I second Big Casino's post.
SPOILERS AHEAD.
I don't really know how long I took. Probably about 20-30 hours or so. My normal gaming speed appears to be fairly fast, I suppose, even on Normal Mode. The developers previously mentioned that Normal Mode is pretty much Hard Mode in ME2. I agree. Combat was slightly more challenging. I appreciate the new controls too. Being able to roll about is damn useful. It also helps that I do not have to duck behind cover before being able to climb over it. That helped sped things up a lot.
The ending was totally disappointing. Totally. As a matter of fact, what I was hoping to see was something along the lines of Chrono Trigger, where there were many more endings. Maybe some that would be humorous? I don't mind having an ending where I see all the developers huddled in some secret location. Well, I realize that's unrealistic, considering the quality of this game. Still.
Sigh. Gameplay and plot progression was good. But the ending was shit. In both ME1 and ME2 for me, almost everything was good - excepting some minor stuff like the planetary scanning in ME2. Hell, their endings were fine. ME3 totally ruined that.
I'm hoping there would be some kind of DLC to offer more endings and stuff. But who knows. Developers may end up being more interested in offering more Multiplayer characters and maps and stuff. Sigh.

Now, on to story. I started the game with really huge expectations. For the most part, the game didn't disappoint. I liked that certain paths you choose can lead to really different outcomes. For instance, when disseminating the genophage cure, there are the Paragon path and the Renegade path. In the Paragon path, you reveal the Dalatrass' treachery and pretty much allow Mordin to go ahead to fix the STG's failsafe and cure the Krogan.
On the contrary, the Renegade path sees Shepard hiding the truth, and then coming down to kill Mordin. I was really shocked by that outcome, really. In the end, Mordin would fail to reach the console in time to fix the failsafe. The cure would be disseminated, but it wouldn't fix the infertility in Krogans. In fact, it leads on to a much more interesting scene later when the leading Krogan (either Wrex or his brother Wreav) confronts Shepard. I kinda liked that scene since it made up for my sparing him in Mass Effect 1.
Another instance would be the Quarian's war with the Geth. After defeating the Reaper, I decided to try a Renegade dialogue option to speak with the Reaper. In case you're curious, the Paragon option makes peace with the Reaper who's just being an asshole then settles the dispute between Quarians and Geth leading to peace between the two races. BUT. The Renegade option was totally different. On allowing Legion to upload the Reaper upgrade codes, the Quarians continue their bombardment of the Geth fleets. The latter retaliates, and Shepard has no chance to stop them unlike in the Paragon route.
Ultimately, the Quarians were completely wiped out. Their main ship, the Rayya falls and Tali commits suicide. Shepard will either ignore, or if you mouse click the Paragon response, Shepard will try to save Tali, but still fail anyway. After that, the Geth pledges their allegiance, but the Quarians go extinct.
All these events made the game extremely exciting. In fact, I thoroughly enjoyed all these missions to gain the assistance from the various races.
However. The ending was an absolute disappointment. In my first try, I wasn't aware of the War Assets issue. I had only about 2700 in effective military strength. I didn't bother with Multiplayer, so that's probably the main reason here. I ended up going up the Crucible, seeing that asshole of a Catalyst and realizing that Shepard dies no matter what option I choose.
Hell. Later I tried to improve my war assets score. I got about 3000, and got to see the Synthesis ending. Wow. Shepard's still dead. Thanks. Everyone becomes a synthetic though. Almost reminds me of Casshern Sins. Great.
Then I cheated and managed to get over 5000 in war assets. Apparently, that's what you need to have to get the "Perfect Ending". Perfect my ass. Tsk. I was totally pissed off when I got to that point. Virtually everything was the same, except for a last minute of showing implying that Shepard was alive.
