Best Final Fantasy?

Wow, this is a toughie...if I'm being subjective, I'd probably say the best is X for being the most emotional game I have ever played as well as for ushering the series in to a new generation in such a revolutionary and successful way, but honestly I found the game to be somewhat lacking in a couple practical aspects. Certain parts of the game that could have been done better or done away with made it feel like a chore to slog through in order to get more of the story (e.g. the half-billion Seymour fights).

If I'm being objective, which I was in my actual voting on the poll, so I'd have to say XII is the best FF game. The battle system is a fantastic blend of other systems in one, the new license and gambit systems are a delight to use (once you get used to them), the story runs fairly deep, dialogue is simply fantastic in an archaic sort of way, the characters all have a LOT of character (with a few minor exceptions), the graphics are about the best on the platform, and the music is a nice blend of old and new as well. Overall, it seems like XII just tries to take all the best elements of other games, and the result is an extremely solid-feeling game and universe. I think SE knew with XII that they were releasing it to the competition of not just other games, but an entire new platform (as the PS3 was to release less than a year later and it had already been shown around plenty of times) and so they really put their best foot forward.

im currently playing FFXIII

I say III was my all time favorite via the classes and in my opinion the cloud of darkness was the best villain in the series.

Next is I, the one that started it all, Chaos is the main villain of them all.

I choose other: Final Fantasy Tactics

Its by far my favorite game of all time. I fell in love with it when it was released and I've been a FFT junkie ever since. I love everything about this game. The Job Classes, leveling up, the characters/enemies.

Its a 10/10 for me.

I've finished VI-X and currently working on IV. So far I give best storyline to VII, best gameplay I give to IX, best characters I give to VI, best villain I give to VIII (Yes Ultimecia, she seems like the most threatening character even more than Kefka and Sephiroth.) Best music is a tie between VIII and VII. Best Final Battle/Dungeon goes to VIII and VI. Best overall experience I gave to VII. It was the first Final Fantasy I played and I found it to be the overall strongest game of the series. The cinematics, the character development, and the epic chapters of the game I just found mindblowing.

I think it's no secret that my favorite one is X.

The storyline is fantastic, the emotional aspects of the game are gripping, the world is set up well, and the characters are far from shallow. Aside from that, it's just plain fun.

I'm putting my money on FFIX here, but it was a close call. It has a fantastic story which is well paced and kept me in suspense. The characters were lovable and fun to toy around with, even Quina haha.

The world had alot of interesting places to visit and explore, this was helped greatly by the many mini-games the title had to offer. Although MiniGames arn't important, it's nice to have a break from fighting and to have a goal focused reason to explore the world. The graphics for the psOne were top notch and the music was fantastic. Also, it returns the series to its roots, although I did enjoy the short stint of futuristic settings with VII and VIII.

The cutscenes were fantastic and to the point, non of this two minute cutscene to introduce a subpar character. I would recommend this title for anyone who has yet to get into the series.

Honerable mentions on why the cut was so close:

VII: I don't care what anyone says, this game is not over-rated and has alot to offer any rpg fan.
VI: Awesome, all round. In fairness, there was not much between this and FFIX for me in terms of quality. The main features that cost this the top spot was that stupid octopus and lack of mini games.

Before I clicked this thread, the image of Final Fantasy X automatically came to mind without any hesitation. I've said this in...every thread; nothing beats nostalgia. No matter what. In my opinion, at least (we all know my opinion is worshiped around here anyways).

So that's basically it. I'll add in an analysis later. I won't vote for FFX though, because I haven't actually considered any of the other games or took the time to fairly compare them all. So I'll do that soon or something

But yeah. For now: FFX

I have played and enjoyed pretty much every fantasy under the sun, but personally my favourite would have to be a coin toss between VII and X. Which probably would be the same for many people and im not just going off the popularity of VII or X, I Genuinely love each of their stories and characters within them, Sephiroth would have to be my favourite villian throughout the entire FF series and Auron to me is like and idle =D.

My favorite FF is a toss up between Final Fantasy 3j (NES/Famicom, not the crappy DS remake) and Final Fantasy 6.

The reasoning:
FF3j: While not a huge in depth story/character development, it does have a good story/plot, and a lot of mechanics started off in this game. The game is also surprisingly huge, especially for a NES title. You have 4 large world maps: The first overworld (floating continent), the 2nd (non-floating continent) covered in water, uncovered in water, and below the surface in the submarine. You also have the job system introduced (used later in FF5, and a modified version in XIII). The game, in its entirety, is insanely large. It's actually rather impressive and epic for a Famicom/NES title.

FF6: The story, in my opinion, is by far the best story in the series. It's as simple and as complex as you want it to be. The character development is amazing, the antagonist is full of pure lunacy, the graphics are amazing, the soundtrack is probably one of the best on the SNES, and really, there's just nothing bad to say about this game.

