Originally announced last year, Theatrhythm: Final Fantasy came as a surprise for Final Fantasy fans perhaps unused to the idea of a rhythym game addendum to the series. Combining character design by Monster Octopus and music throughout the series, the game celebrates twenty-five years of Final Fantasy history. To recreate a sense of nostalgia, the original music tracks from each game were used, rather than arrangements, with different types of music reflected in different game modes.

A healthy lineup of downloadable content will be coming after release, and our review will be coming by weeks end!

So for those of you picking up the game today, what are your impressions?

Oh wow, I didn't realise it was out so soon! I pre-ordered this a while back with the special FF stylus so it should be arriving in the post any day now. Oh my god, you've gotten me excited *explodes*.
I love the FF music, so to see this game being made and sold over here (in the UK) is amazing news. I hear it's like Elite Beat Agents (although I haven't played that), which is a well received game worldwide, so I'm sure this will be great too. The only worry I have is that not enough people will want to buy it because it's a completely different genre from what FF fans are used to...but that doesn't matter imo because what we have here is a risk being taken by Square; this is exactly what Square needs to do (take risks) to get back up on their pedestal...and hopefully not fall off again.

Again: can't wait

There's a demo (with The Man and the Machine Gun and Sunleth Waterscape) on the DS Network. Based on that, there's quite a bit of vareity, as reviews have already stated.

The battle scenes are pretty fun: the background image of enemies appearing to fight your party of 4 is enjoyable to watch WHEN you have the time, which isn't very often if you choose the hardest mode - I did, and it was intense. :gasp:

The field scenes are slower and you have to move the stylus across the touch screen, guiding a disc along the swirly lines (which reminds me of the electric maze games, in which your hand must remain steady, keeping the object you're guiding AWAY from the sides of the maze).

I'm looking forward to playing the full game and accessing my favourite songs like To Zanarkand, Suteki Da Ne, Aerith's Theme, Tifa's Theme (hopefully!) and Eyes on Me. Those two songs were alright, but neither are a personal favourite of mine. :sad3:

[03/07] Theatrhythm Final Fantasy DLC Songs Cost €1 In Europe / $1 In North America

This week, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is due out in Europe, and Square Enix will also begin rolling out new downloadable songs for the game over the Nintendo eShop. Each song, Square have announced, will cost €1 (£0.90), and new songs will be released every week. Here’s the first batch of downloadable songs:

A Fleeting Dream – FFX (FMS)

Ride On – FFVIII (FMS)

Cosmo Canyon – FFVII (FMS)

In Search of Light – FFV (FMS)

Fighting Fate – FFXIII (BMS)

Fighters of the Crystal – FFXI (BMS)

The Final Battle – FFIV (BMS)

Battle Theme 1 – FFII (BMS)

Eventually, you’ll be able to download songs like “Somnus” from Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which isn’t even out yet. How’d that happen? Producer, Ichiro Hazama, told us in an interview: “Theatrhythm Final Fantasy is commemorated as a 25th anniversary title, so we wanted to be a little bit playful by adding this song. When we asked [Tetsuya] Nomura-san he casually approved it saying, “let’s do it” and that’s how we got it in.”

Update: Square Enix announced the same DLC song list in North America and each track will be $0.99.

as soon as i am able to get a 3ds this game mine  it looks soooo much fun and I might pick it up as the 3ds can be gotten pretty cheap, preowned 3ds with this game, yes please :yay:

People are buying into this nonsense? It has to be the worst use of the FF license I have ever seen! Why play a music game on a DS, I can understand Guitar Hero as you have a replica guitar but on a DS tap a screen to a beat, no thank you. Not only that the chibbi characters looks hideous and the backgrounds loop - I just so no appeal to this game and I am an avid Final Fantasy fan believe me!

Tbh its a very nice nostaligia feeding game... Its a celebration of the 25th anniversary.Plus final fantasy is not the first rythm game, not even close so for the fans of the genre and of final fantasy it is a perfect game. If I had a 3ds I would definately buy it!

