Alright, so in my opinion; I'd like to call myself an aspiring Jack-Of-All-Trades.

Not only with learning how to write novels and coding calculators, I'm also teaching myself how to read music and draw (the latter of which I've grown quite a bit in for only having started a year ago). Over the years, I've found that I have what someone called a "musical ear"; or the ability to hear beats, trims, instruments, riffs, drops, and rhythm many may overlook. I believe this is, to put it bluntly, total bullshit; I don't find myself all that special ^^;

So, I decided to test it out; and I went to find something I could create music with. I found a great number of programs, but I chose a brand name; FL Studios. I tried it out...

I expected that I would definitely need some musical knowledge, so I was wholly prepared for the inevitable overwhelm I felt when using it. I was never a music guy, I just tend to listen to beats because they help me come up with ideas for other things.

Now, that is my case ^^

I want to hear about you all! If you have any type of musical programs/instruments/anything, what type of instrument was it? How'd you get into it? Are you a prodigy? Tutored?

I wish to know! :gonk:

I have been playing the piano for about 3 years or so. I'm self-learnt. No formal lessons or tutor. In other words, I taught myself to read sheet music and basic music theories. There are people who helped me once in a while, but 90% of what I learnt is from myself.

But I don't 'create' music. I play existing songs that I like, especially Final Fantasy piano collections songs, through reading sheet music.

I actually uploaded a cover for an FF song in youtube long time ago. Note that I don't play by ear. I simply learnt from the sheet music and then memorized it:

I'm probably also going to start learning the violin soon. But this time, I may turn up for formal lessons, because the violin is a much more complicated instrument compared to the straightforward piano.

I really wish I can have such musical ear ability as you mentioned. I thought being able to play by ear and improvise at the same time, is a great gift.

Oh my, that's impressive! :gasp: I had lessons between the ages of 6 and 11, and taught myself from there, but I haven't played properly in a while so I'm nowhere near as good as that! I really need to learn a new piece. I can play To Zanarkand, 1000 Words, Scarlet (from the anime Ceres), Breaking of the Fellowship and Rohan from Lord of the Rings, Your Song by Elton John...and a further few.

I taught myself to play a little of the guitar but found it difficult to get truly involved in it through Uni. I would love to keep on practising soon though. Furthermore, I used to play the violin and tenor sax. I still have both instruments and hope to pick them up again and teach myself further pieces in the future. :)

When it comes to a musical ear...I can usually pick out instruments in a piece, although I may get the specifics wrong (e.g. I may mistake two closely related instruments for one another). Furthermore, I am able to learn songs quickly. I have always been more able to learn something by ear than I have been able to read sheet music, although I am guessing if I read a lot of sheet music, I'll get the hang of it more quickly (I tend to skim it and use it only when necessary, to give the piece I play more depth).

I have tried to compose music in the past, some of which is recorded on my Dad's computer. He has all sorts of complex software. He's passionate about music and composes is daily. He plays his pieces at small concerts occasionally, sometimes alone and sometimes with his band, and runs a music workshop.

Ah, I love music. I really should play the piano more. Might do some today. :ryan:

I wanted to upload more covers, but I didn't have the time. This year, I have lots of time, so when I return to the other house, I will probably upload more piano covers.

Actually, being able to play by ear like you, is really an impressive ability. I'm more like a machine-type player, playing directly by the sheet music. This isn't necessarily good, as there's little creativity in it.

I think I will be really bad at composing music. I have never tried it seriously. It seems to be a challenging thing to do, you know D:

It's great that you can play multiple instruments. You should be happy with your talents!

Yeah music is good for you! Play more if you have the time.

I make a lot of music - I've been apart of many projects. I record almost everything in my basement using a combination of FL Studio and Cubase. I don't use MIDI or synthesizers, if I want a certain instrument or sound I go and find it or find someone to play it! I have some training and was originally going to school for music, not any more though. I tend to play a lot by ear too. FL Studio is easy to use, I'm sure you could get plenty out of it - I know I have! My one suggestion when using computers/software to create music - don't let it get too "mathematically correct", programs are amazing at getting everything on the exact right beat which is great but I feel the music looses a little soul when it's so perfected. Experiment! That's the best part about creating music!!!

Eh, I like to fiddle around in FL Studios in my spare time that I don't waste on the internet. I'm still getting used to everything, and with my shit computer and it's shitty RAM, I can hardly do anything, but I've made some interesting beats that I have yet learned how to convert it into MP3 format. I have to admit, it was after hearing a mash-up one of my friends did that got my curiosity level peeked.

Like you Kenjin, I listen to beats, rhythms, drums, riffs, and everything to get a handle on some musical stuff. I have not learned how to write music as I'm not, as you said it, a Jack-Of-All-Trades. I could probably go out and start a band if I wanted to. I write lyrics, and I have a decent background in Digital Graphical Design, so that could help me make my own CD cover or whatever.

I wouldn't mind learning guitar. I am a big rocker, and along with Guitar, Snare Drums are always a big hit with me. It'll take quite a while to develop good skills for both instruments, but I do so wanna learn. I just want to be able to do covers like everyone else. ^_^

I took piano lessons when I was a kid but I didn't really take them seriously. When I was 14 I started trying to teach myself the guitar, but I never got anywhere with it because I was shit and I could only play Blink 182 songs; because that is what retarded 14 year olds listen to. :wacky: I ended up giving it up for a while.

