Yes, I know there is a remake of the original Disgaea on the DS, but I'm just going to ignore that, considering every other game is on a Playstation console.

So, who else has played these games and been captured by their unique brand of humour and horrendously addictive gameplay? In my opinion, no other SRPG (and most RPGs) don't even hold a candle to the Disgaea series. They're hilarious, and the potential for grinding is unmatched...after all, the levels cap at 9999. Dealing 720k+ of damage is extremely satisfying, as well.

The story could use a little work, but...well, it has Prism Rangers, exploding penguins that say "dood", fourth-wall breaking anime cutscenes, and a main character whose weaknesses are positive thinking and women with sexy bodies. It isn't supposed to be taken seriously. XD

I WILL rage briefly at Disgaea 3, though. £40 worth of DLC makes it more expensive than the game is now...that is a prime example of overkill. That the stuff is already on the disc that you essentially need to pay for the game twice only makes the blow all the more painful...

So...anyone else loving these games?
 
I haven't played any of the Disgaea games yet but I am dying to. >.< Just need to wait for my birthday to come, then I'll hopefully get either Disgaea 2 for PSP or Disgaea 3 for PS3. :hmmm:

Have you played both (I am assuming you have. :P)? If so, which one do you think is more enjoyable? And is there any downloadable content for Disgaea 2, or does that just come with everything? :grin:
 
Yes, I have played the first 2 thus far. Laharl makes for an excellent main character to the first one paired with Etna. I will say the game play is mighty addicting, so be careful not to get TO sucked in.

So you haven't played the third though? :hmmm: I'm leaning towards getting 2 more right now, it'd be really handy having it on the PSP to just play whenever, quick and easy. :awesome:
 
Don't make me back hand you my good man =P. I have awful GrAmARz.

And I have the 3rd one on me, but still trying to beat the 2nd, which will never happen. I heard the third one was poorly written, hence why there was such a decline in folks liking it so it really discourages me to play it thus far. I'll probably take a look at it then give it back to my bud.
 
i'll get around to D3 when i get a ps3 later this year. i've played D1 and D2 and can say D1 has the superior story, and D2 has the better gameplay (and bustier sprites. er)

the PSP version of D2 is amazing because it uses D3's magichange system, which changes the battle dynamic significantly (which is also why you can only obtain it after you beat axel mode, which comes with the PSP version).

Prism Rangers are win. Prinnies are more win, but hell, everything's win in these games.

Honestly I thought D1 was better with the gameplay, because of the way you can do "tests" to get more mana. Mana in D2 is a bit trying sometimes, you basically have to solo a bunch of times and right now, I'm not to sure if I should just stop the main story line (chapter 6) and go into Item world or not because I'm not seeing a good bunch of characters right now.

Also there seemed to be more of a linear way about D1 that made it more pleasing than 2. Like I can play as a warrior but when I want to a make a pupil I can't get anything inherited from the Warrior. I have to reincarnate every time which throws me off a bit. So I have to take the lvl 1 back through, which takes no time at all, but still it's annoying having to relvl the person back up if he's one of your major hitters.

Oh well though..
 
I would say the first one is the best - Adell is OK as a protagonist, but he just doesn't compare to Laharl. The second one feels more polished - especially on PSP, its absolutely awesome - but the first is infinitely funnier, and much better written as well in my opinion. Laharl, Etna and Flonne are just so much better than Adell, Rozalin and Tink...probably because the storyline in the second one is a bit more...serious. Serious doesn't suit Disgaea. Axell can't really compare to Mid-Boss, either. Just the nickname alone makes him better. XD

There are DLC characters for Disgaea 2, two of which are free, although they're all cameos - an older version of Adell's sister, and some characters from other NIS games - and you could get by in the game without them...in fact, if you managed to get them in the main story, you have waaaaay too much time on your hands, because you battle them to obtain them, and they're level 100. So, needless to say, you probably won't get them early enough to make use of them. XD

A friend of mine has Disgaea 3, I played it at his house...I can't say I went much on the story - it seems to be more of a spinoff than a proper continuation, and its not as funny - but its definetely a lot bigger. When I get a copy for myself, I'll just ask him for the DLC. XD

Anyone played Disgaea Infinite yet? Well, its a visual novel, so I suppose you don't play it, but I think it looks fairly interesting. Not many visual novels are dubbed, after all. I plan to import it somewhen, since its unlikely it'll ever come out over here...
 
