I am new to this forum and want to know your views on the Viera. Well, I just picked up Final Fantasy XII. I really don't like the fact that Fran is treated like an outsider by the Viera simply because she befriended a human and choose to stay by his side. Do the Viera really take that much pride in their race that they will banish anyone who chooses to befriend someone from another race? Looking forward to know your thoughts.

Thanks..

Personally i don't think it's because she left to be with a Human, but more that she left the woods. The viera are a proud and Secretive race, and live their lives in touch with the woods.

with Fran leaving to pursue other goals, it's as though she has given up her heritage as a Viera, which will piss off most people when it comes down to it.

The Viera...my thoughts...I'm not overly keen on them. They're as close to blatant fanservice that FF gets...even more so than Rikku in X-2. An entire race of BUNNY GIRLS. Its like a naturalist's version of a Playboy Club in the Salikawood...I'd love to meet the male equivalent, assuming there is one...

Focusing on Fran herself...eh, I'd have liked to have had more character development. She was Balthier's Chewbacca, and she didn't get much attention paid to her, which was unfortunate. As a character, she was quite useful - more so than Penelo, anyway - and her Quickenings were quite fun. Shatterheart is awesome ♥

Well, you actually learn that Fran is shunned by the Viera of Eruyt more because she left the forest (as Snow Villiers rightfully said) - a big taboo for the Viera people. I don't actually think much about how secluded the Viera are from everyone else of Ivalice. I just say that it's fair enough for the Viera. At least they don't persecute and kill those who stray from the woods.

Eruyt was just a big device to get more Fran and Viera focus anyway. It's just too bad that like many of FFXII's characters, it still didn't provide that much focus for Fran. Once the Eruyt episode is done, so is Fran's focus in the story. At least as a character her worth in the story is greater than that of Vaan's and Penelo's.

@Dweia: the male equivalent, AFAIK, are the Garif, who meet with the viera twice a year or something to mate...so i've heard. It makes sense - they're buff warriors of the plains and the viera are beautiful tree-huggers in a dense forest. :)

Wait, WHAT?!
...you are kidding, of course. Right?
That is an extremely disturbing thought...what do you get when you cross a bunny girl with a hairy bull-ape-thing? And I thought the politics in FFXII were messy...

On a random note...I did like Ktjn's sidequests in XII. Grilling her for the best results was a lot of fun, and it gave me something to do in between hunting marks...

@Dweia + Judicator: it's just a rumor that I've read on other FF sites (it is popular though). They in turn probably got that bit of info from a magazine or a fanbook or artbook/interview somewhere, but I don't know of any links. I don't see any other suitors, and the two races do compliment each other. This is one of those things that make you go 'eh' after a while. It would make more sense than vieras being created by the forest, methinks :x

on a side note, who in the world would want to see a bunch of guys in skimpy bunny outfits, that's just disgusting

I think the Viera are a very interesting race.

sucks that they exclude you for leaving the forest. but it's not like its anything unheard of. Its' kind of sad Fran isnt welcomed there, but she knew what she was doing when she left, and she knew she didn't belong there :/

Were it not for the Mithra, Viera would be the most fapworthy race evar. Square Enix clearly conceived them for the Japonese nerds to use as fap fodder.

Fran was outcast because she chose to leave the wood, which is prohibited by viera law (the Green Word). No viera who have left are allowed in and Fran obviously didn't know balthier when she left, so it's safe to say the other viera have no reason to know about him or their partnership.

I don't like the viera. They're as original as a copy of the Tolkienian elves with hentai appearance can be. And Fran is the most useless party member, with the worst stats in the game, and never being better than third best at anything.

Yeah she didnt leave to be with a human because She stated she was 50 years old when she left...and there is no way balthier was anywhere close to her age or even born at the time.

