I really would like to do it. Walking out the house in it is a different matter entirely, though.

Finding a reason to go out of the house in it is tricky in itself. Examples of situations I could twist to make it relevant / socially acceptable are not springing to mind right now.

A Seafood Festival or an event at a local aquarium, you could try to pose as a mascot perhaps? If anyone asks, you could just say you're on your way to work or something. It is a cool idea for a costume though, and quite original

Also, I feel the video in the OP sums up sports in general for me as well Football would be quite interesting, though, if they all had to play the game dressed up as their appropriate mascots, I would watch that

Yep, sums up my thoughts exactly. Football I leave to the men I know personally in my life: my bf, my stepdad, my dad, and my two brothers, and recently one of my cousins.

Even if I was to attend a fancy dress part event, could you imagine, amongst the vampires, devils, angels, gangsters and superheroes, that a purple octopus with goofy teeth and mad eyes would go down well?

That would also give me a reason to say "Yaaaaouch! Seafood soup!"

I can't imagine the chances of that happening are very high, though.

Yes! I've always felt that with sport. It's just a personal thing with me, but I never find it very interesting to watch, and I'm awful when I play it myself. I just imagine that it would be much, much more fun if people dressed up in costumes as they played sport. Since you Americans have teams with all sorts of crazy names, it would be hilarious to see appropriate costumes designed for them. THEN I'd be glued to the screen!
