Maybe Link doesn't need to be a young boy.

The father of one little girl decided he'd change the gender of one of Nintendo's most iconic characters so he hacked The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. While playing the 2003 Gamecube title with his daughter Maya, Mike Hoye had been reading the game's text to her, switching the pronouns to match her gender.

Tiring of that, Hoye went one better and actually wrote scripts that switched all gendered pronouns in the game from male to female.
In the blog post where he explains how he did it, Hoye explains that access to the infamous Dolphin emulator and some programming knowledge are required to pull off the feat. He poignantly lays out his motivation here:

You can pick your character's name, of course—I always stick with Link, being a traditionalist—but all of the dialog insists that Link is a boy, and there's apparently nothing to be done about it.

Well, there wasn't anything to be done about it, certainly not anything easy, but as you might imagine I'm not having my daughter growing up thinking girls don't get to be the hero and rescue their little brothers.

Like The Legend of Zelda, some of gaming's most storied franchises have been locked in with certain lead characters since their inception. As a result, it might be harder to imagine that the you that stares back from the mirror is the hero of, say, a Castlevania game. Nowadays, it's easy to take for granted that lots of games will let you play as any kind of character you want. But stories like Hoye's make clear just how important a seemingly bland feature like customization can be to players from all walks of life.

I think this is so incredible. What a great story. I wish I could do something like this for my sister. Or heck, my little brother even, so he's able to accept that girls rule too idk

That man is awesome. This sort of thing should already be an option in a lot of games like this. I mean, the only female heroes are the likes of Lara Croft, and you know those characters are made to mostly appeal to men. It'd be nice for there to be more appropriate female icons in video games.

I agree with everything here.
It should have that Pokemon option of "Are you a boy or a girl?"
This story is absolutely amazing and this man deserves a "Greatest Dad Ever" award/trophy. It's even more amazing how technologically advanced we are and the things we can do with what we have created. It's stunning and brilliant to say the least.

Agreed. Ones that wear clothes/appropriate armor would be a good start.

seems like so little for so much

but whatever floats your boat?

What about Bayonetta? Oh wait...hairy nakedness may not count.

Lemme think...I think Lightning actually may count as a good role model, even if she is from a bit of a crud game. Wow...something good may have actually come out of FF13 :hmmm: . Shoot me now 0_0

So much for non-programmers, so little to those who don't care. I'm not a programmer nor care.

He may had made it to call attention, professionally maybe. It may help his programming career. I would do that.

The guy clearly stated that his intentions for doing this was so that he can show his daughter that even girls can be a hero and save their brothers. It might seem insignificant to you, but in video games, you very rarely have a female hero, and when you do, they are generally women who "put it out" to appeal to all those teen fanboys who are full of raging hormones.

By putting all that work into doing something so little as merely altering the gender in a game, that man is setting a good example for his daughter. Many people could benefit from little things like this.

At first this sounds like too much for too little to me as well, but then again, I know how it is. Sometimes a little thing like that will get to you and before you know it, you're investing multiple hours into finding a way to make things work like you want them to. Partially it's for the joy of the challenge, partially it's because it's a fun sort of nice thing to do for someone.

At any rate, the man gets major points in my book for not being so busy with adult life that he doesn't take time out of his day to do little awesome things like that. I mean to us it might not seem like a big deal, but to a little girl, how cool is it going to seem that her dad changed the game that way?

MY thoughts exactly. Although I dislike XIII this kind of puts into perspective how rare a character like Lightning actually is. I may just dislike her a bit less now.

Well... I think that there aren't a lot of games that have a female hero, but that is changing a lot this generation and last generation. You just have to look at it as a way also, legend of zelda games were first made in 1987, and link has always been a male, they aren't going to change it after all this time. It would be the same as changing Mario into a girl.

But it wouldn't be the same as changing Mario into a girl. Link is more or less a blank canvas. He has no dialogue, and his personality is limited to the various emotions you see on his face. What does it matter if he is a girl? It's making no difference to the character what so ever other than swapping his gender.

As for Mario, his character has so much more personality, so a gender swap would alter his character quite a lot.

How does his character have more personality? He is the same in link in regards as there is no dialogue in I believe about 95% of his games. And with the emotions it's the same as well. As for other games lacking female characters and if they do it's just for fan service, I will disagree with some of the following examples. NOTE I AM NOT SAYING THERE ARE GAMES MADE NOT MADE JUST FOR FANSERVICE, I full know there is. But here is a few of the not where the girl can still kick some ass. Any old Metroid game, Parasite Eve, Dino Crisis, Resident Evil's post 4. You have Jill in 1, Claire in 2. Jill once again in Nemisis. Those can just be a few examples of where the main lead is a woman and still kicks ass in the game.
