Star Ocean and Valkyrie Profile developer tri-Ace is showing off its latest physically-based rendering technology. The Tokyo-based developer today launched a new section on its “Research and Development Department” website, where they released a video of their new technology in motion, complete with 720p screen captures.
The demo is running in real-time on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, at a steady 30Hz in 720p. It uses “real-time lighting and shadowing”, emphasizing that does not utilize baked light maps. Its key features are “physically-based shading models, physically-based lighting and image-based global illumination”.

The technology can be read about more in-depth here. See it in action below. Take notice of the Fayt and Edge action figure and poster cameos, characters from Star Ocean: Till The End of Time and Star Ocean: The Last Hope, respectively. This ‘tech demo’ looks like it can be a trailer for a new Star Ocean, itself, which wouldn’t be highly unlikely.

I saw a Fayt and Maverick figurines :woo:

Whatever this is, they better not rush and release sooner than it should. I wouldn't want to play a half ass game by tri-ace.

Although, if this is another Star Ocean, most likely the characters are gonna have annoying voices, as always.

The Fayt and Edge figures could be a sign - perhaps they have a fifth Star Ocean unannounced over in Japan, explaining also where they've been since releasing The Last Hope International and Resonance of Fate. I know it's just a tech demo which isn't supposed to signify an actual game in development, but it would still be odd if the next Star Ocean is to be similar to this in visuals. It's normally anime-esque, and the change to Mass Effect-like space marines (despite how nice the outfits are though!) and all the brown added in would be totally odd, but it could work.

Can't wait to see what they're cooking up next though -
please be Valkyrie Profile 3: Hrist or something
! Visually it's gorgeous, especially with that lighting and movement.

god that new graphics are pretty amazing.... and they can get these graphics out of the ps3 and xbox... then god this is why we don't need new consoles yet

I for one think it could be Star Ocean related because of the Edge and Fayt figurines. It is pretty much a tech demo showcasing a hint. The visuals are very beautiful and I do think A new Star Ocean can work with these even if the space suit designs look totally different. Valkyrie Profile III really needs to get announced though so I would like either that or a new Star Ocean. So to say.. when I first saw this a few days ago I sorta went nuts because it is a hint of a new Star Ocean game.

So, what's the big deal with this? It just looks like Mass Effect graphics. Nothing special if you ask me. These developers need to put the graphical enhancements aside and maybe try focus on, I don't know, MAKING GAMES THAT ARE GOOD. I played the last Star Ocean and it was garbage. New graphics make look nice but are pointless if the game sucks.

-sigh- And I used to have some respect for Tri-Ace in the past.

Sounds like you haven't even given any of their games a chance.

You've probably just played the game for 10 mins and then never touched it again. Tri-Ace is one of the more successful VG corps standing behind Square Enix. If anything, they know how to make a good game with good graphics.

Don't jump to conclusions boyo

Lets see...

Star Ocean 1 on the SNES, beat it.
Star Ocean 2nd Story on the PS1, beat it.
Valkyrie Profile on the PS1, beat it.

These games were great and made me respect Tri-Ace.

Star Ocean Till the End of Time on the PS2, beat it.
Star Ocean The Last Hope on the XBOX 360, I'm on the final planet.

These games looked great, but are not up to Tri-Ace's previous installments. They just aren't as good. In fact, Tri-Ace hasn't really come out with anything really epic since the PS1 days.

Sarcasm: ON
Yes, I won't jump to conclusions! I'm just a guy who has no idea what he's talking about! Star Ocean isn't one of my favorite RPG series at all. Gee, thanks for putting me in check.
Sarcasm: OFF

:holyshit:

How about you don't jump to conclusions, kiddo.

:holyshit:

Tri-Ace's gone down the drain for a Star Ocean addict.

tsk tsk.

Yes! Thanks for clarifying my point! :yay:

It's cool that companies and developers want to show off their latest advances in technology. I'm all for it. But it don't mean jack unless the game is good. Though it easy to get brainwashed by shiny objects and special effects, we should all remember that effects alone don't make a game. So when a company makes a video like this, for example, Tri-Ace, it's good to remember that their latest installments were not as great as their old school games and be skeptical. This makes the let down not as bad if the game is crap, but makes the surprise even better if it is not.

As a question about the video: Does the setting look like the Earth in the past from Star Ocean: The Last Hope? The area where they go into the secret military bunker and find Meracle.

I think you guys are missing the point ..aparantly they are showing off their technology when it comes to:
LIGHTING/SHADING/ILLUMINATION ETC...

Not really graphics or CGI...cause this is not ingame however they would implement it and tht would be awesome.

Also I think that guy has the weirdest nose ever but I really like that female char..The lighting in the room is superb and those two fans above the window, man I like this tech demo.

They have really good space aged technology (thats my name for it) I like how futurisitic they are in their designs, games, etc Star ocean was really good futuristic game I loved, and hope to see them make another game based off of it or used as a reference.

They might be trying to go in a different direction as far as outfits are concern, Mostly all of the stuff they make looks like that, I just hope whatever their gonna be making next they keep the futuristic environments the same. The graphics on the characters in those pics are in a class of their own if you ask me. If I had to they would come somewhat close to that knew game I keep seeing the commercial for I forgot the name? But those are realy great graphics.
