For this topic, don't discuss whether or not you want a remake of Final Fantasy VII... but have you ever had trouble picturing it? Unlike FFI - FFVI, games like Final Fantasy VII were shown in an isometric perspective. It would be difficult to recreate that same feel with much better graphics. Even in the original, the environment graphics were very good but the blocky characters stood out like sore thumbs. Take these two images for example. How do you recreate this scene with graphics as good as this?

for the people who have played the original and cant really view it any other way, it would be difficult to imagine like you said. but when i look for a FFVII that has a good graphics set-up its the PC version of the game. it looks a little more...realistic but it is just too weird to see after playing the PS1 version.

i just cant picture it. it would just look too weird, but for all of the weird points, i would like to see how it would turn out.

My answer would be that you can't. This was one of the reasons I disliked Crisis Core... Sure the characters were detailed etc, but the environments weren't as detailed as the FFVII original environments. Scenes such as that which you posted were creative, inventive, artisitc, beautiful to the eyes. May became a lot more generic in a remake, with the same wall here, there and over there too, perhaps flipped sideways to make it look different, but ultimately be the same wall... That tends to happen when people rely on 3d for environments, such as seen in Crisis Core, FFXII and FFX.

I think it would look very different. Not particulary sure I actually want to see it. I think I'm happy enough with the above scene.

One thing I have trouble picturing is the Wall Market scene. Cloud in those graphics....in a dress seems really amusing but like, I really don't think it would work. In fact the whole of the Wall Market experience really. Honey Bee in anyone :wacky:

I'd absolutely LOVE to see how they'd do it though xD

I'd love to see it if they did... But somehow I don't think they would. Or they'd tone it down a lot.
I dunno... Don Corneo jumping onto the table slobbering, and thrusting at the air while screaming for love from Cloud/ Tifa / Aerith might cause something in modern quality graphics getting an X-rating... And that's not to mention the Cloud gay rape scene in the bath of Honeybee Inn...

Reasons for why FFVII should be left alone. With its current graphics it looks comical. With new graphics it might look a little too weird. and I certainly don't want a censored FFVII, no no I want it to be just as weird, Dons balls n'all.

That just made me laugh, I swear. I completely forgot about him dressing up as a girl and going into that place. Man I miss that game, but graphically it would be very hard to "1up" the original graphics. I mean they were just plain good. Also the FMVs were revolutionary, only thing I can think is translate them to Bluray standards or even beyond that.

I miss this game, but to play it again from the beginning (unless it's like a whole new game) it would be hard to do. I enjoyed it so much, that I would rather not make it less apetising playing it a 2nd time through.

I couldn't imagine new graphics for this game, but if they did try it, well I assume it would be like Advent Children.

Wow thats a really really good point i never gave thought to this before. It would just look weird, and also how would the world map work??? If the graphics were on that sorta scale the world map would just feel stupid really, because all the houses are tiny, and it would just be loads of grass and mountains....Flying the airship or submarine would seem stange if u kno what im saying.
I think to make it look respectable SE would have to totally re-design almost all the towns and caves etc.
It just wouldnt work would it?
Good thread man

I think the world map would be dropped... Or if not, they'd need cuter cartoony graphics (but still good graphics of good quality)... In which case there would be little point to the remake anyway...

And the airship and submarine will not be flyable / sail-able as there will be no world map to drive them on... They'll be referenced etc, and it'll probably be likely that you just get to pick where you want to go like FFX and FFXII's crappy system... There will probably be no actual driving about, sadly.

We haven't seen a world map or flyable airships, or vehicles of any kind since FF9.. The PSX era of Final Fantasy (up to which point every game included them). There were no vehicles or world map in the PS2 era... What is there for us to expect them to return to it in the PS3 era?
It'll be different. Something I don't really want to see really...

MY GOD! Any remake of FF VII would look like Advent Children physically and it would be spectacular the music score would splendid and the fight Imagine the fights man! If Crisis Core is anything to go by Sqaure has big plans for a remake....if they even are doing a remake ?

Yes... I have trouble picturing it. FFVII gave me a feeling like no other FF had--- like most of you have agreed to, it's because of the stunning environments. I am afraid that it will be like CC, and end up being more like watching a movie opposed to playing an actual game. I loved CC, I really did, but it just was not a fun game to play. It was just a show-off of pretty graphics, IMO... they might as well have made it a cute little movie to watch on the PSP. =P

I don't want FFVII to become that... I actually want to play the game with better graphics. I don't want to watch the events go by, I want to experience them.

Yes, this would be one possibility. Just because graphics technology is capable of being very realistic, it doesn't mean it has to be used to create realism. One example is the game Okami - great graphics, but not realistic graphics. For FFVII they could use a more cartoony or anime-like style. Of course, if they remade it for the Nintendo DS or PSP instead of the PS3 then this would not be so much of a problem.

FFVII's graphics look like they do because the backgrounds were pre-rendered. Starting from FFX (I think), they switched to full real-time, meaning that the console computes and renders the graphical environment directly from mathematical instructions instead of just displaying a pre-made image. The FFVII characters look blocky in comparison because they are real-time animated figures that are superimposed on the pre-rendered backgrounds. If the game were remade, there is no way that they would return to this practice - they would make it completely real-time and the camera would probably follow the player character, like in FFXII and Crisis Core, instead of being fixed.

When I played the original back when it first came out, I honestly was blown away with the graphics. Later I learned that Square was using an experimental graphics engine simply called 'The White Graphics Engine' I don't know if they did anything with it after wards, but I see similarities and improvements in FF8.

But after playing Crisis Core and finding myself in some of the same areas that was covered in the original, yeah... it's hard to imagine, but obviously possible to translate it in 3D terms and maintain accuracy and atmosphere.

Crystal Tools, originally known as the White Engine was developed for 7th generation consoles (360, PS3, Wii, and PC)... it has nothing to do with the quality of FFVII graphics.

But yes, you are correct that they probably did face challenges in Crisis Core to what they would face in a FFVII remake. As someone stated earlier, the biggest challenge would be coupling detail with the sheer grandeur of the world. It's a realm that is far too big to detail every plant and tree... but the classic overworld would look shoddy and underdeveloped if the game attempted to take a realistic appearance.

lol people who hav played crisis core and doc and hav watch AC and hav not played the original FF7 will be like o shit barret is funny as hell and clouds personality will be way different (not freakin emo)

I think too many people expect a remake after the intro being remade for the PS3 demo....as cool as it would be to pay homage to the game, I think it would be weird, considering how far graphics have come along in the decade between now and FFVII.

I LOVE the graphics and the way VII looks. It looks like a FANTASY world, and if it was to be recreated with the technology we have now....part of that would be lost, and it would make things look TOO real.

The cartoon-humour would be lost, as the cartoon appearance of the characters would be lost...

I think it could work, obviously....but I reckon most die-hard VII fans would feel....awkward playing it, if you get what I mean.