In my first year out of high school I started trying to seriously learn guitar. I bought my first electric guitar and started taking lessons. Three and a half years later I'm still playing and still having fun with it.

I've also been mucking around with electronic music for the past year or so. I've been using synths, Drum machines, sequencers etc.. I've recently (as in the past month) started using a DAW (Ableton to be specific). I'm still feeling my way around it at the moment.

I'm terrible with musical instruments. At school I was always the kid that would almost choke on the recorder, or would only succeed in blowing through it, resulting in pathetic puffing sounds.

The keyboard was better, but I didn't really have the coordination to play anything fast.

I messed about with Fruity Loops a while ago with a friend, and also tried to use his keyboard to compose music for our joint game project. Like our game project, our music didn't ever take off as we'd hoped. We didn't stick to it though, I suppose. He had musical skill with the keyboard, but I had nothing. I remember I composed a piece of music for our talking chicken character, but looking back now it was quite bad (though to be fair I was aware of that then). :argor:

I'm in a band with my mates and we play gigs locally and sometimes regionally. I'm a self taught guitar player with virtually no understanding of sheet music, but it doesn't hold me or the other members of the band back. We all write, what I consider, good songs :) So in terms of musical knowledge mine is limited, but I don't think its necessary to be a good musician. However, I use cubase to record tracks and that took a bit of time to get used to because I had to familiarise myself with bars and time signatures etc. so I could track properly. I should upload some of my music here at some point. When the tracks are 'complete' :P

I am not too musical... however I can write lyrics/poems and have done backing vocals for two songs of an ex-boyfriend's old band. :) I'd love to get back into singing, it really helped me relax in hard times, & apparently I wasn't too bad at it.

It's nice to see that there quite a number of musicians on the forums! And for those who say they're not exactly musically-talented, never fear. It just takes some practice and dedication, if you're willing to do so anyway.

I never took any formal music lessons except for strictly music theory classes for a few months - I was rather serious about composing at the time. My main instrument is the guitar but I fool around on the keyboard/piano a little bit. I also write music. Actually, if anyone has any spare time, check out 2 tracks I wrote and recorded at my
SoundCloud.

I've recently updated my website showing off some new music I've been working on.

I'm so very very serious about making music for movies, short films or games. If anyone wants to swap ideas/build something together - hit me up!

Yes. Guitar is my primary instrument, though I also play bass and keyboards, and I'm not terribly good with any of those. I've set up a small home studio I use to record everything. There've been various projects but it's hard to actually finish anything.

Learning/reading music can have so many benefits later on in life, and it's always a good trait to have. So stick with it!

I've been playing clarinet for about 8 years or so, with private lessons. I started off very well, but then a few years ago I didn't really try and I sort of just lulled and didn't advance my abilities. Now I'm trying to make up for that, and I generally practice about 1-3 hours a day.

Since playing alto saxophone is similar to the clarinet, I've been playing that for only a few years but I'm almost the same level as clarinet because they are so similar.

I also just started playing soprano saxaphone, and amg it's so weird :gonk: But I'm getting moderately good.

I also just started playing flute, I'm horrible since I just started and it's so weird but I'll get there.

I've been playing oboe for a little while, off and on.

I'm okay at bass, it's the only string instrument I play, and I'm okay, but my fingers hurt so much when I play :sad3:

And I hope to start bassoon and french horn really soon, like, next few months soon.

The reason I play so much is because I love music, and I want to either major or minor in music or music therapy. A friend of mine also has a recording studio thing in his house and I record myself with different instruments so make something. I just ♥ music :lew:

i was in numerous bands while in high school all the way up till about 2008. my first band was a punk band called S.O.L., from there i got another band called sub atomic which was a band with a sound similar to the band everclear. then i went and joined a metal band called replikill.. which didn't last long.. back in 2010 i reunited with a long time friend and we started a project called head space. the sound we both have is similar to seether and smile empty soul.

in s.o.l. and replikill i was a bass player, in sub atomic i was a guitar player, and in head space i do both duties, guitar and bass as well as vocals.

I've worked in a few bands in my life. I tend to help write a lot of the drum/guitar parts, and work with the lead singer to write some of the lyrics.

When I was in a band named The Vinyl Countdown I was the lead guitarist, so I wrote a lot of those parts.

I worked with a band called Genus, drummed for them for the duration of the writing and producing of a demo. Played live with them once or twice.

Then the band I've been working with for the last year or so is Deadman's Hand. I drum with them, and write the drumming and some of the lyrics and guitar parts. We've played a LOT of live shows. Opened up for Disturbed, Motograter, The Black Dhalia Murder and Eyes of the Dead to name a few.

I've had writers block for about 5 years now. I play guitar and have (sort of) a Black Metal band. Just a 1 man band project thats never gone anywhere. I've hit a wall though and can't really create anything that sounds original or doesn't sound too much like certain bands.

All the time for me. I write new stuff pretty much every day, though what I share of my own stuff is EXTREMELY limited in comparison to how much I write.. I make my living through music - both teaching and playing out (though the latter hasn't been very lucrative as of late).

All my stuff is in my sig... I'd love to hear your thoughts on all of it. I post primarily videogame covers and as of right now, there are 3 FF covers on my Youtube for those who are interested.

Thanks for checking it out, man!

I'm writing some more stuff at the moment, actually. This time around I'm going to try and completely reinvent the wheel in terms of my mixing. Doing everything from scratch to see how it turns out.
