Movies that everyone likes... except for you

You know those movies that everyone seems to love and will not stop talking about? However, you watch that movie and do not particularly care for it? Which movies have you had this experience with?

Mine:

Step Brothers: Sorry, I just couldn't watch it. I know it's supposed to be comedy but I just could not stand watching two grown men act like little children. I found the movie to be very annoying. All my friends seem to love it though.

Month Python and the Holy Grail. Again sorry, but I just do not get it. I don't see the humor at all. When my friends want to watch this, I sit there and wish it would end.

300. I was honestly bored. I may have even fallen asleep at one point.

Superbad-I tried to watch it and it just wasn't funny to me. For that matter, any of the movies made by that same group of people. They're appeal is just beyond me.

Avatar- Bored to tears. I really don't see why so many people liked it. I mean, sure it was 3D, but for a movie to be good it has to have a decent story and good acting. I don't think it did.

And the three movies you said earlier Rydia...completely agree...Monty Python was boring...300 was dull and overdone..and Step Brothers was just sick.

I guess I'll start with Harry Potter (all of them!). I can see the appeal of the fantasy elements present, but the movie simply displays a stretched out cliche that I personally got tired of. Yeah... what started out as personal, is now a global struggle of good and evil. Blah... blah... BLEKKHH...

Next up is 300: an amalgamation of oiled and buffed up guys in a hack n slash flick that displays a rather crude version of the Battle of Thermopylae. Plus, I know it's probably been done for artistic purposes but I personally didn't like the Persians being depicted as hell-spawn weirdos. If it happened the other way around, and a group of Iranian filmmakers decided to depict Alexander the Great as an androgynous tyrant with a zombie army, I'm sure a lot of Western viewers would immediately take that as a sign that that's what everybody in that region thought of Western civilization. And for everyone's information, Alexander did seek to deify himself. He adopted the Persian act of proskynesis, which involves one bowing to a person of a higher social class or rank; and according to Plutarch (whom I admire greatly), he actually did think of himself as the son of Zeus-Ammon. But, of course, I digress.

Mr. and Mrs. Smith... I hated that overrated movie whose purpose was to simply showcase Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie (whom I regard as overrated) together.

And there is Twilight (and its sequels). Let me just say that I felt a noticeable surge of estrogen in my body when I was forced to watch this glittering movie. I even thought I started lactating when I accidentally spilled coke on shirt. It made me hate contemporary vampires and werewolves for good, to say the least.

Of course, there are other movies out there. But right now, I only have the energy for the aforementioned flicks.

Well said. This also happens all the time with "barbarians" in period films about the Romans etc., and every time it does it makes me want to throw something in honor of my barbarian ancestors. My new favorite commercial is the Capital One one where the barbarians go after the Roman actors on the studio backlot, I'm tired of seeing one historical civilization being glamorized and favored over another incessantly over and over again. Most films are only just in recent years starting to even break the surface of changing their tune about that, and most historical films are only released in a limited number of theaters as it is. Never in my region of the world, of course

Whenever some celebrity or celebrity couple does something that makes the news (or at least the entertainment news), and then a movie happens to come out with them in it shortly afterward and get plugged the crap out of, I absolutely turn my nose up at it and refuse to watch it ever, even ten years down the road when it's not popular anymore. This happens like every five seconds with Jennifer Aniston, for one example, and not only is she a shit actress but nothing she has ever been in has even been remotely appealing to me. So I see absolutely no reason to see those types of movies, even though everyone else seems to go nuts over them.

I'll admit I am really pretty fussy about movies in general, so I can't really say there are any specific ones in particular that stand out (except maybe Pocahontas 2010 aka Avatar); for me it's more like particular types of movies just do not attract me. Probably the biggest examples are "feel-good" life lesson dramas (which actually "The Notebook" is one that was completely blown out of proportion, it wasn't that heart-tugging at all, and the only amusement I got out of it was that a guy at Blockbuster I worked with looked EXACTLY like Ryan Gosling and we used to tease customers that it really was him XD); American Pie-type movies that showcase desperate guys who go crazy over anything without a penis; horror movies, since I just don't like them; and "based-on-a-true-story" films about people struggling to achieve their goals, which while it is nice to see people succeed with things, those types of movies often end with horrendous anti-climaxes because the directors don't cut them off at the right moments. Oh, and romantic comedies, since the jokes are rarely funny and the actors chosen are usually not that great as of late; other than Sandra Bullock and Reese Witherspoon, there aren't really very many people I can think of who I care for in those

But yeah, wow--I guess I don't really like very many movies, do I? XD

The hangover. I didn't get it.. it was simply not funny to me, I really didn't get it. The best actor out of all of them in that movie was Justin Bartha and he's barely even in it (spoiler). And Zach Galifianakis -the fat guy with the beard that everyone thinks is so hilarious these days- I just didn't see it... nothing really made me laugh in that movie, at all.

