Well I looked for another thread like this one, but I never did find one. After talking on the SB, I might as well throw it down here. Some of you might be a bit young for this one, but for those that aren't... here are a few questions regarding the subject.

(this is in debate forum, because I could see where this could start an annoyance)

1) Have you ever smoked? (reasons for doing so or not doing so)

2A) Have you smoked daily and if so how many?

2B) Have you ever tried to quit after smoking daily?

2C) What was the longest you quit, if so?

I'll go first, since I've admitted to smoking, and yes I still smoke daily.. so here.

1) Yes, as said above. When I was 9 years old my old friend and I snuck a Virginia Slim (His mom's) out into the backyard and smoked. We were curious, and back when I was really young I smoked twigs and stuff with the neighbors thinking we were so cool. Yes, I probably regret it today, but yea.

2A) Yes, as said above. I used to smoke on and off, partly from high school into college. The first age I inhaled was 13, and ever since then I smoked on occasion. I smoked when I drank later on, but some days I woke up and smoked first thing.

2B) Ugh, yea I've tried, but honestly my addiction gets the best out of me every time. I used to smoke near a pack every day, but then cut down at whim. I played a lot of sports including running cross country, which amazed me that they never affected my long distance running. I am very ashamed of smoking sometimes, but other times I could care the hell less. I do have a family history of lunge cancer on both sides, but that wasn't the reason I've been wanting to quit. I just hate having an addictive personality (except for alcohol). I want to know I can quit whenever I want, but lately I dunno. The girlfriend even picked up smoking because of me, in which I hang my head every day for. Not only is it bad for your health but in America the taxes are sky rocketing as of April 1st. These days I have cut back to 2-5 cigarettes but even now one sounds good. Yea, call me bad.. call me whatever, but like I said, once your hooked.. ugh.

3C) The longest I ever quit was 4 months. During those 4 months I felt refreshed, never tired, bounce off the walls with energy and I worked out till I got reinjured. I may use smoking as a crutch every now and again but it does make me a less stressed out individual. It also makes head aches go away... I'm pathetic right? Hey.. but that's it for me.

I've smoked once or twice while drunk. It's not something I particularly enjoy but it's not a cardinal sin to me, so I don't mind doing it once in awhile. I prefer cigars to cigarettes but I'll smoke either if it's only once in awhile. I've never smoked on a daily basis or been addicted.

1) Have you ever smoked? (reasons for doing so or not doing so)

Yes

2A) Have you smoked daily and if so how many?

Yes, never anything alot though, just like 5 or so, I was never a heavy smoker - although I was a social smoker so if Id be out on the piss, Id smoke more xD

2B) Have you ever tried to quit after smoking daily?

Yes, several times, I always manage to quit easily, but then they kinda sneak back in my life, a cheeky drag here, a cheeky drag there...getting more and more frequent til Im back to squarte one *sigh*

2C) What was the longest you quit, if so?

About 2 years I think, Ive NO idea why I started smoking again after that but I did, I always seem to start crumbling after a few months though

Its a filthy fucking habit, should never of even tried in the first place, its smelly and fucks your breathing up, well not worth the hassle, but alas, I still do it coz Im a tit xD

No I've never smoked, and I don't plan to. The cigarette smoke literally makes me sick. That's not even mentioning the multitude of people I've known that smoked themselves into an early grave.

I think it's something that should never have been tried by anyone, considering the consequences you'll take health-wise.

I don't mind other people smoking, it's their body, they can trash it all they want. And it's not like the people who do smoke are any different than people who don't, but if they're making other people second hand smoke then I have a problem.
Unless someone wants to second hand smoke, they shouldn't have to go through it.

That's my two cents on smoking; Haven't tried it, and if I have anything to say about it I never will.

I did for a while, I quit for someone I loved (like my little sister) as a kid. Recently I have started again, I know its not good for me, and its been making me (more) sick latley. But my current girlfriend smokes with me, so its hard for me to stop. I guess it should be made easy for me since my mom just quit smoking 10 days ago.

2A) Have you smoked daily and if so how many?
I try and not do so much, by myself I smoke around 5 sigs a day. I have school I think that keeps the number relativly low.

2B) Have you ever tried to quit after smoking daily?
I had quit for 4 years. But I started again after this party I went to where I smoked around 3/4 a pack in 5 hours.

2C) What was the longest you quit, if so?
4 years, for someone I cared about alot.

I do smoke 10 a day roughly. Just fyi, i get asked all the time why i dont quit and the reason is simple, i dont want to. I enjoy a cigarette its that simple. Smokers can moan and moan about bein addicted but they have the power to quit, they just dont want to enough. Ive smoked since i was 16 roughly so thats like 3 years now =/ i know its bad for me but until i actually want to quit im not goin to, its simple as that really.

We have a smoking ban over here which prevents people from smoking in public buildings and in pubs etc.....best thing ever implemented. It must have been shit for non smokers to be stuck in a club surrouded by people smoking, i wouldnt even like that, sounds weird but i hate the smell of other people smoking. When i have a fag at work il stand outside away from the others.

