I can’t wait to see this game remade! Just like millions of others around the planet, FF7 holds a very special place in my heart and has greatly influenced the person I am today!
And with that, I would like to get into a few thoughts and ideas I had regarding topics and concerns I’ve been reading on the internet.

The Battle System!

There is a lot of talk about whether or not the battle system should or will be changed. I have a few thoughts about that.
I would prefer to have the same unchanged battle system! In my opinion, it was and still is the best battle system in the series! But on the other hand, I would like to see it modified a bit to help freshen up the experience that much more. So I came up with this idea!

Have two different battle systems at the same time!
Imagine a battle system where outside of battle you could change it from one system to another.
My idea was to keep the original turn-based/ATB system where it goes to a different screen when encountering an enemy. Then at any time while not in battle switch it over to a system similar to FFXII.
It is very well doable!
You can run right up to the enemy and start fighting in real time controlling only one character (also be able to chose which character you are controlling and have the rest on some type of auto), or you can run right up to the enemy and have it cut to a different screen and fight the traditional way!

Aerith or Aeris?

This to me is an easy fix. Without getting into a fight over which name to use, just have every voice actor in the game say it both ways. When it comes time or beforehand, let the player chose which one they prefer. Problem solved!
Or you could just let the developers pick whichever one they want and just accept it! Just sayin’!

Aerith/Aeris, kill or don’t kill?

Here is an idea I have to get the best of both worlds without breaking the overall continuity of the already existing story.
Kill her the same way at the same time in the story, but then have a way that she can join the team again afterwards to help them finish their quest in saving the world, by somehow getting her to materialize in spirit form. Then have her fade away at the end after defeating Sephiroth, giving the player the feels twice in the same game over the same person! (Yes, I’m aware that is what happened at the end of FFX! That scene made this grown man cry!)
With that, you get to lose her in the same way, but then actually be able to level her up all the way and be able to experience the rest of her limit breaks without needing a gameshark or mods!

Crossdressing Cloud scene, yay or nay?

I say yay! But it would need to be streamlined! Just have him go to the store and dress up. None of this running all over town to get all the parts needed like perfume and a wig! Just go to the clothing store get dressed and have Aerith put some makeup on him!
You could still keep the muscle guys in the gym and be able to challenge them to squatting or whatever, but have it be an optional thing you can do if you’re feeling bored or whatever!
I would also say that about all of the corny/humorous parts of the game that just don’t feel like they would translate well in modern times!

And that is just a few ideas and thoughts I had about the more popular discussions about the remake!

I believe the best option is to just make ATB (which isn't traditional turn-based) OPTIONAL.

Its really stupid in my opinion to fight for "Aeris". Aerith is the correct spelling. has been used consistently since ff7. Most have accepted that as her name. its a minor nostalgia factor.

basically changing the story. which i believe defeats the purpose of her death.

already confirmed it would be in there.

Great idea! Just have both battle systems in the config menu and everyone is happy. Unless they don't like either FF7 or 12's battle system...then they just shouldn't have liked FF7 in the first place lmao.

Aerith or Aeris?

Aeris. It was Aeris in the original game, so that's what it should be here. Everything outside of the original game is meaningless...someone's name doesn't change just on a whim, when there are so many fans who know her as Aeris.

Aerith/Aeris, kill or don’t kill?

Here is an idea I have to get the best of both worlds without breaking the overall continuity of the already existing story.

I think she should just stay dead. Too much of the plot would change otherwise imo. As much as I always wanted her to stay alive to stay in my party, it wouldn't make sense for her to do so by this point, a good...20ish years later.

Crossdressing Cloud scene, yay or nay?

As Razberry said, this is already confirmed to be in the remake. And I can't wait to see how they do it with modern graphics and stuff lmao. And that gay scene...will be amazing too 0_0.

Loved this post...gave me so much to think about ha :).

honestly, i think people need to get real about the remake. I really do believe it will be Aerith, and it will not be an optional. Fandom is way too strong. We still have to be real. Lets keep in mind that this game is alread suggestingits linked to Advent children (in which uses Aerith).

