Nintendo The Tales of Symphonia

I love this game. I haven't played it in almost a year, however, I still catch myself thinking about this game and wanting to play it every so often.

I so need to find this game. Im gutted as I was bidding for it on ebay and someone beat me to it by £1.50! I need it badly :(

Started up yet another file for this game yesterday. I've been playing Tales of Vesperia for the last few months, and I find it amazing just how much better Symphonia is in pretty much every area. I even prefer Symphonia's (a Gamecube game) graphics to Vesperia's (a 360 game). Better characters, boss battles, soundtracks, locations, battle system (though they're all similar), and plot twists.

I hate to bump an old topic, but I also didn't want to start a new topic for the same game series.

The sequel to this game is out in Europe today at long last.

I'm hoping to go nab myself a copy (if I can find one) after work from my local Asda, but the site claims they're out of stock already o_0 Any fellow English fans buying it today, what's the prices in the shops that have bothered to get a copy or two of this :)

I still haven't completed the first game as I only found a copy recently, I'll still be buying this in the first week as I'm desperate for a decent rpg on the Wii*.

*(I have just bought Spectrobes on the cheap and that looks good, finally some competition haha)

I want to get that game real bad, but I cant find the time to buy it. I heard that you can use the heroes from the prequel, so it should be a fun, nostalgic experience.

Graphics? I dunno, but I have to vehemently concur with all other points. Well, besides
Mithos
being a queer antagonist. I'd actually recently just purchased it again myself, and loved every minute of it.

Unfortunately, back then when I first played was a time when I didn't really have a lot to demand of a villain. Since I've replayed, I have to say that
Mithos' childish ambition to destroy two entire planets just for the ressurection of someone who's been dead for thousands of years is something that just irritates the hell out of me after seeing how stupid and serious his character really is.

With the way he cries like a baby and sucks at being racist, I just have a horrible time taking him seriously, remembering how incredibly cheesy his end is. <_<

DO EEEEEEEEEEEEET

it's great :wacky:

I think the guy at gamestop told me that they also stopped distributing the game a short while after it was released, so it's hard to get a hold of.

Well, Tales of Symphonia isn't a game series, Knights of Ratatosk is merely a sequel; it should be fine to make another thread for an entirely different game, I would think.

Oh wow, that's really surprising.

I reeeaally wasn't a fan of the sequel. I loved the first one, my friend and I played it loads and saw this thing to the end and again. But we just couldn't seem to uphold that same enthusiasm for the second.. I hope you enjoy it better though.

I've heard that a lot of people who played the original didn't really like the sequel. The only reason I'd actually even wanted to play is a revamped Lloyd and Zelos and because I didn't think the main character would sound like someone that makes me want to vomit. :gmonster:

Heh ^^ I quite like Emil so far *ducks* he'll toughen up on his own I have no doubt. His voice is a pain though I'll admit.

Laura Bailey's in almost every game I'm playing at the moment, Persona 4, Star Ocean.. I recognised her right away.

I was surprised at where I got the game. I expected it to be like Magna Carta 2 and only be sold, full retail price at Game and Gamestation. I found it in the indie store/now a regional chain for £27, it was nowhere else o_0 I'm glad I got my copy though, with this and Spectrobes my Wii is actually being used again. Both of us are happy ;)

At least I got unstuck in Symphonia 1, now I'm not sure if I should at least finish that one first or play 2 that I've just bought haha.

The game looks great to me,
Richter looks like a clone of Kratos, I actually thought it was him until they named him. Sigh.

That's true, I just figured as it was the sequel to it, it'd be ok. I couldn't find a "Tales of" series topic, somebody should open one ^_^ I really like the series, it's just a shame that the company who makes them rarely bother with us Europeans, and when they do they send out 5 copies for each country, lol.

If he's anything like Luke Fon Fabre, I feel really bad for Nephry. :wacky:

Probably should so that things in the sequel will make sense. If they start talking about Renegades, Desians, Summon Spirits, half-elf racism, why talk of
Mithos as a hero isn't allowed in Heimdall
, etc. you're just going to be lost. :wacky:

Though, I think if you've at least made it to Derris Kharlan, you should probably be just fine.