I also agree on the step brothers that movie was waay too obnoxious for me.

(PS. Gamingway, I think it would be more suitable to call Avatar Pocahontas 2154, because that's when the movie actually takes place.. Pocahontas was a sweet movie too though so.. whatever.)

OMG I can't believe I forgot that! But yes, the hangover more annoyed than entertained me. Also, I agree with Superbad, another movie I did not get.

I also did not care for the American Pie series. I was probably the only person in my high school that did not care for the movies, but four boys trying to lose their virginity just isn't my kind of movie. And I was a little upset at the apart where they filmed a girl undressing without her permission. I honestly found it very creepy.

And Napolean Dynamite. It wasn't a bad movie but people would not stop fucking quoting it!

Can I say The South Park Movie?

Honestly, I just mean South Park. It's not funny at all to me. It makes no sense. I watch it and feel like like I've had a frontal lobotomy. The voices are awful, the drawing is awful, the jokes are awful, and it's just all awful.

I fail to see the appeal at all.

Wow, a lot of the previously mentioned movies (300, Napoleon Dynamite, Avatar, Step Brothers) I haven't seen. Well, except for the latter because the ex saw it, thought it HILARIOUS and then wanted to watch it together. Didn't care for it.

Twilight movies are a given.

The Godfather Trillogy, Best films ever made? my butt they are, they are slow, long and non eventful, i dont see why they are so highly regarded, the only part of the trillogy i kinda liked was robert de niro playing the young don, back when he had no money and was just a noble man trying to support his family, but its mostly because im a de niro fan anyway. But, nah overrated gash.

I was never able to get into the Scary Movie series either. I just didn't find them funny at all. I remember seeing the first one in the theater with friends and they're all laughing like a pack of hyenas and I'm just sitting there wishing it would end.

300 was awful too. I thought it was extremely dull and the acting and dialogue were awful.

I wasn't really big on American Pie either. I watched it once and wasn't all that impressed. I didn't bother to watch any of the sequels.

Angels in the Outfield. Ok, it's an older movie but I remember when it was super popular particularly among families that have their kids in sports. But does anyone else find it odd, that according to this movie, God rigged a baseball game for a little boy? Was there seriously nothing more important in the world? (Hunger, war, ect) Even when I was little I thought the concept was strange. And the team pretty much cheated. What a great message to send kids!

The Breakfast Club: I liked it when I was in high school. But now watching it, it's kind of stupid. They could have done without some of the silliness. (Getting high, bender falling through the ceiling)

Avatar. The hype around this movie was ridiculous and to be fair, it was supposed to me amazing if you watched it in 3D. But best movie ever made? Give me a break. Cameron spent years on the script and essentially wrote Dancing with Wolves mixed with Pocohontas. Graphics don't make a good film. Or a good game apparently.

I remember this too--and now that you put it that way, it does sound kind of odd I think the Sandlot had a similar following too, though I never saw the movie and I don't think it was about the same thing

Another one I thought of is the Highlander series Although it sounds from the premise like it ought to be a really fascinating, wonderful story, it's always set up with this mundane formula of brutes hacking at each other, the hero finds some random chick to sleep with, and the bad guy gets beheaded at the end >_> It's way too predictable and there's a disappointing lack of depth to it. And on top of that, Chris Lambert just does not do it for me, he's not physically appealing at all and when he's got the long hairstyle, I don't know if it's a wig or what but it looks so fake it's ridiculous.

Movies others liked that I didn't.....Mr and Ms Smith....I don't see why people liked that movie but I guess it's because people find the stars attractive.

Stars have followers and some of them will watch whatever that star is in regardless of the quality of the show/movie.
Not a fan of twilight either.I understand the angst teenagers have and their tendency to fall in love with those stars but I don't feel that way about them.
Plus much better horror has been written than what is in those movies.

