So, I've accumulated a little money in recent months, and I'm wondering what to spend it on. I could buy a PS3 and preorder Final Fantasy XIII, or I can buy a computer/laptop, and have unlimited internet as we have gotten broadband at long last. The question is, which? :gonk: I know that if I buy the PS3 I'll quickly get bored again after finishing Final Fantasy XIII. And if I buy a computer I'll be left behind the craze. Either way it will be some time before I can buy the other. Opinions please.

Also, does a HD PS3 work on a non-HD ready TV?

My PS3 works on my crappy old portable, so yes, it does

As for what to buy, what are you using to get on the internet now? I'd be temoted to go with the laptop myself though, my PS3 is just sat here gathering dust, literally all Im waiting for is FFXIII and the novelty will soon wear off, I can see myself selling it once Ive beaten the game

I guess it depends on how munch you game and if you;re willing to wait for FFXIII or not. Also, you can get online with a PS3....

So, I dunno really, I guess it just depends on how munch use youre gunna get out of your PS3, if you're like me, I wouldn't bother, I could of spent that money on so much other stuff, but no, I had to be a nob and get a PS3 I don't use :mokken:

That's exactly my problem. I'm worried it will gather dust! I'm a pretty avid gamer, but a game will only last so long, and the ridiculous expensiveness of the games will mean long stretches of boredom in between. I'm using the library for internet currently.

If the main reason you are buying a PS3 is to get FFXIII, and no other reason, then this sounds like a waste of money, and a laptop would seem more sensible.

If however other games also have caught your eye, or like gaming and want a PS3 and intend to get several games other than FFXIII, then a PS3 can be a wise purchase. It depends on the types of games you like to play though. PS3 caters for a lot of what I love in games, and it might for you too, but it might not. You should check out what sort of games you are likely to buy / want to buy eventually for the PS3, and work out from this if it is going to be worth it or you to buy it.

It also depends on how well you are coping with the way things are in regards to internet connectivity. You say you are currently accessing the internet via the library computers... Are you ok with this? Or is it driving you nuts? If you really hate doing that, then perhaps get a laptop / computer as while the PS3 online is quite good, it is not ideal for browsing the internet (as is usually the case with a controller).

If you are fine with the way you get to the internet as it is, and would like to focus on playing games, then I guess look into the PS3, but make sure you find out what sort of games you'll be interested in (or ask for help on this if you aren't sure what you might or might not be). Buying one for the purpose of FFXIII is a very bad idea.

A regular PS3 works well on a SDTV, the graphics just don't look as sharp and the audio is not as good.

As far as your question though, do you have any other games you're interested in on the PS3? If so I would say go for it, that way whatever else you want to play + FFXIII and it should last you long enough until you buy a new laptop. If not then just buy a new laptop and wait for the PS3.

P.S. You have good taste in games, Persona 3 is awesome.

No, I do have several other games I would like. FFXIII is just the first Just to clear that up. I can survive in the library computers, but would be a lot more comfortable with home internet. What would you do in this situation is my question?

Even still it depends on how low on funds you will be afterwards. Though I did just remember something interesting. The PS3 has a web browser so if you already have internet then I would get that until you can afford a new laptop. You can't download anything and some websites won't work but you can post on most forums and watch videos on youtube, it is better than nothing. I would go for the PS3.

Seriously? :gasp: Thanks for that. I'm leaning towards a PS3 now. If I could come onto here and Youtube there'd be no question. Are you charged extra/seperately from broadband if using the PS3?

I think you will get more out of a laptop than a PS3 if you are having to use the library to get online... you can always save for a PS3 and get it at a later date. If I had to choose between my PS3 and my PC, my PC would win hands down everytime

And yes, the stupid games are stupidly expensive -__-

I probably wont even get XIII on release just because I cba and I have other things I wanna spend my money on

Nope

Actualy, he brings up a good point, when my pc died (aka: I hoovered it) I used the PS3 to get on the forums, though it did seem to run annoyingly slow <_<

By some time, I mean years. My p[arents will probably get me a laptop for uni, but not a PS3. A manipulative plan comes to mind. I'm still kind of leaning towards a PS3.

I guess in that case a PS3 might be better for you. A laptop's usefulness never goes away, but a PS3 will have a lifespan depending on the games that are being brought out. So if you wanted one it is best not to wait for years, as you are decreasing the time you'll be able to spend on it, and also missing many of the games you want to play.

And no, there are no charges at all for the internet on a PS3. You are only charged in playstation store for downloadable content.

Online play is also free, should you decide to play some online-enabled games.

Also I would like to say that if you do decide to go for the PS3 and use it as your primary source for the internet, I would highly recommend that you buy a keyboard for posting on forums. The on-screen keyboard is really bad. A regular USB keyboard costs 20$.

Ok. That sounds affordable. Should be able to rustle that up within a few weeks, or borrow someone's old keyboard.

I'd go for the laptop.

Just look at the options both offer you:

PS3:
- Final Fantasy XIII
- The built in webbrowser/mini-games/whatever stuff comes with a new PS3, which probably isn't something you'd buy a PS3 for.
- rental/borrowed games (until you can afford to buy more games)
- watching DVD's/ HD movies

Laptop:
- Computergames (even very old ones 'backwards compatability' ;-) )
- Internet with it's unlimited possibilites
- Making documents/doing homework
- Watching DVD's (and many other things you can download)
- E-mail/MSN/social networking
- and on top of that easy to move and place somewhere else

Maybe I forget some options, but these are the things I'd usually do with the machine.

I was in the same dilemma last year!

My old computer was virus ridden and I had it for around 6 years by that time.

Anyway, it was either a new computer for a $1400 or a PS3 that I had been dying to get.

But I knew that the PC was a far better choice. It can do much more than a PS3 can and even though the PS3 has the internet, I would imagine it would be annoying trying to type with the controllers? Or however you do it.

It beats having to go to the library. I've had to do it a couple of times when I've gone over my internet limit for the month and I hate it. There's ferals everywhere. <_<

Much rather have the privacy of being on the internet in my own home on my own computer.

You'd get less bored with a computer too in my opinion. There's much more to do on a computer.

That's my two cents worth.

i have to say the ps3 if you have serval games yo wont to play

[Mod Edit: Could you try to elaborate a little more next time please. =) One liners are usually classed as spam in post count sections. Thanks.]
