BARACK OBAMA ELECTED PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES!

He is the first African-American who has ever been elected to the highest position in U.S. government.
I'm glad to have seen it. :monster:

Woo, the guy i voted for won this time. Unlike the last 2 times -__-

Lets see if he lives up to what he has been saying.

Awesome sig, David. Yep, Tielknight, same here. I am gaining some faith in the average American voter again.

Hope it was a Democratic sweep in Congress too.

He's not really African American, because that implies that his ancestors were brought to America as slaves, which is not the case.

I'm always glad when conservatives aren't voted in though:elmo:

Couldn't give a crap about his race, to be honest.

But I'm glad he won the election. Hopefully the change he promises is of the sort that improves the country.

Since I'm on the other side of the Atlantic Ocean, and generally uninformed about politics, I've missed quite a bit of the campaigns and whatnot but, based on everything I've seen and heard (including debates on television), I'm happy that Obama won. He comes off as the best person for the job and I'm quite confident in having him as the most powerful man in the world.

I wonder...if I've just found an idea for my new username. :wacky:

Im not that interested in politics but this guys made history. Seems like a pretty decent guy aswell. Good luck to him

Hey guys, just a quick reminder - this isn't spam so let's add a bit more effort to the posts, please. Thanks. =]

Am I about the only person who DOESN'T care? I really could not give a monkies if he was black, white, female or a bloody cat. He's probably just gunna turn into yet another lying poletition (sp xD) that doesn't do anything.....although I could just be tainting him with the same brush as OUR crappy government

His nationality doesn't interest me in the slightest, it's whether he actually lives up to everyones expectations that is the real challenge

I think the whole reason for the publicity comes down to how much America has moved forward, if you consider how black people were slaves all but 100 years ago. Now, with one of them being the most powerful man in the world, it's a symbol of how we've all changed.

I have a bit of faith in him. xD

I care. 'Cause like Dave said, it's the first time America has elected a black man to the highest position in the country. No one has even come close to that, let alone be nominated by their own party.
It's alright to 'not care', in fact, good for you, how progressive (xD), about his skin color, we're just saying it's monumental to have him up there since it's sooo different.

Plus, look at all the doors that have been opened up to minorities across the U.S. (in theory). Quote: "It used to be that black people only grew up to be one of three things: A basketball player, a rap artist, or [some worker]." Obviously not true, but still, none of those are president. No African-American would have predicted something like this would've happened back in the '70s when racism was so rampant, let alone their lifetimes.

So...yah.
I'm turning this into a debate thread inadvertently. >:(

Also the point is he isn't related to any slaves. His mother is white and his father was Kenyan. So in short, nothing to do with slavery, it doesn't make it any easier for black people to succeed, because he didn't live that lifestyle. Al Sharpton would be a better role model.

While it's great that he's the first black president and his election shows a huge step forward for America. I hope that people voted him in for the right reason. In other words I hope that people actually looked at some of his political positions instead of just voting for him because he is black.

I'm not that into politics and I wasn't paying too much attention to the presidential race since I'm not American. But from what I've seen, I do agree with most of Obama's policies and political positions. Hopefully he has a good run as president (although it is hard to screw up when following George Bush)

I'm going to say yes. Yes that people actually looked at the issues and the candidates' stances before voting. Everyone I've talked to at school and my friends at universities all understand Obama's positions on the economy, Iraq, and the various other challenges that are awaiting him. Of course, I haven't talked to everybody in the U.S., and there's no preventing people from voting for stupid reasons, but I think most voters understand how important this whole election was. Especially the youth, believe it or not.

Your not alone, personally I couldn't give to shit's either to be honest. Kudo's to Burgerland for voting in a Black person though. Too bad he probably won't last long before he ends up with the same fate as JFK. He may have won the majority vote but it only takes one trigger-happy racist (or that Palin whats-her-face, ya'never know) to shoot the poor guy.

But he is still black...ish. You can see hints of white in him, but on the whole he has a very african look to him and hence this is a major step forward for the world. Yeah the Emancipation Proclamation of 1863 did start the freeing of the slaves, and by the end of the Civil War the slaves were "free". But the putting down of the blacks did not stop there. They had few rights. Some unlucky blacks in the south lived lives of poorer conditions than they had been as slaves (at least as slaves they were fed and housed for no cost, now they had to suddenly pay rent etc). And thats not even the racist part of it. People hated the blacks, and were terrified of them in case they would want revenge and rebel, so the white tried to keep them down and put them in their place. Civil Rights movement put an end to most of that. But the bad feeling still existed in many areas of the deep south, and I'm assuming would still exist today, though in much lesser form.

So a black president? Wow! That has surely got to say something to all the white supremicists. It is a MAJOR leap forward. America's mis-treatment of the blacks has been seen as its major crime, just like Hitlers crime against the Jews is seen as Germany's, though really America to the blacks is worse, because it was institutionalised. No one man was putting them down, but practically every white man did for a long period of time. A black president in charge, regardless of his policies (they could turn out to be crap, but that is besides the point) is iconic in history. It turns all of that on its head. It basically says "we used to be treated with so little respect, owned as property. And now a black rules the world. Get used to it".

With that though comes what Moonchild has said... Quite a few people will still not be happy with the idea of a black president (white supremecists, neo-nazi's, whatever), and he is in major risk of getting himself killed. He'll probably have to be behind VERY thick bullet proof glass his entire precidency...
