I think it's probably fair to say that this is one of the most anticipated films of the year. It's one of the best novels of the 20th century, it's also one of the best American novels. It doesn't have, I don't think, a definitive film version that other movies based on books have to contend with. It's also an interesting time to make it, we're in recession and the book is set in one of the most opulent eras of all time.

Is anyone here loking forward to it?
 
i've been very impressed by the trailers so far, and leonardo di capri is one of the most bankable stars of the modern age, so it's almost certain to be a great film. i like how they're trying to market a more mature themed film to a younger audience. i think from the trailers, the soundtrack is going to be quite iconic for the film and i like the clash of modern music in a film set in the 20s. my only problem is that i can't see any reason for making it in 3d. i'm not sure if it's been shot in 3d or is being converted in post, but i suppose it has the potential to surprise everyone in that respect
 
Very much so.

I've seen the 1974 film take on the book; I distinctly remember Mia Farrow as Daisy in that version. I appreciated it and the fact that it kept itself faithful to the source material, though I agree with the critics that it sort of flatlined for most of it with the dryness and a weak representation of the atmosphere of the jazz age. I'm eager to see how this compares with its earlier incarnation(s).

I'm quite happy with how the trailers look - and how they sound, hi, Lana - and not having kept up to date with the production, I was surprised to see that Carey Mulligan as Daisy. I wasn't expecting an English actress to fill in that role. Mia Farrow never raised the bar much in the 1974 version, so I'm interested to see how Pride and Prejudice's Kitty Bennet delivers. And so far I think I prefer this "Gatsby? What Gatsby" line delivery, so it seems promising.
 
I do love Baz Luhrmann's first three films, and I hope he can return to that sort of form with this. And DiCaprio is usually good value too. But I do worry that film adaptations of really classic novels tend to have a spotty track record as they often feel crushed by the weight of the source material (Lord of the Rings and To Kill A Mockingbird, to name but two, prove it can be done to be fair).

One thing's for sure, definitely won't be seeing it in 3D!
 
With the cast they have set up, I think that it can be one of the best films of the year, (if not the decade.) DiCaprio is an amazing actor and Maguire also can be great.

I think the problem this film might have is that those that haven't read the book but will see the movie (which let us admit it, there will be many who will,) Are going expect a more action film than it should be, (I am going assume that it is going stay true to the book, although I know Luhrmann did take his own twist on the Romeo and Juliet play.)

But really with the cast they have set up, and with how amazing the book it, I do believe that this can and will win many awards around the world.

I also am very excited to see this movie the most this year (if I see anything in theaters this will be it.) It might not be the top selling movie of the year, but I do believe that it can be one of the top 3 of the year.
 
I have not read the book, so I can tell you that after seeing the trailer I am really looking forward to the action. My main question is will I be able to go to the bathroom in the lull between Leo scalping terrorists or is it just non-stop high octane excitement? Like Pooley, I thought having modern music playing for the trailer was incredibly well done and it definitely piqued my interest in the film.
 
I do not know much about the book at all but it has Leonardo DiCaprio in it and the trailers look great and it's getting a lot of hype so I can't wait to see it in the cinemas.

Plus it's filmed in Australia and directed by an Australian so ofc it is going to be amazing.
 
When I was in school I never even finished the book and I slept through the movie it was so effing boring.

But this version with Leo looks a lot more intriguing and maybe because I am a few years older now (than when I first saw the original movie and read some of the book) I may enjoy it more.

The trailers definitely look awesome so I'm hoping for the best.
 
I do like Baz Luhrman a lot, just not when he takes on classic novels/plays. His Romeo&Juliette was atrocious to say the least so I am a litlle conflicted about seeing this movie, as I am a big fan of Fitzgerald's writing. Probably will go see it, as Baz and Carrey Mulligan were so enthusiastic about the movie when they appeared on the Graham Norton Show a couple weeks back.

The trailer and the soundtrack have kept my expectations very low though...
 
They were hardly going to go on a chatshow to slate their own film now. Personally, I loved his version of Romeo and Juliet.
 
i heard it murdered the book. some people i've spoken to that have read the book say it's pretty dull when comparing it to the book. i myself have never read the book and i'm not sure if this will be good or not. i think the film looks beautiful and leo and tobey are always brilliant. but so far im not sure if i should waste money on seeing it in theaters. :hmmm:

Didn't insinuate that anyone would, was merely pointing out that their enthusiastic performance on Graham Norton had changed my intentions and that it was that appearance that made me wanna go see the movie.

From what my old English-lit prof told me, the movie is entertaining mostly if you don't somewhat trashy films and don't know the book. If you do know you probably find a lot to criticize, like with pretty much every movie adaption.
 
Luhrmann's Romeo and Juliet is probably the most irreverent and stupid version of Shakespeare there has been. But it's quite good fun, and it's not like Romeo and Juliet is one of his better tragedies.
I think it was a fairly odd decision to use Jay-Z for the soundtrack, as there's not much that could have been more jarring.

I spoke to someone at work today about this. She said that she has read the book over 10 times and last night she went and saw the movie.
She told me she can't understand the hate the movie is getting because it follows the book really well.
 
i was a bit disappointed with it, after having fairly high expectations. i found the first half of the film, where it showed off the whole 20s vibe and the excess of the age, much more interesting than the second, when it became a love story. i thought after gatsby met daisy again, it could have been set anywhere and at any time. it still isn't terrible, but only a little better than average.

I actually can't wrap my head around why anyone would dislike this movie besides maybe the music but I thought the music was good. I enjoyed hearing modern songs done in an oldschool way. I think it was meant to represent how hip and new old jazz was back in the day (I read that somewhere). The way the movie was shot was really nice, the colours and the costumes and the acting were all really good. Leo and Toby were the best for me.

You're upset at it becoming a love story but that is what it was the whole time.... >_>
 
i don't care about the change in the story, knew about that going into it. i just didn't care about the characters once it reached that point, and the film seemed to lose heart. i think what killed it for me was when you're told the truth about gatsby's past so early in the film. for me that was what was interesting, and revealing that so early on left a lot to be desired with what followed. the best parts of the film were when you saw the parties and the lifestyle of the 1920s, which you lost later in the film when it became a love story, which could have been taking place in the modern age or even the future for what it was worth.

omg! so he did that with the music?? :jess: like what he did with romeo + juliet? :jess: I wasn't sure he'd keep his regular style (of music) but he did, so that's good at least. i always loved when he did that, it's unique and fun.

I will wait for it to come out on tv/dvd, though. im just too empty pocket to go and watcha film right now on the big screen.

I can't remember his version of Romeo and Juliet very well even though I've seen it twice :( But I am pretty sure he did something similar with the music. It was quite a mixture. Some scenes had oldish songs in it, some had new songs and then others had hew songs changed to sound old. I though it was good and made things like the party scenes feel extra exciting. I don't even like lady gaga, kanye west and Beyonce but I enjoyed the way he hand their songs altered to suit the movie.

It's a shame you can't see it at the cinema, the way it is filmed is really nice and looks really good on the big screen but I am sure it'll look just as great in dvd/bluray quality!
