Ok, it's no secret that most people hate Vaan, and pretty much the reason is because he's underdeveloped. And I agree. He was made to be the main character but the other characters lead the action from very early in the game. I think that if Vaan had been more developed and given more of a role in the story, besides "my brother was killed" and "I wanna be a sky pirate", then people would appreciate him more. One of the phrases that killed his character in most people's eyes is "I'm just along for the ride." The kid is not bad per se, he has his heart set in the right place and all, but being sort of a tag along does diminish his character. I mean, it's pretty much the same thing with Tidus. A lot of people hate him, but there are people who like him also. He's more memorable than Vaan because Tidus actually did play a pivotal role in the storyline. So, my question is: do you think Vaan would be more appreciated if he had been more developed and given better dialogue?

What character wouldn't be more appreciated if they were developed more and given better dialogue?

I know it seems like a dumb question, but exactly that's why I ask it. There are people who have hated characters that were developed simply on the grounds of their personality (ie. Tidus). I even heard some people hate on Cloud because they feel his personality is "emo". Same with Squall. I mean a lot of people like them, unlike Tidus and Vaan, but there's a strong opinion of dislike from some sectors of the fandom. Zidane is an example of a character that, as far I know, generates positive reviews because of his more laidback and carefree personality. I'm just posing a theoretical question, that given what we were given of Vaan's personality and backstory, should it be expanded upon, would he still suffer the same fate as Tidus. I mean no character is liked 100%, but you know when there's a strong majority of dislike for the character or on the contrary, a lot of support for that character. I just ask this because even though Vaan shares many personality traits with Tidus (they're both the energetic youth of the group, with a strong sense of justice, etc.) but Vaan's personality seems to me more subdued. He's vocal but not in the same way as Tidus. Tidus was more extroverted per se, Vaan just seems to have outbursts, like when he saw Basch the first time, and thought he was his brother's killer. Other than that Vaan seems more collected than Tidus and definitely not "emo" if such a trait can apply to Cloud and Squall. Sorry for that long post.

I don't dislike Vaan or Tidus. I don't think Vaan is irrelevant or anything, and Tidus didn't seem stupid or unlikable to me. They were fine IMO. :/

I hate Vaan cuz he is too emo and whiney, not to mention that his character design sucks ass.

Plus after Jahara, he doesn't really contribute anything to the main storyline. The main characters imo are really Ashe and Balthier since they get the most character development by far in the game.

Still at least Vaan isn't Pennelo who is really annoying and ugly for an FF chick. Plus she doesn't add anything whatsoever to the story aside from getting kidnapped.

I mean after Lhusu, seriously what does she add to the main storlyline? Nothing imo. Plus I resent the fact that she basically tags along for the ride and we forced to have annoying, ugly butt for the rest of the game.

ZOMG SHE R NOUGHT HAWT DEN SHE MUST B FAILZZZ
inoerite?
You could say the same about Vaan, he doesn't contribute much to the story, the same with Basche or Fran. Balthier doesn't do a lot either, he just acts as a character than Ashe can discuss her stupid plans with. No discuss isn't even the right word, she tells him, and he says something that sounds profound, when in reality, it isn't.
Vaan isn't whiney nor is he an emo, he isn't developed enough to be anything really.
People that call cloud or squall emoes are stupid, they are a bit introverted, they don't slit their wrists and BAWWWWW about how no one understands them.
I also think Tidus is a good character and isn't really anything like Vaan.

i thought he was okay. but i don't focus on whos the main charecter. although hes like 30 levels ahead of every one else. (lol) i kind of liked him. and all my friends say he was gay because of his vest. yes i do think he would be better if they developed him more, and gave him a better role.

Vaan would have been more likable had he been given a better voice, wardrobe, hair style and an all round better reason for helping Ashe and Co than "my brother was killed i want to avenge him"

I don't think Vaan was meant to be the main character, he was an observer "along for the ride". I think Square's idea for XII was to not give the player control over the main character (which was Ashe IMO) but rather give the player control over an observer who happened to be tagging along (think of it as playing VIII as Zell, or VII as Yuffie). If you compare Vaan to someone like Zell than it kinda justifies the lack of character development IMO.

However, I prefer to play as the main character, so for that reason I disliked Vaan mainly because by the end of the game I didn't know much about him.

on a lighter topic how the hell is Vaan emo?

I know why you all hate Vaan. Me? I don't.

Just remember, kiddies. He doesn't exactly get any romance going on in this game. All other main characters in previous games have had some form of romance in the story.

If he had more character development, I know I would have liked him more. I think Sashman is right about square not giving you control of the main character. I'm glad that they want to try new ideas, but I think I'd rather be in control of the main man in the next game.

Vaan sure does get some glances from Penelo, and it's obvious that they have a crush on each other. They don't admit it though, so I guess he doesn't really have a lot of lovin. I'm actually ok with that, because Vaan locking lips with someone isn't exactly something I dream about seeing.

Vaan in my opion could be a better character with a personallity tweak and if he had a better roll and better background all the better.

Also I hate not playering the main character, I've played a couple of games like that and like this one they weren't as good as they could have been.

I think I probably would have appreciated him more if he actually FELT like the main character. He would probably be on par with Tidus actually. I don't really like the guy, but I don't hate him either yet I was attached to him because he was the main character.
I was certainly more attached to Balthier than Vaan. It's a shame really because he could have been so less like a burden and more like the hero

He isn't, that's just garbage imo... you can disagree though, ofcourse. I think you should ignore people who say things such as "Vaan is emo", "Tidus is emo", "Cloud is emo" etc because all of that is opinionated drivel.

I agree with the majority here. Typically, we are so used to playing and controlling the main character that even though Vaan wasn't really considered as the "main character", the fact that I controlled him throughout the journey still makes him a main character to a certain degree, which is probably the problem and why I think that he is not as appreciated by many players. People probably still viewed him as a main character anyway. You control someone in a game, then the general feel that he is a main character (even if he is not) is just there.

Honestly, I just didn't like his disposition for some reason (he just carelessly stated, "I'm just along for the ride", which made me kinda lazy to play the game later on) and I also felt that his character was underdeveloped in FFXII. If he was more developed and given a more interesting background, then there's no doubt that I would've liked him more. The problem is that I just couldn't get to know Vaan very well at all...

HardKoreEnigma also brings a good topic. His voice. He sounds like some teenage kid from the Disney channel or something.
There is nothing alluring about it, in my opinion. >.> At least Balthier and Fran had very interesting voices...but again, my opinion. And yes, I know he's supposed to be just that - a teenager. But that particular voice just doesn't do it for me. I probably would've liked Vaan a little better if I had not heard his voice at all.

Vaan doesn't refer to his brother's death as a motivator for his journey enough. At least we could sympathize with his quest for revenge haha!

I agree about the voice thing! Better voice = deeper IMO. I want my main character to be a bit badass ya know.

I know he's 17 but thats no excuse for sounding like a girl.

I quite enjoyed Vaan. The only thing i disliked about him was when he would stand there flexing his abs.:P

But overall he did develop well as the story progressed and matured a lot since back in rabanastre.

I think Basch would have to be my favorite and could possibly be considered the main character. I always controlled Vaan but I'm gonna have to agree with the voice thing. That was ridiculous.

And please 1 of you people calling him 'emo' explain to me what it means.

I already know but most people who say it have know idea.
