Multi-platinum, Grammy-nominated singer and songwriter Leona Lewis has come on board with Square Enix to provide the theme song for FINAL FANTASY XIII. The song is entitled “My Hands,” and is featured on her highly-anticipated second album ECHO (J Records/Syco Music) set for release on November 17th. Leona Lewis took the music world by storm with her 2008 6x platinum debut album Spirit which features her chart topping, biggest selling single of 2008 “Bleeding Love,” and mega-hit “Better In Time.”

“When Square Enix approached Leona about including her song, “My Hands,” in FINAL FANTASY XIII, she was honored to be partnered with such an iconic and groundbreaking video game series,” said Tom Corson, EVP/GM, RCA Music Group. “Leona is a natural fit with the game’s powerful themes and strong female protagonist. We’re delighted to be part of this effort, bringing great musical artistry to FINAL FANTASY XIII which is a riveting and dynamic gaming experience.”

I'm personally glad this song is going to be the theme song for FFXIII. I've been a big fan of Leona since her first audition over three years ago on X Factor and am really pleased such a beautiful song like this is going to grace the game with its presence.

I never heard of Leona Lewis until now. I have no idea what this says about her supposed popularity but she seems okay.

This is the first time SE has actually had an American artist actually create primarily for a FF game. I know that the girl from Sweetbox sung the English version of Koda Kumi's song "Real Emotion" but this song "My hands" is an original, yes?

Interesting...

It sounds alright.

Ummmm well I did not listen to the song but this is a bit of a dissapointment cause I really loved Sayuri Sugawara and I thouht they would keep her song for the eng version too :gasp: So yeah not to pleased at all.

Not quite.....:). Leona Lewis is the most successful winner of the X Factor and she is British.

"My Hands" wasn't created specifically for the game. It is actually from her second album Echo, but SE thought they'd slot it into the game.

I don't like this. I mean, sure, the song sounds okay, but the lyrics drive me up the wall.

I liked Kimi ga Iru Kara just fine. A lot more than this, actually.
If I have to listen to this in the game, I'm going to go insane

Oh, she is from the UK. No wonder~ I was wondering why I never heard of her...

Mystery solved!

I'll be honest then, I am rather disappointed that this song wasn't specifically created for the game but I suppose that should have been blatantly obvious given that one of the lyrics of "My Hands" states "Putting on makeup..." which I doubt Lightning does since she is a soldier/mercenary.

I doubt makeup would be important for her line of work.

Anyways, nice song but it seems a tad out of place for a game of this magnitude. Then again, it is not usual for anime series to pick bizarre songs for their OP and ED.

Maybe I am feeling picky today.

I agree that "My Hands" does not really fit into the game unlike the previous songs. As fantastic as Leona is as a singer (Thalia, you must hear her songs! ;)), and as good as the song is, it seems to be just shoehorned in at the last minute. I wonder why they rejected Sayuri's song. FFX has shown that it's not the end of the world if you keep the original theme song in. FFX-2 had theirs successfully turned into English versions and FFXII's song was just English anyway.

I take it that the song has some lyrical meaning behind it, but I haven't looked at the lyrics yet. The bit about the shower at the beginning seems really out of place in FFXIII. It may symbolise Lightning as a main character.

EDIT: A brief look at the lyrics tells me that it is a woman who gets out of bed to do something. She seems rather lonely, and misses something. That does seem to symbolise Lightning in some way- how she and Serah have lost their family- and how Lightning feels like she has to protect and look after Serah. I think the song helps portray Lightning as a rather strong female.

Yeah, I was hoping for an English version of her song too. At least that may have suited the actual game more. There may be some meaning behind the lyrics that suit FFXIII to a certain degree, but at the end of the day they were never originally intended to fit into FFXIII and that's the way most people will see. Personally, while Leona Lewis is a very good singer, she was definitely the wrong choice for this. They should have had an original song or an English translation. =/

Should Nobuo Uematsu have composed the music, I doubt she'd have been chosen.

Hrm...

I suppose that song could work for Lightning but after hearing and seeing how SE incorporated great songs like Faye Wong's "Eyes on Me" and Koda Kumi's "Real Emotion" and "1000 Words" into their games, its a little disappointing.

I got to admit, "Suteki da ne" was probably one of these best FF songs designed and it was written by a wonderful colleration by Nobuo Uematsu and Kazushige Nojima and was sung by Japanese folk singer Ritsuki.

Bah! I am picking on it, I can tell. Leona Lewis has a beautiful voice, I'll admit that much.

I'm not into a lot of music, so I've never heard of her. She has a nice voice and the song is good (although not really what I'm into), but...

It being a Final Fantasy song just doesn't compute for me. The lyrics don't match to what FFXIII is about (from what we've seen thus far). I am a bit of a japanophile, so I was looking forward to hearing the Japanese song for North America, but I'm not against English songs, but "My Hands", I just don't get the connection :/

I much prefer Japanese music in Final Fantasy games. This song sounded rather disappointing tbh. I just didn't really care for it. If English music (not like UK music but actual english-language music in general) is going to be in ANY FF games, I'd prefer it be something rock, but this just doesn't feel like Final Fantasy music at all to me. The girl has a voice, but I don't like this kind of music and it really does not suit an FF game...=/ I'm pretty disappointed.

Wow SE let's step back a little does that really sound beautiful? I have a headache after listening to it. I'm not going to bash the girl, but I'm sorry it ain't what I'm used to for an FF intro.

That was pretty garbage folks, I don't like to be harsh.. but smoking what again.. SE?

To be fair, FF theme songs can't all sound the same all the time, right? I agree with an earlier post about the song being about Lightning, I'm sure I was discussing the same thing with Damon a few hours ago. I think it's a good song, but I wouldn't really say it's a disaster until the game is played and its storyline revealed, just to see if it fits with the song if anything.

I hate to admit it, but I am pretty dispointed with SE's choice for the theme song. I didn't really think that the song style fit the game, and I kinda liked it when they kept some japanese culture in pieces of the game. But, on a brighter note, we finally have the release date! (My release day dance worked! So there!)

I'm sorry, but as an avid Leona Lewis hater, I really think choosing her for a Final Fantasy game is just an awfully stupid mistake. Like Mandi said, if they're going to choose a song for an FF game which features English language, it should typically be rock.

For example, Otherworld in FFX was a brilliant song that featured excellent English lyrics and fitted the game perfectly. This song in my opinion just seems rather bleh.

Also, the bitch killed Run by Snow Patrol so I can NEVAR forgive her.

Don't forget, they could edit it / remix it so it sounds different for the actual game, that's a possibility.

I'm actually finding this quite ironic, listening to Leona's new album, My Hands was an instant favourite of mine, so I'm quite happy about this - it's an unusual choice, sure, but I'm quite interested to see how it works out.