Other than that I thought they viera were SEXY! Honestly they were Literally playboy bunnies!!! with the ears and outfits. plus they all had rockin tan skin and sexy clad outfits haha

Personally, I like the Viera race. Their way of life is pure, they do not allow the impurities of man to corrupt them and stick strictly with the way of how life was before machines and all that jazz were even created. Sure they can be a bit cold hearted but if you really think about it, put yourself in their shoes, would you be so trusting of a race that does nothing but war upon one another and seek to destroy their homes and their planet that has given them so much? And I don't think they intend to be so cruel and demeaning to a Viera that left the wood and chose to roam with man, possibly it in fact hurts them when one of their own chooses to live a life of impurity and contribute to killing the earth instead of trying to understand it and be thankful for everything it has given them.

At first however, and I'm not going to lie, I thought the Viera were rather cold when I first played the game. I thought they were an uncaring race, but the more I thought about it, and the more it made me mad, I also began to realize this. Fran was in a high standing within the race, her sister being the leader, I think that it greatly hurt them more when she left and chose a life where she stole. It was basically like she was choosing a life of greed, so they misunderstood her intention of just wanting to see other things in the world other then the wood all day long.

But this brings me back, can you blame them? I certainly can't nor am I going to.

The Viera can rightly go to hell.

You think the elves in Tolkein were stuck up and arrogant? HA! The Viera could teach them a thing or two. If I could, I would have utterly laid waste to the entire village.

Oh? I'm just a violent Hume that doesn't know shit, huh? All Humes are evil and corrupted and foul and don't know any honesty or anything slightly redeeming, huh? Well guess what bitch, I just so happen to be a fugitive from my own home, am hunted down by a tyrannical empire -- who is encroaching on your squirrel-shit infested woods bytheway -- and am fighting for my life every single day, and I live with that EVERY WAKING MOMENT while in the process of bringing down said empire. And you say that all I know is violence? BITCH you don't know the meaning of violence!

Yet.

Everything that has happened to me before has been me simply fighting for survival. Now I'm gonna show you some uneccessary f**king violence you pickle-sniffing, halfwit, inbred, backwards, low-tech, glassy-eyed, thong-wearing, weed-praising, shit-flinging, APE!

*insert sounds of violently pulping lots and lots of oranges in a giant blender*

No, I don't like the Viera much. They can take their playboy bunny attitude and shove it up their little tufted asses. Oh wait! That isn't possible! Their heads are already up there!

The Viera annoyed me if im honest.
After finding out why Fran was an outcast of the Viera it just made me want to kill a few in retaliation -__-
If they are so secretive and proud why only have a race of Females?
Although I can see why it would be a choice, for it would mean that there wouldnt be much violence etc. between them.

Although I still hate the Viera Fran was an extremely useful character :)

The Viera seemed like a cult more than a race to me. If you leave there circle you can never go back?
That seems a little wierd, and on top of that the only female thing? Cult....
And if you don't believe what they believe they seem to hear the woods and if your not a Viera the woods hates you? Cult again...

Seriously everything about this "race" screams Cult to me.

Now you mention it everything you have said does seem to sum up to the 'Race' being a cult.
Outsiders shunned away if not threatened away due to being vile and corrupted humes! Now I think about it they must be corrupted and the only thing I can think of is a similar system to the leader of the cult in Silent Hill. Everything the leader said was the final word/s.
The fact that Fran was as good as dead to the other Viera after she left the forest seems to sum up the same thing. A cult, as with most, you leave and turn your back on the cult you can never come back.

CULT!

I found them to be pretty dull, to be honest. As someone else pointed out earlier in the thread, they seemed to be little more than blatant fanservice, and we never really found out much of substance regarding them. I could tolerate Fran as a playable character - but I didn't use her myself unless forced to. I'm just not the type of guy who finds enjoyment in playing scantily clad females.

I find it rather inconceivable that one entire race would be solely female. How the heck do they reproduce? Are they like Namekians that can asexually reproduce without the need of a male counterpart? And I was put off by their unfounded bias towards outsiders and shunning of those that leave the woods. Maybe they're Final Fantasy's scientology faction? Beauty is skin deep, but ugly goes straight to the bone. In that regards Fran is simply and thoroughly gorgeous. The others can rot in their secluded hideaway until they grow up >.>
