Vets say it’s impossible - but to Chinese farmer Liu Naiying his birth is a miracle. For Mr Liu insists one of his sheep has given birth to a dog The 'puppy' has wool like a lamb but its mouth, nose, eyes, paws and tail look more like a dog's.

His 'sheep dog' even plays like a hound. The birth has prompted thousands to flock to his farm in Shaanxi Province to see for themselves. Mr Liu told how he found the unusual baby animal shortly after it was born in one of his fields. ‘I was herding the sheep, and saw a sheep licking her newborn lamb on the grassland. The lamb was still wet,’ he said. ‘When I went up close to check on the lamb I was shocked because it looked so weird, like a cross between a sheep and a dog.

‘I was a bit frightened, as I've been raising sheep for 20 years and had never seen such a creature.’ Yue Guozhang, a researcher at Xi'an City Animal Husbandry Technology Centre, said sheep and dogs were different species. ‘It's not possible that a sheep could become pregnant with a puppy,’ he said. ‘It's likely that this is just an abnormal lamb.’

That's pretty crazy. I'm curious as to how that happened. I would like to think it's just a deformed sheep. That dude seriously needs to breed that thing to see if it can have (or it's mate can have) puppies that look like it.

Wow, that's so odd It is cute though. I think it looks more like a dog than a sheep though, the nose definitely looks like a dog's nose And I'm suspicious about what the scientist said, there are plenty of deformed livestock that don't resemble other species, they usually just look like a deformed livestock animal. This looks too much like a dog for it to be a weird birth defect IMO.

You can clearly see its canine features more than anything else, so if it is a lamb, but 'deformed' in a way, it really wouldn't make much sense anyway. As the guy said so himself, they are of different species so that casts some doubt over the two main ideas at the moment, but I'm willing to accept that there are things that biological science just hasn't discovered yet. That's nature for you - despite how much science casts light on it, it continues to astonish and surprise us in pleasant ways. The little puppy-lamb is just adorable, so I wish it all the best.

Well, Trans-species embryo transplantation is possible, so he could have done that with the sheep and the dog.

Its happened with many others too, like the Pumapard, Savannah and even the Sheep–goat chimera.

I saw this on the news today Its freaking adorable.. though I do find it kind of creepy that a dog may have mated with a sheep to create it

It might even be a hoax and its just a fluffy dog that happens to look like a sheep... but either way, it's still adorable

Well, the man could have done a Trans-Species embryo transplantation instead of a dog mating with a sheep. It entirely possible.

Yea, it could be a hoax, but I have never seen a breed of dog like this at all. It really does have sheep fur and the nose and ears have never been seen (at least after looking at so many dog breeds) in dogs alone.

The closest breed I could find that may have created this Shuppy, is the
Parson Russell Terrier (Rough).

The Shuppy sorta looks like this Russel Terrier, has similar (though obviously not the same) hair. But the nose, snout, tail and ears are a lot different. So maybe this is just a Terrier mixed with another dog.

well I would have believed something like that if the man didn't seem so shocked at it being born as a dog/sheep.

The article makes it sound like one day he woke up and there was a baby shuppy and he has no idea how it happened kinda thing.

I'd assume if he did some kind of embryo transplant thing he would have known something like this would have happened.

But I am a skeptic because of all the hoaxes you hear, it could be true and if it is then thats really awesome

and hey, they can breed lions with tigers and they're different animals

Well, he could have done the transplant and then faked his surprise so he and his farm would get publicity.

But I wouldn't be surprised if this happened in China. I was watching a show a few weeks ago about Northern China (near Hothot, as well as east and west of that) where Dwarf Blue Sheep were so deformed that no longer resemble a Dwarf Blue Sheep, so this could be a rare deformity. But, I believe they even found a Dwarf Blue Sheep had mated with a Chiru as well.

Wow, this is quite unreal. I do wonder if they'll do any tests to prove this is actually true because people can claim this happened, yet there needs to be proof to back this up. As for the shuppy, it's adorable and you can tell it looks more like a dog than sheep.

But that is such a cute dog! They should find out if the dog can mate or not. That will answer some questions.

That totally looks like a dog in the nose and eyes. I think it's totally possible.

The image there proves it in my opinion. I really don't believe that the puppy in question could just be an abnormal sheep.

I am not a Shu-ppy! ... Oh, Nevermind! What is this diabolical creation? Half sheep/half dog and now I'm thinking what's next. Half Kitten/Half Cow?

Though I will say, pretty damn cute. I wonder if they can sheered like a normal sheep, or taste like delicious Lamb chops.

My first thought is that an alien was all should I be a sheep or a dog while I spy on this farmer and then it hit the thing... Why not be both at the same time! Then the world was taken over by half dog half sheep aliens with laser guns.

In reality anything is possible so this is either a hoax or its not but either way the thing is really cute and if he can breed a species of dog sheep with fur that herd themselves and are as loyal is dogs that cant be a bad thing.

Though if the next thing like this to be posted is a cat mixed with a dog then we should all proceed to our nearest shelters and wait for the end to come.
