I have thought about this in the past but I haven't seen a poll or discussion on it.
What would you say to a M-rated Final Fantasy main entry game?
Would you like a M-rated Final Fantasy game?
What would you want in it?
What would you not want?

I am personally indifferent about it. I could go either way.

However, I would not want an M-rated game that would contain overt sexuality/nudity, gore or language as some would think.
I'm thinking more along the lines of mature subject matter dealing with intense driven narratives and less melodrama in it's voice actors and script.
Some violence or in combination with intense drama sequences could add to the narrative and create a more believable script.
Again I could go either way as it's not really a necessity as I would want balance in a narrative, unless it's overall tone is very dark.
I am hesitant in some-ways to an M-rated game for the new series as it might bring more negative than positive.
There is really no right or wrong just a lighthearted discussion.

Interesting topic. I'd be for it, depending on the quality of the game. There's nothing more depressing than a shit movie that tries to redeem itself by being incredibly violent and bloody (no offence Universal Soldier: Regeneration). A script that had people panicking and swearing at the sight of a bomb (monster), that would make for a realistic reaction too. I'm pretty sure when I was playing Final Fantasy VIII earlier I witnessed two accounts of the word "Bastard" being used, once in the Tomb of the Unknown King, and another in an underground prison. Though it does feel forced when forms of media use the word "Bastard", like in Dragonball Z Kai when Goku turns Super Saiyan, he says "You ruthless heartless bastard, I will make you suffer" but when I actually watched it, it just seemed they were forcing the word "Bastard" to make it sound mature. My overall point being, if they did have an M-Rated Final Fantasy game, it would need to prove itself worth of the rating by its writing and atmosphere; not just the odd swear word thrown in now and then.

i wouldn't mind as long as its not completely exploited like some comedy filsm that are only rated R because they over use the F bombs.

I could never see a FF cursing too much.
Barret and Cid get away with it because it's 'blurred out' in the text.. and because it's Barrett and Cid :D
But mostly because of the text.

It's basically for the same reason I wouldn't want too much cursing in, let's say, Lord of the Rings. Just doesn't fit.

But blood and whatnot? Hellz yea! They should have been done that, but I suppose they might just want it to be friendly to everybody.

More like it wouldn't turn me off if Final Fantasy was rated M. I see no reason for it. It made since when, say, Tomb Raider went M rated, because that's the only way they could accomplish their goals for the survival-style story and gameplay. The direction FF games are going definitely doesn't warrant the same. If anything I'd say FF could stand to go more the direction of its roots, which would actually make it more innocent, not less. The way the series works, my first reaction would be to worry that SE is trying way too hard to keep Final Fantasy relevant if an M rated entry came out.

All they'd have to do is add blood to the battle scene and it would magically become rated M.

This happened with Elder Scrolls: Oblivion. It came out rated T and then they decided it needed to be M simply because of the blood. Bethesda just said whatever and is now pretty liberal with it. Because why not lol.

The issue with some games is that they are aiming for a more natural feel, getting away from the things that say 'this is not real'. And filleting somebody with a sword without blood or gore doesn't do that any justice.

I would personally find it BAD ASS if characters wore their wounds until they were healed and they faded, or something in that ballpark. They would struggle more to attack, and the enemies would get more faint and scarred as the battle progressed :ohoho:
Good stuff, would really get points for realism especially in the genre.

Obviously I have thought about this before.

My question, why does it matter if they add the blood? I mean I started playing these games at a very young age and really, I would want kids to enjoy them too (if they would release them more frequently.....)

I mean they can show all the physical pain they way they have always... They have done a great job of it and don't see the point of adding blood/cussing everywhere.

unless i get to headbutt lulu's chest and make motorboat sounds while my head is stuffed in it, not really

Over here Final Fantasy VII- VIII- IX are all rated M lol

Wouldn't mind, though it might get a R16 over here.

To be fair the Final Fantasy series do have their dark sides. FFVII alone featured genocide, prostitution, anarchy, manipulation on a large scale, terrorism and unethical experiments. FFVI had similar themes in addition to having one character attempting suicide and the main villain's nihilism. Tactics and FFX both had false religions exerting control over its citizens as well as political manipulation. Even the relatively light hearted FFV had one character getting killed by the main villain as the main getting possessed by the Void.

Isn't that why Gilgamesh reoccurs in multiple games? Would have thought so.

I realise I could be completely making shit up here.

Edit: By the way, also, in XIII, Sazh attempts suicide after finding out about Vanille and his son.

I think if a FF game will be rated M that sections of the game that gave it that rating would have a purpose. This is the problem I have with lots of video games and movies. They use explicit scenes or actions for no other reason than to be 'gross' 'shocking' or 'cool'. If a FF game was going to be more violent in certain aspects I hope it would drive the story or characters that gives the player more immersion and reason to care.

Lets say a new FF game was rated M and we have a male character in a scene where his beloved female friend is held captive. In the scene we see her die a brutal death visually instead of just being stabbed or something. Would this help or hurt the game? I don't feel it's necessary to have any more violence or gory details than needed to propel the story or character development. Same thing if we were fighting a final boss and all his guts come spewing out instead of just seeing the an after battle report. I don't really think it would drive the game any further in a positive direction. But who knows, maybe it could be done right and if used moderately could be a masterpiece.

Even if they do this, I don't see why they would need to make it blood and gory...

Not like Blood and Gore make a great game... there are terrible.. I mean... TERRIBLE games with blood and gore in them....
I think that Final Fantasy already has a very dark story no matters which one you look at.

Think of any FF right now... I am going pick IX, since it seems to be the most "cartoonish" one, from the graphics... very dark story, from beginning to end, with almost every character. Freya's love can't even remember her. Zidane and Vivi? both were created for basically tools in destroying Gaia, a planet they ended up loving. Garnet? Her own mother becomes possessed and even goes as far as to try and kill her. Steiner, blind loyalty to the queen and now he had to change his whole opinion of how he thinks...

I really don't see the point of cussing and blood in a game like Final Fantasy just to have cussing and blood in it....

I'd be ok with an M rated FF has long as there's no sexuality. Keep that away from Final Fantasy
