Eighties pop singer Rick Astley has become the surprise contender for best act ever at this year's MTV Europe Music Awards in Liverpool.

The star, who has never been nominated in the history of the event, is up against U2, Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera, Green Day and Tokio Hotel.

The winner, chosen by fans online, will be unveiled at the show on 6 November.

Astley returned to prominence this year when internet users were "tricked" into watching the video of his biggest hit.

A craze called "Rickrolling" saw web users unwittingly follow links to Astley's videos. It led to millions of plays of Astley's song Never Gonna Give You Up, which reached number one in the UK in 1987.

It went on to become a number one hit in 15 other countries.

"Rick's fans have obviously decided that he deserves recognition as a pop icon and no doubt they are determined to make sure he wins on the night," said the award show's producer Richard Godfrey.

Madonna is up for the video star category with 4 Minutes - the only nomination she has received this year.

The 50-year-old pop star will battle it out with 30 Seconds to Mars, Santogold, Weezer and Snoop Dogg, who hosted the ceremony last year.

What do you think? It's pretty hilarious that it's no wonder that he thinks it's a joke. Still could be.

I heard this on the radio before it just made me lol because all I thought of was being rick roll'd to the highest of standards xD

I'm suprised the record company hasn't reissued the song as a single due to all the publicity 'ol Rick is getting from this Rick Roll buisness. To be honest I've heard that song so much over the past year or something that its gotten in my head and I've started kinda likeing it.

I didn't just say that surely.

lol. This is great. I hadn't heard about him being nominated until now... So I had to do a little more research. Searched the net and found this... :P

(Follow link above for those who haven't realised that "this" leads to a link).

Britney Spears? Tokio Hotel? Christina Aguilera? They're all terrible. D: Why have they been nominated? U2 are the only decent artist on that shortlist.

You were seriously expecting a list of decent nominees? It's the MTV Europe Music Awards, they're seldom any good in having dceent acts win, and any award where the public votes is usually rubbish.

I prefer the European Awards to the ones in America, they snub most of our acts over there, anyway.

Rick should soo win. He's the only one out of that group who actually has talent, in my opinion. Rickrolling is what got him re-noticed, but the prank actually kicked off a lot of new fans. Some people are just voting for the lulz, but a lot of people are serious about having him win. He's a really good singer, and although a lot of his songs are meaningless (he even said so himself), they're very catchy. The song that represents him is no doubt corny, but in some weired way, also addictive and catchy as well. It's the rebirth of a classic.

Rick has definitely won. The Awards were about a week ago and he actually won! Now that, my friends, really is the ultimate rickroll.

That really is the ultimate Rick Roll. Just thinking about the amount of times I've been Rick rolled, I remember I once got rick rolled 6 times in a row while looking for some footage of the Olympics.