The old seperate screen for battles is dated. I'd like to see this aspect of the game to be brought right up-to-date despite how much I liked the old style. I'm thinking have a mix of ATB with ADB, with an auto-battle function that can be toggled on/off easy. Basically XII's but made better.

Aerith. That is the correct translation and what has been used in pretty much everything FFVII related since.

I was having a drunken conversation with an equally excited friend last weekend about what they should do about the translation in general. We think that maybe they could have an option in the settings menu that allows the player to switch between the new translation and the original as and when the player wishes... though we didn't take the VA into account :wacky:

I think it's best to have her stay dead and unusable. Bringing her back would just cheapen her death and make that part of the game have less of an impact by the end.

You only needed to get the dress and wig originally anyway. Everything else was optional depending what you wanted the Don's choice to be. I'd like to see it all included as it was (dodgy key-hole shenanigans n'all) with maybe more. Apparently a choice of underwear was dummied out (hense why there was only 2 choices and not 3 like the rest of the items)...

I would also say that about all of the corny/humorous parts of the game that just don’t feel like they would translate well in modern times!
Nah man, cornyness is part of FFVII's charm! Looks like they are going for a more dark, realistic tone with this remake so the corniness would be a welcome contrast once in a while!

Bah. Guy or Gus? Gareth or Richard? Reina or Lenna? :wacky: Aerith is fine

See? There is already combating back and forth regarding Aeris or Aerith here! In the original NA release of FFVII her default name was "Aeris", but in all voiced FFVII works, it was pronounced "Aerith".
This is why I came up with the idea I did!

Aerith isn't what the game called her before, so why should they change her name now? Aeris is the obvious choice.
Not when the series is known for making adjustments. One called gilgamesh was fixed to Gulf turtle and gilgameth. But also a eris is obvious only to keep the factor. Remakes have adjusted before. Why is it out of the question for Ff7 remake?

It wouldn't be out of the question, and I can see why SE would do it, but I don't think it needs to be done when fans have already established themselves with her original name. I'll add on top that Aerith sounds ridiculous when said out loud, but that's another debate altogether.

Two different battle systems for one game.... this would take up wayyyyy too much time. Letting people choose the battle system, would basically mean two different types of gameplay.

For me I think they will stay with the ATB system, only more "quick paste ." I'm thinking somewhere along the lines of X-2 and XIII. Now I'm not saying they'll use those, just the battle system will move more quickly.

Again choosing something like this would be too much of a time killer. We know they'll use voice acting, so every line with her name would need to be said and recorded into the game, and both would need to be saved and record. They'll choose Aerith. All the prequels and sequels say Aerith, so that is my guess.

Keep her dead.... changing this part would be terrible. Her sacrifice would mean nothing if they brought her back for a remake.

They already said this was happening. Now if it'll all stay the same.... might be up for debate, but it'll be in there.

For me the real questions come from Genesis, Turks, AVALANCHE, and Angeal.

Will they be adding Genesis and Angeal parts? Will they have the Turks be more good guy-ish, like in the prequels? Will Cissini be in the game? Will they mention the old AVALANCHE group?

These are things I wanna know.

The reason it was changed from Aeris to Aerith in the first place was because Aerith IS the original name intended for the western release. Aeris was just a product of the poor translation job on her name selection screen. So really it should make more sense to have Aerith.

Like I said, it'll be cool to have an option to toggle between new and old translations to make everyone happy. Much like they did with the music of IV on the PSP, either having the new remix versions or the original SNES versions.

Following on what I just said in my above post, maybe they could have both translations but maybe with the old option it'll be sub-titles only (maybe bring back dialoge boxes?) and cuts out the VA?

I know the point of it being a remake is to bring it all up to date but I wouldn't mind seeing little novelty features like this an option. The important bits to focus on being new and fresh is the gameplay and visuals.