Richter looks like a clone of Kratos, I actually thought it was him until they named him. Sigh.
nowai, kratos is hot D:

richter is pretty <_<

My brother and I were going to start a file on ToS 2 yesterday but the Wiimote batteries were dead. :wacky:

I watched my brothers play a bit when I first got the game for them and so far Emil appears to be an annoying little twat. >_> It would be quite hard to top Luke though.

QFT.

Instead of ToS 2, we decided to play ToS. I always forget how completely awesome this game is when I haven't played for awhile. It's one of those games that I never get tired of playing.

But Derek is right, Yggdrassil is a lame villain. >_>

And for those who are looking for it, I see used copies at Gamestop often. Amazon is another possibility. The New price at Amazon is ridiculous but you can probably find a good used copy for a decent price.

wow, the wiimotes dont come with some sort of adapter? :wacky:

I've heard people say you could just use gamecube controllers instead of wiimotes, though.

Actually, looking back over wikipedia, it seems like I have misjudged Emil's character. I thought that he was after Lloyd for the incident that occurred when the g
iant kharlan tree went out of control and destroyed Palmacosta
... However, it doesn't look that way. D:

However, Wiki says:

During the events of the first game, Lloyd Irving and his companions embarked to a journey that led to the merging of the twin worlds of Sylvarant and Tethe'alla. After the lands became one, however, maps were rendered useless and the climate went through many vast changes: desert towns became frozen wastelands and lakes dried up into valleys. All of this stems from an overlooked factor in the unification of the worlds: the spirit of the old Kharlan Tree, Ratatosk, still exists somewhere, and its slumber has sent the world into chaos.[2] To complicate matters, tensions have quickly escalated between the people of the two worlds. The Tethe'allans look down upon the Sylvaranti due to their inferior technology, and the Sylvaranti fear the Tethe'allans for their power. Two years have passed since the worlds were first merged, and the Sylvaranti have created an army, known as the Vanguard, with which to rise against the Church of Martel and the Tethe'allans.

One day, the Church of Martel goes to war with the Vanguard, and Sylvarant's city of Palmacosta is caught in the crossfire. Countless innocent lives are lost and the city is consumed in flames. This event comes to be known as the "Blood Purge," a massacre allegedly led by the same Lloyd Irving who helped unite the worlds two years before. Emil Castagnier, a Palmacostan boy, is forced to watch as his parents are killed by Lloyd; after this traumatic incident, he is sent to Luin to live with his aunt and uncle. He suffers continual mistreatment from them, however, and he is further ostracized by the people of the city, who view Lloyd as a hero.

Emil's life takes a dramatic turn when he befriends Marta Lualdi, a girl who is being hunted by the Vanguard and the enigmatic Richter Abend alike. Determined to protect her, Emil confronts Richter and helps Marta escape with the aid of Tenebrae, a centurion spirit who serves Ratatosk. Tenebrae states that there are other centurions who lie in a dormant state: to restore balance to the world's environment, all of them should be awoken in order to revive Ratatosk. Emil forms a pact with Tenebrae, and in so doing becomes the Knight of Ratatosk. So it is that Emil and Marta embark on their journey of revenge and restoration.

I'm not so much as more interested in Emil now, but I'm very curious about what happened to our absent-minded hero and his dwarven vows D:

T-T-TOTALLY DOOOOOOOOOOOD

like i said earlier, i recently replayed it myself. Still my favorite friggin' RPG of all time:neomon:

got mine on ebay for 25 bucks :neomon: small price to pay for an epic addition to a gaming collection imo.

^_^ Tales of Symphonia is hands down, My Favorite game. Amazing story, a great battle system, some of the best characters ever... I just freaking love that game. Before Tales of Symphonia, I usually never did another playthrough once I beat a game... but after that game. I play like every game through like 3 times just to get every little secret, and costume and everything. That game is just, like the Holy Grail of Games for me. Everyone has always told me I'm The Queen of Final Fantasy VIII and all that, but honestly, Final Fantasy VIII comes in a distant second compared to this masterpiece. :jess: Yeah. I love this game :gasp:

I was really disappointed to find that the second game left you with a pansy, a freak, and a Pokemon for your lasting party while everyone else made cameos in a plot much bigger than them. I also wasn't a fan of all these new plot elements being shoved down my throat in the game's opening scenes and exposition.

