Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has admitted that Final Fantasy XIII wasn't perfect, and that certain elements could have been improved. Of course, when you've sold insane amounts of a game already, it's pretty easy to get critical. Wada blames development costs for the game's downsides.

"I believe this is a well done game, however there are points we could improve on," he confesses. "In order to realize those improvements we would have to incur more development costs. Therefore, I would rather not elaborate on that."

It's a shame Wada won't be drawn on pointing out some of the flaws. It's obvious by now that I wasn't a fan of the game, despite being a lover of Final Fantasy, and I know for a fact that I am not alone in my thinking. I think the major issue wasn't so much the high cost as the wrongful allocation of budget. So much money spent on graphics, seemingly none on a script editor.

Fortunately, there are plenty more JRPGs coming this year to fill the gap. Ironically, they're all on Wii, where providing ludicrously opulent graphics won't be a concern. From where I'm standing, that's only a good thing.

Although this is not really news (if you've actually spent 20+ hours playing the game), it's hilarious that Wada would say something that stupid.

He just told fans that he deliberately sold us a flaming pile of shit.

My favourite game in the world FFX, could be improved in some ways. Did people expect this to be perfect? Does anyone in the world think this game is perfect?

Oh wow, didn't think it was possible to over-read something THAT much. Seriously, don't be so stupid.

It's not a big surprise, reading many reviews from top gaming sites as being 'average' or 'mediocre' and 'very linear'. Most didn't rate high in Gameplay at all, but music and graphics got the best ratings. I would imagine that SE finally stepped back and looked at (at least the American reviews) the reviews and thought 'man, we could have done so much better'. It seems they catered to the JPN market better than the American market, although stick the name 'Final Fantasy' on anything over there and it's sure to be a hit. (or so I'm told)

Hey here's a thought

Why dont you stfu? If I wanted your opinion, I'd have asked for it. :monster:

just because you think mediocrity is an "acquired taste" does not mean it suits everyone. Pull your head out of your ass.

Drop it guys, if you must continue, please do it off the forums or via PM.

All games can be improved, but to say it would have cost too much to do so...that's a pretty stupid excuse. Still, I liked XIII just the way it is, so I'm not sure how it could have been improved xD

I must be honest. I didnt like ff13 all that much, hated the game play. Hated the way you could only control one characters actions. The Graphics were nice yes. But I just couldnt get over the way the game played out.. Now the switching between classes was nice I did like that.

He didn't want to "elaborate" on what kind of improvements he had in mind? Honestly - what a pointlessly vague statement. No game is perfect. FFXIII is certainly not a perfect game (I like it - it just isn't incredible). At least give us some reasons why it wasn't perfect, Wada. Without them, your argument goes nowhere.

As for the huge development costs - I agree - much of it goes to the CGI visuals. If they cut those down a bit, they could have had more funds to "realize those improvements".

imo the flaws were little development for most of the characters, such as jill nabaat, minor characters dont make a 2nd or at least a 3rd appearance, such as hopes dad. There should have been more history for the characters, not a big flaw but it would be intresting of course.

Not necessarily. Without realizing what you did wrong, how can you improve the next time?

Every game developer, no matter how mind-blowingly awesome the game they developed is, has no choice but to find the flaws in their game.

Haha... could of been improved, personally im pissed off.

I completed the game and got all achievements within 65 hours... I could swear in an interview they said it would take a 'infinite amount of time'

Bull#@!! in my opinion.

could of improved on EVERYTHING, apart from the graphics.

didnt SE stated from the beginning they would make FF13 much quicker compared to older titles? I think thats what caused the game to be so little in substance. they focused too much on graphics, which is nice but not necessary IMO.

Wada doesnt need to elaborate, because I think the downfalls are already quite clear to have noticed.