For me the real questions come from Genesis, Turks, AVALANCHE, and Angeal.

I don't really see the need for Genesis and Angeal to be a part of this beyond minor references to be found. More on the history of AVALANCHE to be found at Cosmo Canyon would be cool though, and maybe more on the Shinra-Wutai war. I'd like to see Cissini added somewhere even if just a NPC.

Hopefully they'll make Reno cooler than his AC portail. I always thought he was a slick, cool character and then he just kinda got ruined with the film.

That's too big of a mess up to be true, no matter what they may have said. A name isn't something you accidentally put in the game wrong; it's something you make 100% sure is right before sending it out. Especially when they put so much money into the advertising and pushing it out to be the best FF (best game???) ever.

Regardless of a mistake anyways, Aerith is an awful name that sounds like a camp man with a lisp who can't say the name properly.

People think her original name is Aeris? Seriously?!!
Her name is Aerith. It has always been Aerith. The only place and time it has NOT been Aerith is when distribution for the game was expanded beyond the original language environment and they decided to make some changes for american audiences and that was only for the initial title in that universe. I'll admit, I knew her first as Aeris, but I knew full well that it could have been ANYTHING before it was regionalized. Why would people think her name in the original Japanese script would be the WRONG name? Because it sounds awkward? So do the majority of proper names, american, Japanese, or otherwise...
I'm just glad that "regionalized only" is pretty much a thing of the past so I can play games in their native languages.

It wouldn't be out of the question, and I can see why SE would do it, but I don't think it needs to be done when fans have already established themselves with her original name. I'll add on top that Aerith sounds ridiculous when said out loud, but that's another debate altogether.

i can see why they would do it, but only for a split second. The rest will ahve to consider all the times they verbally called her "Aerith".

Aeris is a mistranslation. ANd honestly, i would rather have a more logical reasoning other than "sounds ridiculous to say out loud". They've said it before, plenty of times in many many games. Final Fantasy VII series, Kingdom Hearts series, and of course Dissidia.

THeres a 90% chance they will use Aerith over Aeris. I rather just stick with Aerith for consistency and that is canon. Aeris was a pure mistranslation, and fighting for such is a pointless one.

I assure you its 100% correct. Aerith and Aeris are extremely close in pronunciation. For example: Meoth from Pokemon in japan is translated as Nyasu. Nya being the cat-sound, and "su" can go either way, ending in "S" or "th" sound. Meows or Meowth.

Aerith isn't as ridiculous as you make it out to be. A name is most definitely something you can get wrong, especially in games i've seen been done a million times especially in Final Fantasy games.

plenty of games have called her Aerith "VERBALLY". And there are no memes on ow big of a lisp every character who has addressed Aerith as such. lets not go overboard just to support a not-so-accepted idea.

Aerith is 100% acceptable.

I wouldn't characterize it as a mistranslation. What goes on in regionalizing something for distribution is a bit complicated. In addition to simply translating the script and finding ways to express unique idioms (I wish they'd keep the idioms as is for flavor and edification, but that's just me), there's an amount of "What will sound best to the consumers of this region?" At some point, they decided that Aerith could not stay as is for americans and it became a matter of WHAT to change it to. They evidently decided upon Aeris. Honestly, I'm a little surprised it wasn't Eris considering their penchant for references to mythologies and folklores... At any rate, it wasn't an "Oops! Hope no one caught that!" error as 'mistranslation' implies, it was a calculated and rationalized decision.

Honestly, I'd prefer regionalization only being about translating the on-screen script to a readable one and supplying accurate sub-titles to any spoken dialogue. Which is about the experience I'm getting from XIV so there's at least some big movement in that direction.

It is indeed 100% confirmed as a mistranslation.

Its not like Terra/Tina or ButtZ/Bartz. The "su" kana can easily be mistranslated to "th" or an "s". it has been done plenty and i assure you plenty of times. When kingdom Hearts Birth by Sleep came out, the original fan translation for the enemies were "Unbirth", but with the exact same problem of the kana, it was later revealed as the "Unverse".

