Katyusha
The girl, who introduced herself, somewhat quietly, as Lily grabbed Katyusha’s hand. At first, she was surprised, but then she realized that she actually appreciated it. Lily seemed to be rather thoughtful, and it was nice that she was willing to lead the way. Sure, Katyusha could see, but Lily didn’t know that… she couldn’t know that. What would Lily think if she suddenly found out that she could see? Would she be angry? Or would she be curious? Or would she simply not care? Either way it went, it was probably for the best that Lily never knew.
One little white lie wouldn’t hurt anyone… would it? “Found one,” she said. Katyusha saw it too. A car shaped outline in the distance. Lily started walking towards the cab, pulling Katyusha behind her. It was a very nice change in pace as far as she was concerned. If she were still completely in the dark, she would take ages crossing the street, and even with her stunted form of sight, she couldn’t see the words on the cab, or the paint.
If it weren’t for Lily, she would have never even known there was a cab around. She would have just seen a car that looked like every other car. As they made it to the cab, Katyusha jumped the gun and opened the door. She completely forgot, yet again, that she wasn’t supposed to be doing things for herself. Hopefully, Lily didn’t pay it any mind. However, the tricky part was yet to come. Once she stepped for inside the cab, her sight would be gone again.
Technically, steel was made of earth… but Katyusha couldn’t use it to see. Her theory was that it was far too… diluted and impure. Nevertheless, she was going to have to get in. She slowly sat in the cab and scooted over. Her vision went off like someone turned off a light. Suddenly, she was feeling around and trying to make sure she had her bearings correct. She scooted over to ensure that Lily could sit down next to her in the back.
Katyusha couldn’t help but continue to feel around. She had a horrid habit of whispering the names of things she was touching as she touched them. “This is… the front seat. And that is the arm rest. This here is the… door handle… I think…”, she whispered. Her hands drifted to things around her as she tried to make out what they were, what they did, and what they were called. She touched the glass on the window, “glass… I think.” Even with her sight she couldn’t see glass. It made things difficult, especially if there was a sliding glass door. Sight or not, she always bumped into them.
Finally getting her bearings, she smiled. “Sorry about that, I’ve got to feel my way around things,” she laughed nervously. Katyusha told the cab driver her address and then turned to Lily. “Lily is a very pretty name, if you don’t mind me saying.”