The two characters you mentioned were my friend and I's favorites (not counting Sheena in all her curvaceous glory). So their respective shift in role and absence from the game was quite the personal blow as well.
-

Also, this is totally frivolous and random, but, at the beginning of the game, did anyone notice all the flashbacks Emil had of things that happened like five minutes ago? That was a fun little gem.

Dawn of the New World irks me. I waited over a year for this damn game to be released over here, and I am not pleased with what I've found. The new voice actors for the old cast are absolutely awful, and Emil and Marta are, well...painfully cliche. Emil makes Edge Maverick look like the very pinnacle of happiness by comparison, and Marta's clingy attitude is very, very annoying. I thought we'd gotten past the weak-willed dependant female sidekick in RPGs by now? I half expected her to break out into Disney-like song at points.

The only good characters in this game are the ones that aren't playable - I absolutely love love LOVE Tenebrae (he makes the skits worth watching, and then some) and as far as I'm concerned Decus and Alice should be the main characters, not Emil and Marta. Decus has an amusing personality that hides quite an intellectual individual (he reminds me of Zelos in the original, only slightly less effeminate, and not quite so shallow) and Alice has an interesting backstory, which is sadly moved to a sideplot.

And, well, what can I say about monster recruiting? That is sheer LAZINESS. Instead of putting in some proper, original characters, they add the ability to use monsters. Then, to top it all off, they cap the original characters' levels. Urgh.

Tales of Vesperia was a massive disappointment to me, but at least it could claim it had at least one good character (Rita) and a thoroughly solid battle system, even if the storyline was all over the place. The storyline in this game makes Vesperia look like a masterpiece by comparison.

Dawn of the New World is unneccessary and unworthy to be a sequel to Tales of Symphonia, which was my favourite game of all time until Star Ocean 4 came along. Its a low-budget cash-in which barely satisfies the demands of fanservice, let alone a score above a 5/10 in any review. I tried very, VERY hard to like it...

That's sad to hear, but not all that surprising. I mean, after all,
even in the very beginning of the introduction of Zelos' character, he was keeping tabs on Lloyd's group and leaking information to The Renegades and Cruxis.

That, and well, this game throws a veil of shadows over Lloyd's character, so it's not difficult imagine why he'd be playing a Kratos-esque role. :wacky:

dammit, i wonder if there's a ToS2 manga or something somewhere. Now I want to know the frickin' story D:

Well, wait, I might have worded that to give off the wrong idea. Zelos doesn't take on a Kratos role at all, actually (thank goodness). He remains himself all the way, and he actually displays very admirable qualities through his involvement in the plot.

When the "new gang" properly meets Zelos. They ask him where his "bastard" friend Lloyd is. This insult irritates Zelos, and he responds by telling them that he won't associate with anyone who looks for confrontation with his "bastard friend".

Later, Lloyd is accused of a terrible crime that's even personal to Zelos. He, however, stands by Lloyd and defends his name to Emil.

He's actually the only character who truly believes in Lloyd from the start.

He proves to be very perceptive, and loyal to a fault.

For his character, it was just his relative absence from the game that was a disappointed (albeit expected after you played through like ten minutes of the plot).

I'm sorry, I don't really understand what you're saying... You mean like, he's there in the party, but he's just quiet and not humorously obnoxious? :wacky:

In case you misunderstood, I meant like
comes and goes with helpful information now and then / helps out in an extremely critical situation. not playing a traitor to two sides, following the faction that he feels he can place his faith in.

Well see--and I hope I'm not spoiling anything for you, but this is just a gameplay aspect--there really is no "party" to have fixated outside of the three main characters of the game (one of which doesn't fight). You kind of recruit the characters of the past as you encounter them at various times. So in a sense, everyone comes and goes depending on what point in the game it is.

And as for the "quiet and not humorously obnoxious" thing, haha, no way. As soon as you meet him, he starts hitting on Marta. He's still the same old Zelos, everything about him. I just meant that, while maintaining those traits, he also proves to be a very insightful character too (just like he did in #1).

As for his "role", he kind of offers the same as the other characters - helping you out when you need it. But what sets him apart is, err, his logic compared to the others in the game. Also, I suppose he does get slightly more involved in the plot than most of the other ToS throwbacks.

Sorry for the confusion.