The Expendables.

I don't know if it was just the mood I was in that night when I watched it, but I was falling asleep.

Everyone I know is all like, 'The Expendables is so good, you must see it!'

I'm like 'Yeah-No'. >.<

Didn't see what was so great about it.

Yeah I love the actors. They're all great to watch in other movies. But for this one...meh.

I may give it another go and see how I feel, but for the time being, it's one of those movies that I hate and everyone else seems to love. XD

Finding Nemo. I didn't hate the movie, I just didn't enjoy it as much as most people did. It was good the first time I saw it, but I can't sit through another viewing with out getting bored. I also found it annoying when people kept constantly quoting it. Especially when they would talk whale <.<

Avatar is the only well known movie that it seemed a lot of people love and I just couldn't get into it. I mean the special effects were fantastic but besides that I got bored with a lot of the movie. I even fell asleep at one point.

Closer to the end the movie started to get a little better, but then for me it was just way to drawn out and I found myself getting bored again. Everything in the movie was so predictable and it just wasn't one of those that had me at the edge of my seat I was actually getting bored.

I'd like to say "Avatar", but it seems that everyone else here doesn't like it so it can't be a movie that everyone likes and I dislike anymo-

What the hell. Avatar. C'mon, if you're going to do a cliche plot set ahead of gloriously-advanced-for-its-time graphics, at least do what George Lucas did and mix'n'match your plot devices. Don't hit "copy/paste" on a certain Kevin Costner movie.

And yes, I did mention Star Wars there. Love it (I DO!) or not, its plot was a colossal pileup of cliche plot devices. Lucas just had the knowledge of how to blend them all together in a story that was still fun.



The Twilight movies. Yawn. I know I'm miles outside Stephenie Meyer's target audience, but I still have friends who drool over boys that either glitter, or are six-seven years younger than they are. I have to deal with the immediate fan-effects here.


The Hangover. I get...WHY people like it, but by and large this movie was just not my type of humor. The only part of it I truly laughed hard at was the scene with Mike Tyson and "In the Air Tonight".


Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. I've been around a couple Transformers fansites, and it's somewhat mind-boggling to me how many people out there absolutely LOVE this movie. To be fair, they're focusing entirely on the fights and ignoring any/all dialogue that occurs between the human characters; and those parts of the movie certainly are good. It's just that I see someone squealing "Oh god, that movie was AMAZING", and I have to think "Seriously? Aside from the special effects advances and the Forest Battle, that thing sucked.


House of 1000 Corpses/Devil's Rejects. I see...so many reviews...calling these two "The greatest horror movies of the decade" or "The greatest tribute to horror of all time". NO. NO NO NO NO NO. These movies are nothing more than an excuse for violence and profanity that is so senseless it makes Freddy and Jason sequels look like the works of Stanley Kubrick. The plot essentially boils down to nothing more than "inbred killers murder people with jerky camera angles and distorted Rob Zombie music while Sheri Moon looks for another convenient excuse to act like a stripper". GREATEST. TRIBUTE. MY. ASS.

My picks aren't uncommon with most of the posts above me. Regardless:

300: God damn this movie. I hate everything about it. The visual style, the script, the acting, the abhorrently awful slow motion sequences, the source material, the source material's author, the director, the soundtrack thewklatgjkfgksjdgfsk

I think I've made my point.

Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull: *facepalms* They made an entire movie just to introduce the new "indiana Jones" and that would be Indiana Jones jr played by Shia LeBouefourhgdlskhglsdkfhg. It's just sad seeing this movie existing and selling. The brilliant practical effects are gone, the badassery of Indiana Jones owning Nazis and the like, downplayed by an unwelcome character, the script is bland and doesn't meet Indiana Jones standards. It's everything that's wrong with the film industry; rehashing a franchise without artistic integrity.

Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children: I'm not a fan of the FFVII compilation in general, they should have left well alone if you ask me. Only because they are terrible at writing these sequels and prequels. Advent Children is plain stupid, from beginning to end. And it's not like Final Fantasy VII is the smartest game ever made, it was a part of a franchise that was considered simplistic and was made during the 32 bit era. But they couldn't even write a half decent script for a movie sequel at the least? Writing for movies is much easier than writing for games, and they failed at it, horribly.
