussion as to why we haven't updated. We're at vb 3.6.8 whereas most forums run at about vb 3.8 by now. It may not seem like a lot, but there's a huge world of a difference.

Updating would allow us to have access to Visitor Messages. They're basically the same as Usernotes, however they don't need to be on a separate page. They're completely viewable from your main profile and take up about half the space (which is fine because there's lots of room anyway). And let's face it, without a usernote in front of our face (since there's no notification) we don't know we've received one.

There's also User Groups, which allow people to create clubs within the forum, and they can be about anything, such as making a UK Members club. People can add pictures to the groups and hold discussions as well.

People can colour their own post bit. That teeny tiny little section on the side of your post with your stats you can alter with colour hex codes. So people could make the titles pink and the info blue. A nice difference from all the white.

People can even colour their own usernames! But... with staff the only ones for coloured usernames, best not to use that one.

What do you say staff? There's more features out there but these are the main ones I've seen utilized on a lot of forums. We're not all that terribly behind and it won't be a total loss if we don't, but I just figured it's food for thought to discuss.

I agree, always thought this forum could use some more stuff, although it is a great forum already. I really like the clubs thing, would be a nice addition.

As Mitsuki said in the other thread, we've discussed updating the forum several times, but in the end, it's up to Lord Golbez, since he owns the forum and all. I think there are complications involving the RPG and shoutbox that make updating difficult. Or something like that.

Channy that has 130 posts and joined April 2010 has access to the Veteran's Lounge? O.O

To be honest, aside from Visitor Messages, I'm fine with FFF myself. The other two vB sites I go to, their SB doesn't load properly for me, but here it does. So I don't wanna risk that xD

No, Channy's talking about in the suggestion forum. We were discussing it.

Anyway, I'd really like if the forum would update. It's never a good thing when a forum lies at once place for too long.

I know Lord Golbez said no, but is there a chance he'll reconsider? :sad3:

I'm quite happy with the forums as it is. There are no real faults or anything we are desperately lacking. We've managed fine so far, and updating isn't really essential at all.

But yeah, at the end of the day it's Lord Golbez's site, so it's up to him to make the decisions. Maybe perhaps sometime in the future we can upgrade, but at the moment, everything's fine as it is. =]

No, it was a thread made in the Feedback and Suggestions section proposing Veteran-related changes. :dave:

To be honest, the changes from updating the forum seem mostly cosmetic. It doesn't hurt to check your own profile every couple of days to see if you have a usernote, and aside from that, the colours seem just a nice addition, but hardly necessary.

There are plenty of other shoutboxes available, we don't have to stick with the one we have now, and I think Decado/Belazor has said that they have a version of the RPG that's compatible with 3.8.

I'm definitely for the upgrade. The version we're on now is starting to look horribly outdated.

I don't know about SB's not updating with a version upgrade because afaik with past forums a SB has been able to load fine given that it gets the upgrade as well.

Granted these things aren't mandatory and I nobody's demanding anything... But what if everybody, a lot of members included, could have a lengthy discussion about it? Perhaps open a poll to the public and gauge everybody's opinions on it?

Ultimately, yeah it is the Admin's final vote, but how often is he active here? Is he like a lot of other forum Admins where he just owns the place and lets the Mods/Super Mods run it? Or does he actually have a lot of say in what goes on and oversees things from time to time, instead of once a month?

Ditto.

I've yet to come across Lord Golbez. :mokken: but it's his decision in the end. Hopefully he'll see that the members would really like it.

A few things:

Lord Golbez I think is mainly worried about the effects it will have on the RPG Inferno, the Shout-box, and the skin. Each would be affected somehow and I'm not sure if it's something that he would have to put in a lot of work himself, or another way of going about it would be hiring a Technical Admin.

In the past we have had 2 known Tech Admins who I know are still in touch with FFF or at least capable of being reached. However, weather going with one from the past, or finding a new one, I have no idea how Lord Golbez would want to go about it or if he wants to at all.

I know many of us, including Staff have asked him about the upgrade multiple times, so I know he knows we're thinking and inquiring about it. As of now, it's his call. He knows we'd like it, but the timing has to come down to when he can afford to fix all the changes it will bring to many of our features.

It wouldn't kill us to have a trustworthy Tech-Administrator again. The only problem is finding one while being certain that the one we choose does has experience and is capable of doing the job. The Update will be necessary eventually in order to keep FFF in a competitive position when compared to other sites and might help us increase the overall traffic.

I also remember back in the days, that the idea was discarded because LG was taking care of all the technical stuff associated and the presence of a new Tech Admin was not really that necessary (again, it was said during times when finding one was almost NEAR impossible...).

I'm interested in being a tech admin, I was always good with computer stuff. Just need to figure out how to use all the things around here and i would be fine. I'm somewhat experienced, just never was a tech on a forum, I was on a few websites, which were my own.

My boyfriend could probably do it. But to get him into my account and actually arse him into doing something for me on a forum that doesn't benefit him in anyway.... I'd have to bribe him with some pretty good sxctiem...:tehe:

I don't have the PM anymore to quote from but I've asked him personally before and it was something about not needing to update until there's a security update including coding problems as well. Something along those lines anyway.

I don't think going to 3.8 would be a major problem. I think the problem would be if we went to VB4. Neither the RPG or the sb would work. But I believe if we stick to VB3 the RPG and sb would be fine. There might be some minor issues since Inferno products are no longer supported. But I think we could still run them.

I myself am perfectly satisfied with the site the way it is, certainly for the time being anyways, but I agree it will come to a time that we pretty much will have to update, yeah.

But as for right now, I don't see there being some huge rush on it, I've enjoyed this site the way it has been for...well, I almost said years, but it will have been two years very soon; May 30th, so it's pretty much been two good years for me. :monster:

But as Koloth says, it wouldn't be bad, just if one can be arsed with the doing the whole site upgrade thing. :P

So we have some site staff that are for it, and some that are against it. How often is the Admin around on the forums to gauge a reaction/opinion from him?

I don't think anyone is against upgrading per se, in face I think everyone wants an upgrade. But every member on staff including admins could agree, but the decision would still be 110% down to the admins.

All being said, I'll PM and direct LG towards this thread.

If you upgrade to 4.0, EVERY mod on this site will stop working- including the skin. You should be able to go to 3.8 however, without any significant problems. Having done it myself I can assure you the upgrade process is relatively simplistic. I'm not sure how LG handled the licensing when he took over the forum, so I don't know if getting the updated version will be as simple as downloading it straight from vbulletin.com. Regardless, here's how I think he should handle updating in the long run:

1. Back up the databases and download the patched version from vbulletin.com. Shut the forums off at a low traffic hour.

2. FTP the whole upload folder into the forum directory, overwriting all old files. Make sure config.php is set up correctly. Turn the boards back on when ready.

3. Upgrade the v3arcade to the latest version from the support page. If this does not work use the v3 converter to switch over to ibProArcade (a free alternative).

4. Upgrade the Inferno chatbox to the much improved vBShout version. A conversion script is available.

5. Get skinners on the website to work on a vBulletin 4.0 equivalent of the current skin. This will take a good deal of effort and access to a 4.0 board to test on, but it shouldn't be that hard for the admin.

6. Wait until the spiritual successor to RPG Inferno is released.

7. Prepare modernized versions of the arcade/display mods for the eventual mega-switch to vB 4.0. Warn members well in advance that the board will probably be shut down for an hour or two while this happens.

8. Upgrade the forums completely, bringing joy and modernization to the FFF community. :)