You've obviously never seen Final Fantasy XIII-2...

Being bereft of all common sense tonight, I decided to try the demo (which, by the way, took FOREVER to download...) and I'd buy Rhythm Thief over this if I wanted a rhythm game on the 3DS, but I already expected as much. The songs in that are much, much better for this kind of game, being specifically composed for it, and it gives you more to do...and the presentation is better. This looks horrific. It's obviously a cheap cash-in first and a rhythm game second. Like those godawful Mario sports games that are barely sports games at all, but sell by the millions just because they have Mario in them.

Show's over, people. Buy Rhythm Thief instead.

...all the same, I got CREAMED on the highest difficulty setting of Man With A Machine Gun. You'd need the reflexes of a ninja - or to play through it about fifty million times so you know exactly what is coming - to do well when it's just chucking notes at you left, right and center...the second difficulty is the healthy medium, and probably the best one to go with.

Personally it does seem like a waste...i doubt it will hit as much in japan. The game is only a rythm game...what else can this offer other than nostalgia? The sad thing i dont see any thing more. Would be great to customize your own character and choose which side you want, chaos or cosmos.

I just dont see a lot of replayability. Is there any other features this has? I can understand that this is fan service for fans, but who else will this attract? There has to be more.

Dont bother......even responding more than once. Dont feed the Troll.

Anyways........i have a feeling this is going to miss. Rythmic game doesnt feel so strong and enjoyable. Its not like guitar hero where it has a more broad audience.

I also see some swearing somewhere in there, so this is your last warning.

How could people claim that this game is utter nonsense or a waste?! D:
I think this game is an awesome tribute to the wonderful music throughout the FF series and it gives fans a fun way to appreciate the songs. >.>;

This may seem like Square-Enix's way to reap in some profit, but I honestly believe that it is a worthy music title, especially for RPG fans. I honestly wish there were more music games based on other RPGs.

With that said, I have the game, but I don't have a 3DS to play it (don't ask how that happened, I'm quite miserable about it since the case has been taunting me for two days already). -.-;
I've played my friend's copy though && it's very fun! I already know that I'm gonna go crazy trying to get perfect 'S' ranks on the songs - but I find perfecting songs in music games as a fun challenge, so... :p

Also, I don't mind paying $0.99 for each song since I know that I'll be replaying the heck out of 'em and there are a few good songs up for download. I heard that there's tax though, so the unevenness irks me... *sigh*

Other than playing songs. What else does this game has to offer? How much replayability will it offer?

How can we NOT think this game is a waste? It doesnt offer much at all

Hmm. In my opinion, it offers as much replay-value as any other music based game, perhaps with the exception of DDR, PIU, and Guitar Hero, which arguably are more worthwhile because the first two dancing games allow the player to add some physical activity/exercise to their day, and the latter instrument-based game may reinforce "guitar-playing skills."

Otherwise, I consider Theatrhythm to be similar to Elite Beat Agents and Taiko Drum Master - both handheld music games which I found lots of fun to play. >.>;
I think people should realize that this game isn't claiming to be an awesome, fantastic new RPG game. It's simply a music game - take it or leave it.

I'm sure that the fans who generally love music games (of ALL kinds, not just Guitar Hero or DDR, which are horribly mainstream tbh) && FF music will have at least a decent amount of fun playing this game. Perhaps you are not one of those? xD

I enjoy rythm games. But not based on obscure fandom for music that comes in songs. Replay value would be based on songs alone. Theres just no drive to play more. Theres the "hey, this looks decent enough" but theres nothing more.

