Final Fantasy XIII is a long awaited game. I remember reading about it for the first time in 2008, and people have been barking for its release. It sold almost 1.7 million copies in japan in less than a month. And will soon be shared with the rest of the world.

Do you think XIII will overcome VII's master throne after claiming it for almost 12 years with over 10 million units sold? Or do you think VII will still remain the true Fantasy in Final Fantasy?

yes i am a VII supporter dork. Who's anxiously crossing his fingers for the VII remake to PS3 after XIII Agito.

FF XIII doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of achieving that. Unless of course it performs much better in the rest of the world than it did in Japan. I expect it to sell reasonably well, but if the Japanese sales figures are any indication, it's not going to be setting any records.

We never thought of FFVII as the true fantasy...

However, before we start ranting, I do believe that FFVII will be better than FFXIII simply because we do not like what we have seen and read in FFXIII. So, in our conclusion, we don't think that FFXIII will be better, and probably won't sell as well. :mokken:

8 actually sold better than 7 :hmmm: least going by wiki anyway

Tbh considering which of the two games is more overrated, i'd say it hasn't a hope in hell of outselling FF7 :gasp:

Being cynical as ever, I never saw FFVII as being a real masterpiece RPG anyway. It may have been good at the time, but I certainly wouldn't label it as being the truefantasy.

Both FFVII and FFXIII suffer individual problems. FFVII is just overrated in my opinion and FFXIII suffers/suffered from the stigma of hype. Everyone expected greatness from FFXIII and now since we can see its true colours, the hype is disappearing and suddenly we just lose appeal of it because our expectations were probably too much.

FFXIII's sales won't put FFVII's to shame as far as I can see. Japan's sales for FFXIII have slumped after the first week (though it will probably pick up again as always) and with the west's general lack of enthusiasm to JRPGs nowadays, it isn't looking really good. Don't get me wrong. It will still sell moderate well though.

It cannot. Will not. Will NEVER happen.

The highest selling current PS3 game has sold what, 3.5 million copies? And that's a GTA game for Pete's sake. Final Fantasy 13 does not have the kind of steam to tackle all of it's competition let alone the magic 11 million mark set way back with the original PlayStation.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 sold 6 million solely for the PS3 :monster:

On the whole you have to be realistic on the matter, Final Fantasy XIII is at a disadvantage because 110 million PS1's were sold compared to 32 million PS3 consoles. FFVII sold what, 10 million copies, that requires a third of all PS3 owners to buy the game. Not happening.

However. It is multiplatform and I think between the 360 and the PS3 it could sell 7/8 million outside of Japan. I think it'll be close come to think of it. :monster:

I can't say anything about FFXIII since I haven't played it, but as Ryan said, if not enough people own the hardware to play the actual game, the sold number of games won't be as high as compared to FFVII that was available on a more accessible system.

I do have high hopes for FFXIII despite the certain points people bash on, and I did enjoy FFVII quite a bit. I could never really say what my one fave FF game is since I've enjoyed what I've played and beaten, so when I beat FFXIII, I'll most likely lump it in with my fave games in general xD

VIII sold more in it's first week. But VII is the highest selling FF game in history.

Sorry, this game was all hype with no show of actually being awesome. It can't compete with games like GTA or Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, a game that...

After five days of sales, the game had earned revenue figures of $550 million worldwide. Activision also claims that
Modern Warfare 2 had 8 million players online within the first five days, constituting the largest 'army' of players in the world.

and especially the Halo series.

Unless this game turns out to be a game made for Westerns only, it ain't gonna happen... AT ALL.

Nahh it wont outsell VII
i think one of the reasons it sold so well in westen countries is that people didn't care what genre is was as long as it was good people would buy it, now a days if you cant:
1)Shoot people
2)Shoot alians
3)Shoot Whores
4)Kick a Ball
Your game isn't going to sell amazingly well outside of Japan...

Meh, I don't even think Square Enix would expect it to come close to the sales of Modern Warfare 2, apparently it was the biggest launch in entertainment history and has currently raked in around $1 billion. I think in fairness to the first bit though a fair few games sell on hype, the latter game mentioned is a perfect example. Halo was a stupidly hyped game, especially by the likes of IGN who are 360 biased anyway but had very little substance other than online - not enough to make up the score it got.

I think to a certain degree Final Fantasy VII is like that too, people who have never even played a Final Fantasy game will pick FFVII up first simply because it's largely over hyped. I'm not saying it's a bad game, it's not, but over hyped definitely.

It depends on the demand of Final Fantasy XIII outside of Final Fantasy fans. Hype can sell millions regardless of quality.

Wasn't FFXIII going to on the 360 too? Or is it still? I haven't look much into the new FF game. I'm still going to get it though.

FFVII is a classic. As far as FF games go, I feel FFVII will always be the best FF game. So far I haven't liked FFX or XII. The newer games lack something, I dunno what though. I feel like they do though.
XIII will never outsell VII. I don't see it happening. Besides, FF isn't as popular as it once was. That's only because back then most ppl were new to video gaming. I think anyways...

Yea, that's true. Halo 3 was very hyped over which is why it sold the amount it did. I own the game myself, and it's the worse in the series. Also, VII is all hype now but back in 1997 it was just because people wanted it that badly.

But unless this game turns out to be nothing but a game only westerns will love it isn't going to be good for it.

It's hard to say since it hasn't been out here yet but, it's a hard battle to win considering not as many people own/ can afford the PS3/360 and therefore dont have access into buying the game. As I think some have mentioned whereas the PS wasn't as expensive? well at that time. Plus VII does have the best selling record. but there has been some bad reviews floating around about XIII. But I still want the game nonetheless :jess: I dunno it could be a toughie because XIII looks more appealing then VII is and maybe will attract more gamers into buying it. Guess we'll haveta wait :monster:

Yeah I agree, I should have mentioned that in my post actually. :wacky: It probably did sell a hell of a lot back around 1997 but I think the hype nowadays may have sold another million or two to edge the sales that little bit higher :hmmm:

I'll be curious to see the proper western reviews of FFXIII from 1UP and such like, whilst I don't think reviews sell or stop people buying a game too much, FFXIII seems to have very mixed reviews so I think reviews might affect sales more than normal this time round.

I cant see VII as the true fantasy. Its way too over rated IMO and I hope XIII does beat it. But I dont see it happening. VII has had a head start of 12 years to beat it hands down. Who knows, but I really cant see it happening. Not in the next few months anyhoo.

I am positive it will not sell more copies than Final Fantasy VII, that game was ground breaking, it really got everyone into Final Fantasy more effectly than any other FF game before it or after it.

I also am certain I will not enjoy it as much as I enjoy Final Fantasy VII. I don't doubt that it will be a fantastic game, and with great graphics, but FFVII is truly a classic, and will always remain as one of my favourite video games of all time.

A Final Fantasy VII remake would definitely be my favourite video game of all time. xD

I'd just be repeating other people if I gave my opinion on which of the two will sell better, but I think I will prefer 13 to 7, solely based on the fact that I've played through FF7 too many times. I'm getting bored of it now (but somehow I'm not getting bored of 8-10).
A new trailer on the 360, with Leona Lewis singing, has proven to me that I will definitely buy the game, and will probably enjoy it. They've made the battle system interesting enough to enjoy, rather than 12's boring, slowness. Of course, I'd still prefer the battle system of FF7...

Did I just say a load of meaningless crap?