VII and X are good, but they're low on the list for me (though 8 is on the very bottom).

And since I can choose only 1 for the poll, it was 6. Damn you 1 answer polls! haha

Haha yeh there is a few i would of chosen if possible. You're definetly right in suggesting that FF3 and FF6 are both awesome games mate =D.

Finally someone that thinks exactly like me, i think that VA and the graphics just killed the remake for me, i have too played FF3 Nes and it has a lots of very interesting ideas behind like you mentioned the different kind of airships and the Job System are pretty awesome. And the game its very hard i remember the Sea Dragon Shrine being very hard (The Boss being a simple Rat was very hilarious). IMO i played it like 6 years ago and reached Lv99 with the four characters (Took a lot of time), i liked the optional dungeons (Like Bahamut, Leviathan and Odin).

I love the Unne and Dorga song, FF8 is very top in my list a shame you dont liked it.

My vote went to a toss up between VIII, IX, and X. My vote ultimately went to X though.

Final Fantasy VIII
Although I've found most people don't care much for this game, mainly because of the funky battle system, I find the characters (most of them, anyway) and story very intriguing and one of the main reasons I play through this game over and over again. Triple Triad is awesome too, and much better than the weird ass card game IX tried to throw in (more on that in a second though). I think a lot of what the story relies on is Squall x Rinoa though, and that's the only downside to it for me. A lot rides on whether the player likes Rinoa as a character, and quite frankly I don't. She's annoying and clingy. XD But Laguna <3

Final Fantasy IX
Ah, finally back to a more standard Final Fantasy. This game was just fun. I love how lighthearted a lot of the comedic scenes were, and how many of them there were compared to VIII (although it did have its humor, it was a different kind of humor). One that sticks out as one of my favorite moments was toward the end of the game in a certain village ("I...so happy..." XD). I just connected with the characters more, and it wasn't all completely about a teenage love drunk story for once (even though he does get the girl). The blasted card game was horrible though, but OCD calls and demands that I collect all the damn cards. I still don't understand what the hell the numbers and letters mean.

Final Fantasy X
There isn't much I DON'T like about this game. The characters, the story, the music, battle system, sphere grid, and hell I even love playing Blitzball (hate it in X-2 though). It has the perfect balance of seriousness and comedy, and I have hundreds of hours clocked on multiple playthroughs of this game. Some of the side quests were annoying, and I will never get all the ultimate weapons more than once (omg I was so twitchy after dodging lightning for that long). A lot of people gripe about Khimari (think I spelled it wrong, ah well), but he does have a place, the silent guardian, and he's very devoted to Yuna and everything she decides on.

And you know what? Even the side quests are admirable in their own way, I think. I mean, the fact that they are such unfun fucking time vampires that make you want to rip your hair out is so endearing. It's the one thing every X fan can bond over, and it adds character to the general opinion of the game itself lol

I fuckin love X

Voted Final Fantasy IX.

I love absolutely everything about this game. The world is beautiful, and there's so many interesting places to explore. The characters are all very useful, and I love all of the characters stories. I love the way the relationships grow with each character. The sidequests are great, and some are very challenging! I like the ability system, and how it went back to the older Final Fantasies - with the character classes and abilities for that specific class. I like the ability level up system. I love the music. I love the FMVs. And there's nothing I can really complain about in the game,

I've been avoiding this thread for a while because I didn't think it was fair for me to comment, but I honestly don't give a damn right now XD. Final Fantasy 9 is my perfect game. There is not one other game that I have played, and probably ever will play, that's better than FF9. Everything about is video game art at it's absolute best it can be. It didn't need HD graphics or voices to be an amazing memorable game. Those pixelated characters brought me more emotions than any other game I've ever played. FFIX will always be my favorite video game of all time. Which means it's also the best FF game.

I'm going to hop on the bandwagon and say that FFVII is the best game in the series (and my favorite game of all time). Yeah, it has its flaws but it's one of those rare pieces of art where you can actually see its flaws as strengths in their own quirky sort of way.

I would argue that FFVII doesn't have the best battle system in the series but I'm honestly not too concerned with that. The story and characters are what keep me coming back and is ultimately what I look for in an RPG. Lots of people seem to complain about the story being too convoluted and poorly translated but that takes me back to my original point about its flaws adding their own kind of strength to the quality of the game. I love how the story is open-ended and filled with holes since it gives me and others, as gamers, a reason to formulate theories about what actually happened. To me, it's part of the overall experience.

I'm surprised that FFIX got as many votes as FFVII (though thrilled, because I love it almost as much). I always thought that it was the most ignored title in the series.