I've played through quite a few of the tracks now - all of the initial music for FFI, VI, VII, VIII, IX, X and XIII - and I must say, the selection and range of songs is a little bit disappointing. :hmmm: I should have realised there would only be around 5 songs per Final Fantasy. :lew:

The range of modes adds some variety and three of the four are enjoyable.
  • The field music presents sweeping, cartoony scenes from FF games, often specific, which is a nice, albeit small, touch. These instructions are varied, but not too challenging. These are quite possibly the easiest to complete to a high standard.
  • The battle mode is the most fun as it's fast paced (and nice to see 4 characters lined up, against an opponent). They're the more challenging, too - absolutely crazy if you attempt them at the highest difficulty setting - so I'm quite looking forward to mastering these! If you do well, summon monsters appear, unleashing a powerful attack, which is kinda awesome. ;)
  • The 'events' mode creates a feeling of nostalgia - naturally. The instructions given in these levels tend to feel more dynamic and varied. Furthermore, you feel like a cunductor as the cursor (and your stylus) sweeps across the screen in time with the music!
  • The 'Prelude' and 'Ending' modes, which make up 2/5 pieces, are just a bit dull... You tap a screen as shiny notes float towards a crystal... yay? To Zanarkand is set to this mode, which is rather disappointing.

Overall, it's an enjoyable game, and it certainly feels like a salute to the Final Fantasy series - those games we've loved (and hated) over the past 25 years - but the number of tracks available, both in the game and via DLC, is currently disappointing. :hmmm:

I hope to see the following:
  • Matoya's Cave - which WILL be available to download!
  • Tifa's Theme (VII)
  • Costa Del Sol (VII)
  • Balamb Garden (VIII)
  • Eyes on Me (VIII - the standard version)
  • Fisherman's Horizon (VIII)
  • Vamo Alla Flamenco (IX)
  • Battle (X)
  • Tidus' Theme (X)
  • Yuna's Theme (X)
  • Calm Lands (X-2)
  • 1000 Words (X-2)
  • Blinded by Light (XIII)
  • The Yaschas Massif (XIII) - so jazzy!
  • Kimi Ga Irukara (XIII - vocal theme)
  • Last Hunters (XIII-2)
  • Knight of the Goddess (XIII-2)
  • Noel's Theme (XIII-2)
  • Yeul's Theme (XIII-2)
  • New World (XIII-2)

And so many more.... :sad3:

I just believe it could be more. For example like i said before: create your own character (such as KH:Mobile, KH Re:coded, FF brigade (i think)). The more closer to perfect games you have, the more content to customize your character. And of course some other mini games based on rhythm. But overall....just playing rhythm game and enjoying the game is only one perk.

I personally think that a game like this to celebrate 25 years of FF Music is a very good idea, it was partly the music that got me into the series in the first place, sooo a game with all the FF Music in it just makes me wanna pull out my money straight away. I love the music of FF and a game like this to celebrate 25 years of epic soundtracks is a very good idea

Well it makes you feel like re-playing the old ff games again...meaning that it adds replayability to your current gaming library rather than having to go out and buy newer games? Also, this game is simply the most addictive 3DS game I've played to date, even with its simplicity, so whether it has this huge collectible library in the game, or the ability to customise characters (even though there are new abilities and items to collect) is a pretty pointless argument. If a game is good enough, you'll play it over and over whatever extras are included. I know I will anyway ;)

Ive seen it, and it doesnt really hold up for the "playing an old game" feel...just full of easter eggs. Point is, it can be better. And no the replay value is low. A completionist as i am, i know how long it will last when you finish? Or just watching a scene?

The biggest defense is "its good enough"?

Maybe you just don't like the game enough to see how addictive it can be? Of course it has the "I feel like playing the old games again" feel! That's the whole point of the game and if watching scenes and listening to the music from the old games doesn't make you feel like playing them again I don't know what will tbh.

The biggest defence is that you'll be playing it for at least months just for the style of game that it is...it doesn't need to be huge. Just look at Guitar Hero for a sec: barely any collectables and just songs (that I've heard of) and yet people continued to play that for yeeeears. Why? Because it's addictive. Simple as that.
