"Just four months after a desperate Domino's (DPZ) tossed its much-mocked pizza recipe out the window and rolled out a spicy new one, the chain reported on Tuesday what CEO J. Patrick Doyle calls a "historic" leap in sales at locations open at least one year.
That gain of 14.3%, Doyle says, ranks as one of the largest quarterly same-store sales jumps ever recorded by a major fast-food chain. Even more impressive, the turnaround is taking place at a time when the $22 billion pizza-delivery business — quashed by the recession and vastly improved frozen-pizza technologies — fell 3%, researcher Technomic estimates.

Domino's was painfully aware of its old pizza recipe's bottom-of-the-barrel reputation. It even ran a self-flogging ad campaign earlier this year in which it let a consumer rant about its former crust tasting like cardboard and its sauce tasting like ketchup.
Domino's instant turnaround is almost without precedent in the fast-food industry, says Christopher Muller, hospitality professor at Orlando's University of Central Florida. "No one in the industry thought it was going to be this successful," Muller says. "This changes the pizza landscape."

Rolling out all-new crust, sauce and cheese, Muller says, "was like the world poker championship. Domino's put everything on the table."
The move was made in the midst of a CEO change, as well. Doyle was named CEO in January, just days after the new recipe began to roll out. He says the recipe was a needed move. "It proves that if you do the right thing, then look people in the eye and tell them the truth about what you've done, they'll respond."
Jeremy White, editor of trade magazine Pizza Today, agrees: "Domino's is really kicking it right now."

But not all is perfect. Domino's stock rose more than 70% over the past year, but it took a hit Tuesday, closing down $2.04 at $14.02, a drop of 12.7%. Some had expected Domino's numbers to be even stronger after the massive amount it spent promoting the new recipe and the discounting it has offered over the past quarter.
Meanwhile, Papa John's, which likes to brag about being the pizza taste leader — and whose domestic same-store sales fell 0.4% in the first quarter — is unimpressed with Domino's gains. "It's not surprising that they drove trial on a new product," says spokesman Chris Sternberg.
But Doyle believes it's much more than trial. "Not only did folks try the pizza — they're coming back," he says.
Doyle concedes, however, this kind of same-store sales results can't continue forever. "If we did this every quarter for seven years, we'd be bigger than U.S gross domestic product."

Kick ass for Domino's! Now I gotta try it again.

Papa John's pizza is shit so they've nothing to brag about. I don't really care for Dominos either and haven't eaten it in years. It's about time they got a new recipe. I'm not holding my breath though as big chain pizza joints tend to have disgusting pizza, imo. I'll just stick to my local pizzeria. :dave:

Yea, lol. Papa Johns sucks. I haven't eaten any Domino's Pizza in a long time so I'll try.

But I still say self cooked Pizzas from the store are the best. They're so high quality.

The hell? Papa Johns is awesome. They're just fuckin' expensive. Little Caesar's used to be my favorite when they had good pizza. Like the stuffed crust. Not this 5 dollar pizza that's been cooked and sitting out all night, then warmed up the next day.

Maybe I'll give Domino's another try, even though their Brooklyn pizza was awesome. But until then, Digiorno stuffed crust! Mmm!

I am not a fan of pizza, unless its homemade, otherwise I dont realy eat it...but Domino's is shit seriously the pizza sauce is like tomato paste and water the crust you could by at any store and cheese in a bag always come in handy!
Adding garlic powder to their crust...so novel! ...And thats what the comertial thet played on my radio station said...
I think the only good pizza is the one you make from scratch.

Papa John's can keep their mouth shut. I think those random peppers they put in the box are mind-control devices, because their pizza tastes like it comes from a gnarly school cafeteria or something >_> I've always liked Domino's except for their tough chewy crusts, so if they changed them I will definitely have to check them out. My current favorite though is a local one they just put in the mall near me, they have a kickass white pizza with huge tufts of ricotta :awesome: The bigger chains should expand to include specialty pizzas too.

I love White Pizza. My local pizzeria makes an amazing white pizza. They also have these gourmet pizzas that are excellent. Garlic shrimp pizza, ftw. :awesome:

I'm gonna be the odd person out and say the new pizza they have is terrible. I much preferred their old pizza :hmmm: Now that they changed I went back to Pizza hut, It tastes much better, and they have that new "Any Size, Any Toppings, $10" deal, which is great. I got a pizza from there yesterday that quite possibly was the best pizza I've had in a loonnnng time. I always get Extra cheese, and it had LOOOOADS of cheese, and it was all melty and stringy and amazing. ^_^

I love Domino's Pizzaaaaaa =D

The crust is... just......

AMAZING :awesome: I love the garlic thing they added to it.

Add it last friday when Cles and Johnny came.

a fine pizza choice :ryan:

i'm glad they did it.

If it's any sort of take-out/delivery; I usually go for Pizza Hutt or Domino's

Beyond that; almost everything I eat in terms of pizza is homemade. Most places never put enough sauce on. I want pizza, not a glorified open-faced grilled cheese sandwich.

Before tw'as like cardboard crust.
as for frozen pizza, bleh, makes me puke.
Cosco pizza is really good and the slices are huge if anyone has had pizza from there.
But ya I agree, love the new Dominoes recipe!!:jon:

I just wanted to make a note...My friend works at Domino's and I was right about the pizza sauce it was tomato paste and water...
The current crust just has a "Garlic oil/paste" type of stuff mixed in to it and the sauce...crap I think they actually changed it to sauce I cant remember exactly what he said about it I was to busy being happy I was right about the old sauce

Thats right. Dominos new pizza is kick ass.

[Mod Edit: Mind throwing a bit more detail in there? Maybe why in particular you liked it or did it make you hallucinate or something crazy?! Post count section =)]

I found these two soggy biscuits on the street in a rainy gutter. They looked more appetizing than the new Domino's pizza recipe. That might just be me, though. I had a bad experience with Pizza last October and now all pizza is extremely unappetizing.

I tried it not too long after it came out. Honestly, I wasn't impressed. I actually liked the old recipe a lot better.

I'm actually a fan of a plain pizza, so the addition of "flavoring" to the crust made it worse I thought. I didn't notice any different with the cheese, pepperoni or sauce, just the added garlicy junk on the crust. It was a few months ago that I tried that pizza, and I haven't had it since. It's bad enough I can't find a decent pizza shop in my area, and Dominos was my preferred choice, but I've had to look for another good pizza shop. Everything around me is New York styled pizza, which I don't like. :mokken:
