Playstation PSP 2

So this is Sony's new news about their upcoming handheld console. Let's hope that it doesn't turn out to be as bad as the PSPGO. As for a secound analog stick I agree with that. It would be a great idea because it will easier for us to play the games that we like with two anaolog sticks than with just one. I would like for the PSP 2 to have an improved sound system and a longer battery life.

i don't care about touch screens/pads or eye sensors or gimmicky 3d effects, just give me the damn second stick and i am sold.

I wonder if this is either the same thing, or very similar.. doesn't rly seem to warrant it's own thread, me thinks. PSP....and that's P for Phone.

It's hard to believe that what we're looking at is real -- but we assure you, the picture above is in fact the PlayStation Phone you've long been waiting for. As we reported back in August, the device you see is headed into the market soon, likely boasting Android 3.0 (aka Gingerbread), along with a custom Sony Marketplace which will allow you to purchase and download games designed for the new platform. The device snapped up top (and in our gallery below) is sporting a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8655 (a chip similar to the one found in the G2, but 200MHz faster), 512MB of RAM, 1GB of ROM, and the screen is in the range of 3.7 to 4.1 inches. Looking almost identical to the mockup we hit you with this summer, the handset does indeed have a long touchpad in the center which is apparently multitouch, and you can see in the photos that it's still bearing those familiar PlayStation shoulder buttons. For Sony buffs, you'll be interested to know that there's no Memory Stick slot here, but there is support for microSD cards.

The particular model in these shots is still in prototyping mode. As such, the unit doesn't have a custom skin (not even SE's Timescape design seen on the Xperia devices), and is said to be rather buggy. We're digging into more facts as we speak, but it's likely that much of what we reported earlier is still accurate, and though the device could still be headed for a 2010 release, 2011 is looking much more realistic. Still, there's a lot of time between now and the holidays... so keep your fingers crossed!

I had no idea that they were building a Playstation phone. It sounds like a logical route to take seeing as Sony Ericsson have already made phones based on Walkmans and Cybershot brands, but I didn't think they were interested in doing any Playstation phones with the PSP brand still around. At first glance, that prototype looks like the the PSPGo has a little brother and no analogue sticks do put me off.

Still, I can't imagine that this would be the PSP2 at all. I can't see Sony taking the route of Nokia with what they did with the unsuccessful Ngage phone several years back. I don't like the idea of mobile phone gaming anyway. Once this comes out, give it a short while and a new PS phone will come out with improved specs and capabilities while your older model is soon unable to play the latest released games. The games themselves will probably not even be that impressive either.

I'M CONFUSED.

Who actually wants to buy a phone/PSP? I mean, there had to have been demand, but I know I'm not getting it :/

I'm guessing it's not even gonna play UMDs - maybe Sony took apart all those Go! just lying around their warehouse and added a cellphone on to them :wacky:

I don't think it's about wanting one.. I think it's more about just branching out and trying to dominate one more field. Sony didn't have a huge go out in the field of Phones it was all about Apple.. Now they do. o_O

Having a UMD tray in there would make it a terribly bulky phone. :lew:

It sounds like this phone is completely independent to the PSP, but still wears the "Playstation" brand. Seeing as the article hints at how its operating system may be Android, it will inevitably be going to the Android store and download the games onto it, similar to the PSPGo.

I really don't think it's meant to be another serious handheld console or anything either. It just looks like Sony wants a crack at a market where the iPhone is doing spectacularly well as being a multimedia device with a large digital library of games.

That it is very weird indeed. A playstation Phone? Wow xD. I thought it was Psp II at first. I guess it is not though. I guess it will be just like the Iphone. Now why a playstation Phone though? :hmmm:

Note that this isn't necessarily the "Play Station Portable 2" since there is a possibility that there are two separate systems, in which one of them is the PSP2.

Ah, I see now. So its model name at the moment is the "Sony Ericsson Zeus" as opposed to a simple brand name of "Playstation". I see that the prototype(?) does not appear to have a "Playstation" logo on it similar to how Walkman and Cybershot Sony Ericsson phones have their logos included. That probably shows that Sony is (still) hesitant in using their Playstation name when it comes to mobile phones and I can sort of see why. If it uses the Android operating system, its game library may simply consist of what's available in the Android store rather than dedicated games for the format.

And that's also a major distinction between the "Zeus" and the actual PSP2 then. The Zeus and PSP2 are definitely separate systems, from what is gathered here, so the phone itself is therefore unrelated. Having a trackpad at the back seems interesting. It might just work. And credits to Sony for the dual analogue sticks at last. I'm sure they'll stick around in the final model design. Now I just want to know whether or not it uses actual disked games or whether PSP2 users will be trawling PSN again buying games digitally.

Looks like they dug up some new info.

We've heard a lot of rumors regarding the PSP 2 but it has been limited largely to isolated reports regarding specific features; today, however, we've received a comprehensive rundown of the device's features from someone with direct hands-on experience with the forthcoming handheld.

According to our source, current iterations of the PSP 2 feature dual analog sliders that are comparable to those found on the existing PSP but are unique in that they have concave indentations rather than convex. It maintains the slider design of the PSPgo, but increases the overall size to accommodate the new features and a slightly larger touch-enabled display.