I dont expect to be judged for smoking, its my choice innit? If you dont like it i understand but i dont expect to get hassle for it unless of course im smoking somewhere i shouldnt be, then its all good :monster:

I don't smoke tobacco unless in a spliff, which these days I am very partial too quite often as a lot of you will know. I don't touch it if it's not mixed with the green stuff however.

Like many kid's I curiously took up smoking at School but it didn't last long. It just wasn't my scene. I didn't like the smell, the coughs it brought, the others who smoked were wankers and ultimatly (and probably the reason im still mostly a non-smoker to this day) I just couldn't afford the money to spend on it if I got addicted. Since deciding to give smoking the middle-finger I think I've had about 3 tobacco only smokes and these would have been when I was drunk and incredibly stressed.

I don't smoke, and I've never tried it either because it just doesn't appeal to me at all, I don't see the point. Waste of money and health. My dad's smoked around me for as long as I can remember and I've always hated it, I have crap lungs now.

I don't have anything against people smoking of course, that's their choice. It really annoys me when self-righteous pricks preach to smokers about why they should quit though. I'm sure they know the dangers already but they obviously don't care that much or else they wouldn't smoke. You don't see smokers telling THEM to stop drinking or eating junk food or do more exercise, do you.
Saying that, it does annoy me when people smoke around others without bothering to ask if they mind, I think that's incredibly selfish. Like we want to breathe in your poison air. As laguna said, the ban of smoking in public places is probably one of the best things the Government has actually done for us.

Well these questions are very valid, I am a smoker, i have been smoking 20 a day for like 2 years and i have infact tried quitting, but i can't. the longest i managed to go without a fag was 1 week (7 days) but a series of events caused my stress levels to triple, and with the lack of nicotine in my system i was angry all the time, so i began smoking again, to stop myself doing something stupid

How do you try quitting? Surely you either do it or you dont?
You can quit if you want, all you have to do is not smoke=/
Of course your gonna need willpower, but we all have that in us its just a matter of wanting to use it or not.

Also @vladislak - How do you make someone second hand smoke? Tie them to a wall and blow it in their face. I laughed at that part of your post xD

Circumstances could govern differently. It's very possible to quit for a week, then have your stress raised a considerable amount and not beable to cope without nicotine.

I'm a smoker. I'm contemplating quitting. Been smoking since i was 14. I tried quitting recently, like cold turkey quitting. Started throwing up alot and i was back on 2 or 3 cigs a day. So i got back on it.

Stopping smoking for a week isnt quittin, its simply taking a break. Quittin is, and should be for good.
Also youv been smoking roughly the same amount of time as me and although ive never even considered quitting, iv been in situations where unfortunately iv not had a smoke for well over a week. And ive never had voilent sickness or anything. I dont know if this difers person to person, but ive never known anyone to have bad sickness after quittin. Theyr appetite picks up but constantly bein sick, ive never heard of that.

It happens. Trust me, it does. It might be because i could have smoked more per day then you do. I'm not entirely sure though.

As for the whole break thing. He atleast managed that long. He now has a goal to work towards, which is longer than a week. Baby steps. All im going to say.

I work with a man who smoked rolling tobacco, he would easily go through 40 in the 8 hours of working time a day. When he quit he just stopped altogether, he had tried the light approach of trying to cut down his intake less and less every week. It never worked for him and ive seen a lot of people try this method and fail. Im saying if your gonna quit then QUIT. I dont think stopping for a week then starting again is anything to be proud of tbqh.
Your always gonna have a goal to work towards, that goal is....not having a cigarette again. Now aint that a better goal than trying to cut down little by little?

Good for him. What might work for some might not for others. And yes, it is better to just quit overall, but sometimes it's harder than that. Quitting little by little is better than just saying fuck it and giving up altogether.

You have really contradicted yourself there
Why is it better???
Surely its worse for you health wise no? I mean you will be intaking more nicotine and tar than you would be if you just stopped in the first place.

What i meant was if someone tries to quit altogether and fails, its possible they won't attempt to trey and quit again. Im which case quitting little by little is better than not making any progress at all.

It does differ from person to person depending on how much your body relies on it, for a number of reasons. You may smoke alot more than another person but maybe their body relies on it more so when they go without for a period of time the consequences will be harder than if you did yourself.

Lemmy of Motorhead fame has been smoking so much over the years that if he stoped now it would probably do more harm than good, infact he's been warned by his doctor that if he stops his diet that consists of mostly fags and whisky he could die. But otherwise he is absolutly fine.

Yup. Also if someones like 40 or 50 and they've been smoking for around 20 yrs, and just up and quit. They can die. It'd be like losing too much weight at once. It'd be too much of a change for the human body to handle.

I dunno, to me someone who cant/wont quit altogether are destined to fail when it comes to the cutting down approach. Iv seen it happen a lot and very often. I know a lot of people like to try the patches from the doctors, im not sure if theyre free or cost money but either way i hear theyre not that effective in reducing cravings, same goes for the chewing gum ive heard. Its all willpower and the desire to stop at the end of the day i think.