Also keep in mind that ALL translations after ff7 with the exclusion of tactics uses Aerith (verbally). If it was a decision based on localization then we should be seeing Aerith in every single game that she is involved in. I know you all want to think that localization never have this mistake, but i assure you they do.

For example:
MegaMan Xtreme uses the name "Vava" for one of the antagonists even though his name was localized to "Vile".

When it comes to localised translations, yes, they did often get things wrong pre-FF VIII. VII was no exception and actually the game itself was rushed towards the end in order for it to come out on time. No 100% making sure of things there!

Which brings me to my next point nicely. There were some bits of the game originally intended to be included in the final release but because of time constraints did not make the final product. You can still find elements of some of these missing bits from where, again because of time, they were not properly removed altogether. I'd like to see some of them restored in the remake. Things like the Aero, Water and Boost materias, the mysterious panties (no prizes for guessing what part of the game that was supposed to be for :wacky: ), the travelling salesman side-quest in Gonganga etc.

i can see why they would do it, but only for a split second. The rest will ahve to consider all the times they verbally called her "Aerith".

Called her Aerith in other games. Those don't come into the original source game that we need to keep at least some sort of similarity to, for the remake.

Aeris is a mistranslation. ANd honestly, i would rather have a more logical reasoning other than "sounds ridiculous to say out loud". They've said it before, plenty of times in many many games. Final Fantasy VII series, Kingdom Hearts series, and of course Dissidia.

Why? Why do we need to not consider how it sounds when said out loud? It's an awful version of the name to hear. Sort of like someone pronouncing the "th" in the name Thomas.

THeres a 90% chance they will use Aerith over Aeris. I rather just stick with Aerith for consistency and that is canon. Aeris was a pure mistranslation, and fighting for such is a pointless one.

They probably will use Aerith. They seem intent on ruining their FF games lately, does our Square.

Gotcha. It's interesting to see the translation for Meowth :lew:. I wonder if he goes, "Nyasu, that's right!", or whatever it translates to :).

Aerith isn't as ridiculous as you make it out to be. A name is most definitely something you can get wrong, especially in games i've seen been done a million times especially in Final Fantasy games.

Yep, they can get names wrong. I didn't say it was ridiculous in general though, it just sounds awful to say aloud when compared to Aeris, which sounds more normal.

plenty of games have called her Aerith "VERBALLY". And there are no memes on ow big of a lisp every character who has addressed Aerith as such. lets not go overboard just to support a not-so-accepted idea.

The lisp thing was obviously a joke :P. I was going underboard if anything!

Aerith is 100% acceptable.

Drop it to 50% and we have ourselves a deal.

I'll first respond to the original post. I think the spelling of AirIth does not matter in the least. It's a phonetic word in my opinion, a little different maybe, but unless it's a super perversion of the original word, then I'm not too bothered.

The question is though, should is the death scene supposed to exist? I think it does, but I think they need to abstract it a little bit and make it a least a little more believable. Instead of the usual big sword.. well, I won't do a spoiler. Lets just say I think they could make it a little more dramatic and visually appealing.

Now let's get to the derailment. What I hope they do is they fill in a lot of plot holes. You have a game like FFVII come out. The game itself was excellent and at the time the best of it's kind and the shaping of many JRPGs to come. My problem is the game itself left a few questions for the average gamer. Though when Crisis Core / Dirge / Advent Children peaked their heads through the door, I completely blinked more times than I like in questions. Not a single gamer could answer those questions at the time. Dirge and Advent were in the future and of course Crisis Core was like a pseudo prequel. You can't dig up the dead, so Zack is done. Though whatever happened with ole Genesis (see end of Dirge).

I completely thought they were geared up for a second installment within the next few years. A remake will do though, since I don't believe they have enough good writing these days to come out with a final installment. That's most of the problems with modern day RPG.