As would be expected, the PSP 2, like the PSPgo, lacks a UMD drive and will run downloadable or expandable memory-based games. The device also incorporates both front- and rear-facing cameras, presumably for pictures, video recording and communication, and augmented reality-based games.

Notably, the frequently rumored rear-mounted touch panel is real and features a smooth glass-like surface, which our source says can be used for a variety of input functions such as analog thumbstick-type controls, taps, swipes and other gesture commands like a swipe to reload motion.

Our source also confirmed the recent batch of leaked images from VG247, which detail the state of current development units.

As far as graphics are concerned, the PSP 2 is a beast, packing enough processing hardware to produce graphics comparable to early PlayStation 3 titles. The processor, we're told, is just over half as powerful as the PS3, though the specific framework of the cores and the clock speed was not revealed.

While the device isn't as powerful as the PlayStation 3, its components should allow it to sufficiently play games of comparable graphical quality due to the fact that it is rendering to a smaller, lower-resolution display than a full 1080p HDTV.

All things considered, it seems that Sony aims to allow developers to port or custom-tailor PlayStation 3 titles for use on the handheld, potentially to create a ubiquitous gameplay experience that could sync seamlessly between the console and the handheld. In other words, players could potentially start games on their PlayStation 3 and continue them on-the-go with the PSP 2.

Despite all we've learned, several key questions remain – namely how much it will cost and when we may see it publicly unveiled. Naturally, a device as powerful and full-featured as this would fetch a pretty penny, perhaps as much as the PS3 itself, and we wouldn't be surprised to see its official debut at E3 2011.

Nikkei has some preliminary details on Sony's next generation PlayStation Portable system.

According to the paper, the new system will have 3G support. In Japan, the 3G service will be provided by NTT DoCoMo.

Using the 3G connection, gamers will be able to play online games and download software and movies. The service will not allow for phone calls.

The system will also have standard wireless LAN, of course. However, the 3G support will allow players to connect online wherever DoCoMo has wireless service. DoCoMo is Japan's largest mobile carrier.

Separate from the wireless functionality, the paper reports that the new PSP will make use of an OLED touch screen which will be larger than normal. Regarding the system's internals, the paper reports that Sony has developed a new processor for handling high resolution visuals.

Pricing on the next generation PSP is currently TBA, according to the paper. The paper does not mention possible subscription fees associated with the 3G service, or the possibility of a Wi-Fi only model.

The paper also makes brief mention of the device that many are calling "Playstation Phone," a smart phone that includes game features. This will have button-based controls, the paper reports, making games control easier. The device will use Google's Android operating system and will allow users to access non-game software like video and scheduling software.

Sony is expected to take the veil off the new PSP system at a press conference on the 27th. The PlayStation cell phone device is expected to be unveiled next month.

If that truly is the final prototype design, I suppose it looks okay enough, bar the fact that I get the PSPGo vibe from it and Sony should take note of how unsuccessful that attempt was. But the big turn-off for me is the talk of downloadable-only content. Call me old-fashioned, but I prefer physically buying a game and physically having it in your hand rather than going to an online store and just downloading it on. It's just iPhone territory that is. I'm sorry, but the PSP 2 seems too much like a phone but without the phone qualities. There is already the Sony Ericsson Xperia Play phone. Why should the PSP 2 be so similar to it?

the sunken-in look of the buttons and analog sticks - blech. not aesthetically pleasing, nor does it look ergonomic.

I don't like that they modeled it after the Go system, I didn't like that way. And I don't like the sliding feature of it either, looks to easy to accidentally break or that it will wear down the hinges/whatnot and then break.

And it looks like you'll have to download your games again to play. :(

they could sink the rest of the plate down barring the edges to match the level of the buttons. I believe the DS lite did that. I think that pic is just a 3d mock-up of what the grainy images were, so I have a small amount of hope that the design isn't final.

For those of you who are planning to buy the PSP2 handheld console from Sony this year, you’ll be pleased to hear that another source within the industry has publicly stated that the system is as powerful as a PS3.

If you had read the report last month which suggested that the upcoming handheld would be able to run Uncharted 3, you were probably thinking at the time that it would be impossible.

But now, Codemasters boss Rod Cousens has backed up claims of the PSP2′s power, with the following statement:

“In portable areas you’re going to have statements, which already out in the press, saying PlayStation Portable 2 is as powerful as the PlayStation 3 – which is true.”

If Cousens is to be believed, then we can’t wait to see what Sony announce this week at their special conference in Japan on Thursday – Just imagine for a second guys, a PS3 sitting in the palm of your hands could be a reality before the end of the year.

psp2-price.jpg

However, as we all know too well, the PSP2 is unlikely to come in at an affordable price point. If the system can indeed manage to churn out games of PS3 quality, then Sony are obviously going to command a very high price for it – so don’t be surprised if the PSP 2 ends up more expensive than the current price for a PS3 console – $299.99 at least.

What are your thoughts on the price for the PSP2? What price do you think Sony will announce for it?