Disgaea Infinite? Can't say I've heard of it. :hmmm: And okay, I definitely will want Disgae 2 first, it sounds like a real winner. :lew:

Disgaea Infinite is a nice game but also really short. The plot is this. Someone tries to assassinate Laharl and he decides to blame it on the Prinnies and completely take away their salaries. You take control of a Prinny, who gains access to a special watch that can make you go back in time and prevent Laharl from being assassinated and saving your paycheck. You can also posses other characters too and use them to learn what happened as well as make them act very out of character for a bunch of hilarity. Overall if you don't mind visual novels and like Disgaea's story and humor it is well worth it for 20$.
 
Quick question: what is a SRPG? Stupid Role-Playing Game? (BTW thats just a joke, please don't be offended!!!!)

Well, it sounds like some fun. :lew: What system is that for, then? Or is it different...not sure about what this visual novel thing is exactly. >.>
 
SRPG is short for Strategy RPG. Like the main Disgaea games and Final Fantasy Tactics.

The game is for the PSP. Also a visual novel is hard to describe. Basically a story where you can make certain choices in order to progress. If you've played the Ace Attorney series, that's a good way to describe it.
 
The first game continues to be my personal favourite. Story-wise, it is the funniest, with a frivolously memorable and hilarious cast.

Laharl, though irritating sometimes, is certainly one of my favourite protagonists. I love how Flonne acts as a foil to him and it creates really amusing consequences. As for Etna, I can't help but really love her as well, especially as she tries to kill Laharl at the beginning with a whole arsenal of weapons including a cannon. xD

Gordon and his crew - although I didn't expect them at first, they have grown to be hilarious additions to the cast. Gordon being the single, most stereotypical kind of representation of an unlucky hero....and his voice actor was really enjoyable as well. The Prinnies are just iconic. I love them even more than FF's Moogles. xD

And the Prism Rangers.....there's nothing more hilarious than seeing an allusion to a popular, well-known franchise. xD

And gameplay wise, it was fun and amusing - especially using Prinnies as bombs. The Dark Court thing was a really interesting addition as well, especially as you may have to bribe or kill members of the court to have your way. xD Really not something you see very often in a JRPG. :lew:
 
I've also never played any of the disgaea games but i plan on trying to get disgaea 2 this summer along with persona 3 or Tales of Symponia i've seen vids of disgaea games and instantly got intreasted so i hope i can find it
 
^PSP or PS2 version? You may as well start off with Disgaea one because the second while not related to the first does have a few returning characters from the first game so it would be better to play that first. Alsho the first game should be easier to find in both cases anyway.

well the thing about that is i've seen vids of both games and im already quite familar with the disgaea story enough to figure out who is who and who was in the original and who wasnt and i also ownd disgaea DS so im familiar to how the game plays and i seen the 2nd one has a couple characters that i would like to find more about as i play the game (mainy Rozalin) and im planning on getting the ps2 the only game on my list of psp games to get right now is KH:BBS
 
if you're going for the ps2 then get D2, 'cause chances are you won't be able to find D1 or it'll be insanely expensive (it's a collector's item now).
 
I thought Disgaea one was a Greatest Hits item? Unless the print run was a short one, it should still be about $20. I guess it must be a region thing but that's how it is here in the US.
 
If there's a greatest hits version then you can get that for 20- bucks, yeah. I was thinking about the original copies, which run high nowadays. I didn't think D1 had a greatest hits version.
